- TW> I have finally received some grant money to up my Mac IIci.
- TW> Now I am struggling with the many options available, and I
-
- Here is a summary of the responses that I have received so
- far:
-
- (1) The Quadra upgrade is (almost) as fast as any of the
- other alternatives, but is original Apple. Plus one gets
- extra goodies such a a better SCSI, video circuitry, and
- onchip FPU.
- (2) No compatability problems and only happy users with
- Daystar Power Caches. Might be upgradable to coming 040
- versions.
- (3) Fusion Data System Tokamac CI can run A/UX only by
- handing control over to the original 030 processor.
- (4) Radius Rocket is also worse than Quadra as far as
- compatability is concerned.
- (5) The Quadra overdrive card goes into the Quadra ROM slot,
- and "bumps" its CPU to 33Mhz.
-
- As far as the Quadra upgrade is concerned, this raises a
- second question for me. I believe that the Quadra upgrade
- will bring a IIci to a Quadra 700. Now I am under the
- impression that the Quadra 700 has only 4 SIMM slots. I
- currently have 32MB memory in my IIci, which I do need (8 x
- 4MB). Does this mean if I get the Quadra upgrade I have to
- either go back to 16 MB (4 x 4MB) or shell out the extra
- money to get 2 additional 16MB SIMMs to bring me to 40MB (2
- x 16 + 2 x 4)?
-
- I sure hope not. This sounds way to foolish to be true.
-
- Also, in case of a third party upgrade board, does the
- presence of the second board disable the original CPU? Or
- could one write programs which actually would use both CPU's
- in parallel? I do realize that this would of course not be
- available for applications, but could one (in theory) make
- use of both CPU's? I have once toyed with the idea of buying
- an IVORY board which allowed just that, and I cannot see any
- reason why it should not be possible with a "normal"
- accellerator board.
-
- Cheers, Thomas.
