- Howdy. Here's the newest version of AliasZoo (ver 1.4.1). This version
- fixes a couple of annoying bugs (which are described fully in its accompanying

- color QuickDraw. I'd appreciate it if you could check it out to make sure it
- has arrived safetly and then post it in the Util section. Thanks!!! :)
-
- ps. Could you also delete the two old version of AliasZoo that are still

- For those of you who downloaded version 3.0, release 3.01 fixes a bug that
- occured on 68000 machines (Mac Plus, Mac SE, etc.). This bug resulted in an
- "Unimplemented Trap" error before the applciation brought up the main window.
- This problem has been resolved.
-
- For those who doanloaded the previous FontClerk 2.2, I think you will find
- version 3.01 much improved with several new features. New features include:
-
- -Conversion of installed Macintosh TrueType to Windows TrueType
- -Runs on all Macintosh systems running System 6.05 or later
- -New "Sample Point Sizes" report type
- -New editable sample text
- -View sample text in any point size or style
- -Windows are modeless
- -Window positions are saved from session to session
- -New preference dialog for customizing the application and reports
- -Works even if your Macintosh does not have outline fonts (TrueType)
-
- For those not familiar with Font Clerk 3.0, it is an application for managing
- installed fonts. It allows you to view sample text in any font or style, and
- produce several reports types that make managing fonts a bit easier. You can
- also get detailed information about any font, such as the ascent, descent, and
- leading values for each font, and in any point size. It also allows you to
- print a report showing the keystrokes required for all charcaters, allowing
- you
- to locate the hard-to-get-at graphic characters hidden in some fonts. The full
- 0-255 Macintosh ASCII character set it supported.
-
- Font Clerk 3.0 is 32-bit clean and will run on any monitor from the 9" on up.
- You must be running System 6.05 or later.
-
- Several incompatibility bugs from version 2.2 and 3.0 were fixed in 3.01.
-
- Font Clerk 3.0 is Shareware. Due to the recent hard financial times, I have
- kept the fee small in hopes that all can afford it. The Shareware fee for Font
- Clerk 3.0 is $10. Thanks for all of you who have supported this application by
- sending in your Shareware fees. As usual for those who have registered, there
- is no need to pay the Shareware fee for this version.

-
- I've seen a couple of reports that the MacBooz .zoo file extractor
- doesn't always produce good files. Here's an alternative, that also has
- some limitations but may work better (It's 50K bytes larger, so it
- should do more, yes?). I haven't had an occasion to use either program,
- so I can't say whether either works or not (needless to say, I downloaded
- this from somewhere, but I didn't write it--see the docs).
-
- SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR MacZOO 2.1
-
- 1/7/92
-
- The interface to MacZOO is a command line interface -- sorry, but
- we wanted to modify a minimum amount of the code written by ZOO's
- creator, Rahul Dhesi. After double clicking on the MacZOO icon,
- type in the command line arguments as described in ZOO.MAN. For
- example, if on a UNIX or MS-DOS command line you would type "zoo
- a temp *.c" (which would add all files with names ending in ".c"
- to a ZOO archive called "temp.zoo"), you would enter "a temp *.c"
- in the MacZOO startup window.
-
- Also, MacZOO will not archive and compress anything but text files.
- Executable files on the Mac, for example, are not single files like
- they are on most other systems, and so ZOO would have to be
- extensively modified to handle them.
-
- Thus, MacZOO is intended as a program to handle archives of text
- files which will be transferred among various machines. Since ZOO
- runs on UNIX machines, OS/2 machines, NeXTs, Amigas, Ataris, and
- MS-DOS machines, Macs can now handle ZOO files created by these
- machines and vice versa. Even Apple II's and CP/M machines have
- unZOO programs.
-
- ZOO 2.1 was ported to the Mac by Jim Wolff and Brooke Anderson,
- who assume no responsibility for the results of using MacZOO --
- even if it causes your computer to explode, killing everyone within
- a several block radius.

