- I don't know that I "solved it" .. but I know what makes it work right:
- run the login when you su. That is, "su -", and the problem goes away.
- Basically, pwd and emacs are using different things, and one of the
- quirky things about su without the dash is that some things in the
- environment are preserved and others aren't.

- I haven't bothered to chase it down to the exact environment variables
- involved.
