- Ummmm... Are you really sure about this? The reason the older 8*24 and
- 8*24GC cards could not do 16 bits/pixel (bpp) is that the RAM/DAC used on
- those cards simply did not have the internal hardware to support it.
- (There's also the matter of ROM support, but that's moot if you don't have
- the hardware capability in the first place.) In order to upgrade these
- cards to do 16 bpp, an Apple service dealer would either have to
- completely replace the card, or unsolder the old RAM/DAC and replace it
- with a new, 16-bpp capable one. It's my understanding that Apple usually
- doesn't do this sort of thing (i.e., unsoldering and replacing individual
- components).

- However, I believe the ROM on these cards is socketed, and could be easily
- replaced. This could get you support for the Apple 16" display since the
- video timing hardware is programmable, but not 16 bpp capability since the
- hardware would still be lacking. (Could you be confusing 16" monitor
- support with 16 bpp?)
