Subject: Re: Stylewriter vs. HP Deskwriter, which one should I buy
To: "mac" <mac@dwaihir>
DeskWriter ... twice as fast, larger capacity ink cartridge (cheaper
per page to use), prints at 300 dpi so that your documents paginate
the same as with LaserWriter. New versions are AppleTalk-ready and
upgradeable to color DeskWriter C.
Stylewriter ... *very* small and portable, 360 dpi resolution, but
slow and expensive to use.
Both work with TrueType and ATM outline fonts. HP can also use
AGFA fonts.
I'm very happy with my DeskWriter ...

G'day,
I have a deskwriter C that has been heavily used and abused (lots of moving around ) for
the last 6 months or so. Haven't had any problems. The major difference between the Deskwriter and the Stylewriter is speed; even with new drivers the Stylewriter is sssllow... ...
I don't agree that the Stylewriter has better output either. But, if youwill only be printing text, it doesn't make any difference, they're both more than adequate. Due to this the difference will be price versus speed, which is more important?
Finally, the Deskwriter is upgradeable, and therefore more flexible. You decide, but my vote goes to HP every time.
Cheers,
Wesley

I just bought a StyleWriter, mainly because of the the great price difference between it and the HP. At CompUSA in Atlanta, the price for a StyleWriter was
$289, and the DeskWriter was nearly $450! The SW is really not that slow for a personal desktop printer, the backgrounding works wonderfully, it comes with the complete LasweWriter font set in TrueType format, and 360 DPI does look better
to my eyes than the DeskWriter 300 DPI. I am hard to satisfy, and I love it!

I have a StyleWriter at home, and we use a DeskJet at work. I've never tried
a DeskWriter, but my understanding is that there's no difference in speed or
output from the DeskJet.
The StyleWriter does have better output than the DeskJet. I am continually
impressed by the quality of StyleWriter output, which rivals that of a laser
printer. Note that for truly amazing output, you have to use good, thick
paper. On thin paper, both the StyleWriter and the DeskJet tend to soak the
paper a bit, and it doesn't look so great.
The StyleWriter is, however, quite slow. It is fast enough for a normal user,
unless you plan to print very large documents, and it prints in the background
with no appreciably slowing of my computer. The DeskWriter is considerably
faster, though.
The DeskWriter also has waterproof-ink; the StyleWriter does not. This has not
been a serious problem for me, but I have to be a little careful with my
StyleWriter documents, and occasionally I have smeared a document which would
not have smeared if it had been printed on a DeskWriter.
The DeskJet has never broken down-- my StyleWriter has broken once. I don't
know if this means anything-- I have a very small sample here.
I chose the StyleWriter for home because the print quality was important to me,
I wanted to have its AMAZINGLY small footprint, and I couldn't afford
LaserWriter. Since buying it I have also come to appreciate the straight paper
path which allows me to print on just about anything. I chose the DeskJet for
work because I wanted a decent printer which worked at a decent speed and which
was expandable (we have an Epson emulator installed at the moment). They are
both nice printers. I think I would buy another StyleWriter if I had to make
the choice again, though the DeskWriter C is very tempting. So where's the
StyleWriter C, Apple?
