- Here is some interesting commentary on Joel Gazis-Sax's MIRacles No. 5
- (report from Croatia) from a colleague at the University of Ljubljana in
- Ljubljana, Slovenia.

- > The UN is making no effort, it seems, to
- > distribute food to the people. When the UNPROFOR vehicles pass, the
- > people of Sarajevo call out "Chetnik taxi!"
-
- And UNPROFOR "leader " Gen. L. MacKenzie's nickname is "Duke of
- Chetniks". (Chetniks are Serbian irregulars, but now all Yugoslav Army
- is called Chetniks.)
-
- There were so many cases of UNPROFOR vehicles caught either
- smuggling spies - Serbian officers or ammunition to Yugoslav
- army, that Canadians who were part of the UNPROFOR are hated by
- the inhabitants of Sarajevo. Usually they do not even bother to
- answer when allegations with proof were put by the government of
- Bosnia. Or they gave stupid explanations. When chetnik officer
- Kovacevic was caught with the Colonel ! Gary, they said Chetnik
- tricked the poor UNPROFOR Colonel.
-
- It is interesting how the international media coverage is
- working. They never said a word about this UNPROFOR role in
- Bosnia.
-
- The most logical question is - why they are doing these? Why
- helping one side in the conflict, and that is the side who is
- condemned as the aggressor by whole world? I can find out two
- explanations. They are professional soldiers and there is a
- certain solidarity among soldiers. In Bosnia, they feel much
- closer to the professional soldiers from the Yugoslav People's
- Army then to Bosnian civilians fighting to defend their homes.
- Bosnians are not professionals and I can understand that they
- annoy UNPROFOR. They feel much better with their own kind,
- Yugoslav People's Army. It is a certain professional solidarity
- well known from other professions. The only problem is that it's
- killing people.
-
- They are getting different services (not necessarily money). As
- one of the UNPROFOR soldiers was caught smuggling gasoline, he
- stated that the night before Yugoslav army soldiers invited them
- to the great party, and he was obliged to return them the
- thoughtfulness.
-
- UNPROFOR Headquarters are in Belgrade which is making them even
- more cooperative. So actions are coordinated between UNPROFOR and
- YPA all the time, on all levels.
-
- It is very interesting that we incline to distrust national armed
- forces, but show no doubt in United Nations one. There is a
- certain naivety in it. I hope that the wrongdoing of UNPROFOR
- forces in ex-Yugoslavia can show us that these armed forces
- should be even less trusted as the national one.
-
- I can understand that this writing sounds unbelievable (media
- reporting ?), but I thought it might be interesting.
