- WHITTLE WATCH:
- A glimpse of the battle against Whittle Communications' efforts to reach
- captive audiences through the commercialized, in-school news program, Channel
- One, and other media. (This column appeared in the July 1992 issue of the
- Center for Commercialism's newsletter, "AdVice.")
-
- Legal Action:
- ~ On June 25, a New Jersey judge ruled that Channel One violates the school's
- constitutional guarantee of a "thorough and efficient" education and should be
- discontinued. The State Commissioner of Education has 45 days to accept, alter,
- or adopt the judge's ruling.
-
- ~ On June 4, a California judge denied a request by the State Superintendent of
- Schools, Bill Honig, for a preliminary injunction to ban Channel One in all
- state schools. Instead, the judge scheduled a September trial at which the
- Department of Education will try to show that the program wastes public funds.
-
- Local Action:
- ~ Some Channel One opponents got a painful education on Whittle's lobbying
- force in schools. In Port Angeles, WA, the district superintendent refused
- parents the right to play a video of Channel One at a school board meeting.
- When the parents persisted, a shoving match ensued between school board
- officials and parents. The parent group was claiming that Whittle repeatedly
- violated its contract with the school system by embedding commercials in the
- "feature" segments and promoting sexism in ads.
-
- ~ The Texas chapter of Citizens for Excellence in Education (CEE), a 100,000-
- member non-profit, is organizing a boycott of Pepsi for advertising on Channel
- One. CEE objects to commercials in the classroom, and to the provocative Pepsi
- "Gotta have it" commercials featuring scantily-clad singers.
-
- How much proof do you need?
- ~ A University of Michigan study D sponsored by Whittle himself D indicates
- that students who watch Channel One do not have greater knowledge of current
- events than those who don't. Independently, Michigan State University
- researchers also discovered that Channel One students evaluated advertised
- products more highly, intended to purchase the products more, and had more
- materialistic attitudes.
-
- Corporate Tentacles:
- ~ Whittle's "Special Reports" will air on the Medical News Network designed for
- doctors. Supported by advertising revenues from pharmaceutical companies, the
- program will allow doctors to view and order drug samples at the touch of a
- button.
