  21. Be sure to wait for the release that contains the new Merge 2.2; it is
  22. reported as being much better than the 2.1 version.

  24. DELL SVR4 is definitely the most elegant of the them. There is only one
  25. caveat: get it either with a DELL machine, or configure a machine around
  26. their supported and required devices.
  27.  
  28. The latter condition is not actually that onerous, because the supported
  29. and required devices are actually most sensible (in particular you
  30. *must* have a QIC tape unit, which is very OK).
  31.  
  32. Briefly what you need is:
  33.  
  34. * any [34]86[ds]x CPU (the faster the better of course :->)
  35.  
  36. * at least 8MB of RAM (even if only 6MB are really needed
  37.   for installation and 4MB for operation if you patch the
  38.   /etc/default/boot entry).
  39.  
  40. * at least 200MB of disk if you want to load everything
  41.  
  42. * either an Adaptec 1542 or WD1003 compatible disk controller
  43.   (the Dell DDA and the BusTek 542 are 1542 compatible; almost
  44.   all IDE and ESDI controllers are WD1003 compatible).
  45.  
  46. * a 1/4" tape unit that can read QIC-150 tapes, with either
  47.   a SCSI interface or an Everex/WangTEK compatible QIC-36 (or some
  48.   QIC-02 ones) controller.
  49.  
  50. * Any video card will boot the system, but you need a VGA card, e.g.
  51.   an ET4000 based SVGA or MACH8 based 8514 card if you want to
  52.   run X windows fast (even if X will work slowly with almost any VGA).

  54. One of the cheapest/best value basic setups for running DELL's SVR4 is a
  55. 486/33 AMI BIOS motherboard ($750) with 8MB ($300), an AHA 1542B or
  56. BusTek 542B ($230), a Maxtor 340 ($1000) or a Quantum 400 ($1200), an
  57. Archive 2150s or Wangtek 5150ES ($600).
  58.  
  59. Having a SCSI I/O subsystem based around a 1542B is *very* recommended.
