- This is more of the same problem I posted about last week. Only got one
- response then - thanks to Dana - so I've been going pretty blind since then
- but have made some progress. But I'm stuck again.
-
- BTW, this problem came about because of an apparent power surge that hit
- the Mac about two weeks ago. Actually, there were three from what I was
- told (it isn't my Mac).
-
- The SE came up with the sad Mac and an error code which indicated
- that SIMM 2 was bad. I swapped SIMMs 1&2 and the new code indicated SIMM 1
- was bad, so I felt pretty confident that was the problem (or a problem).
- I removed SIMMs 1&2 and replaced them with 256K SIMMs (all four were 1 MB),
- bringing the machine down to 2.5 MB. Now I get a checkerboard pattern on
- the screen AND a happy Mac. This confuses me because in Larry Pina's book,
- he refers to a straight checkerboard pattern as being representative of a
- ROM problem but he doesn't say anything about a happy Mac. In addition, I
- tried pressing down on the ROM chips and they seem to be in as far as they
- can go.
-
- My main questions are:
- 1) Does the checkerboard with happy Mac indicate something else?
- 2) Could one or more of the ROMs be bad? How easy is it to find
- replacements?
- 3) Could the SE be unhappy that the 256K SIMMs are in slots 1&2 instead of
- 3&4? I can check this tonight but if someone knows the technical details,
- I'd appreciate it.
-
- Anything else that anyone can suggest will be greatly appreciated. I've
- been trying to do this repair for a friend who owns the Mac but has no
- money for a quoted $350 logic board repair at a local store, and she certainly
- can't afford a new computer. Thanks VERY much in advance.