- Subject: Animating colors on QuickDraw Bitmaps
-
- Time to come out of the shadows of the info-mac list and pose a
- question instead of just reading them.
-
- I'm trying to write a simple program that reads in a bitmap picture
- >From disk, and displays it in a window; then allows the user to move
- slider controls to manipulate the brightness and contrast of the picture.
-
- I've gotten as far as reading and displaying the picture using the
- CopyBits procedure to copy from an off screen bitmap to my window, but now
- I would like to animate the palette to adjust the brightness and contrast.
-
- The problem is that the palette just won't animate (really). I've
- written another test program that draws a square and animates its
- colors, but the bitmap just won't do it.
-
- I've seen other programs like Image 1.44 and Photoshop perform this little
- trick, but can't figure out how they did it. I've also read the Inside Mac
- volumes looking for the answer, but they don't get very explicit.
-
- Obviously I would like to solve this problem with as little black magic
- as possible so that I can avoid screwing up my system's environment.
-
- I'm writing this little bit of code with Think C and calling it from
- MacProlog on a IIcx with sys7 etc.
-
- If you can help or know someone or (somewhere) that can help, please
- e-mail and I will summarize and post the code for the list.

-
- This will be happening Wednesday ( July 29 1992 ) in the late afternoon
- ( Australian Eastern Standard Time ).
-
- My apologies for the sudden announcement of this. Concerns addressing

- Consulair and that some of the examples now don't quite jive with

- As for the company, I can tell you that one of the chief developers

-
- Consulair used to be out of Portola Valley in California, but I think

-
- I've called Consulair a number of times and I've been helped quite

-
- I've just finished a largish report, also in Nisus (3.0.6). I proofed it on
- my local DWC (driver 2.0), and was annoyed that the graphics I'd imported
- with thin lines were rather thicker. I went into Nisus' graphics mode and
- edited them all to 1/4 point, being roughly DW hairline weight. Didn't
- proof again, but produced PostScript and sent it to the Digital LN03R
- hanging off our VAX. Nice hairlines. Reading Graeme's note I went back to
- the DWC this afternoon, printed in "Best" mode, and got 1pt lines again!
-
- I must say the DWC I acquired as compensation for having to relinquish an
- ordinary DW is giving rather more niggling problems. Every attempt to print
- these days gives a "Bad Cartridge Connection" error. (And why can't that
- dammned "Please bring HP Print Monitor to the front" dialog do it itself,
- instead of sending me mousing to the top right?) I can clean the contacts,
- jiggle the cartridge in its carriage, or just press "Continue" to get my
- print job, which looks ok to me. But within minutes, the problem's back.
- The 51608A black cartridge (_not_ refilled) seems to leak rather readily
- too. What happens when the small white sponge at the home position is
- saturated?
-
- Should anyone know Victor Meldrew, that's the way I'm headed!

- Graham,
- Check that you have the latest DW drivers (V3.1 available on Sumex). They have

- Subject: FYI Sharing Printer with Macs and Unix Systems
-
- When I was at the Mactivity conference, I looked for solutions to
- the problem of using one laser printer with both Macs and Unix
- workstations connected via ethernet. Here's what I found:
-
- 1. Use a PostScript HP IIIsi with an HP TCP/IP ethernet card and run
- InterPrint from InterCon on each Mac. This software allows Macs to
- print to Unix printers. I think it is in beta test right now and SLP
- is $195 single user, $895 five user, $1,595 ten user, etc.
-
- 2. Use a PostScript HP IIIsi with an HP TCP/IP ethernet card and run
- software on one of the workstations that provides a print queue for
- the Macs (The queue will show up in the Chooser like any AppleTalk
- printer). I think this can be done with a number of commercial
- AppleTalk products for Unix, but should also be possible using CAP.
- If CAP will work, the cost of this solution would depend on what
- arrangements the users have made for Unix technical support.
-
- This solution could be modified to use any PostScript printer that
- you can connect to a Unix system (i.e. via a serial port, parallel
- port, or ethernet port).
-
- 3. Use a PostScript HP IIIsi with both a TCP/IP card and a LocalTalk
- card. Then connect one of the ethernet connected Macs to the printer
- via LocalTalk and run a new program on that Mac called LaserBridge.
- This program allows up to five LocalTalk printers to be used by
- ethernet connected Macs. It is made by Sonic Systems and the show
- price was $100 (it's only needed on the one Mac). Unlike Liasson
- which is a router and takes quite a performance toll on the Mac
- running it, LaserBridge is just a bridge and apparently uses very
- little CPU. I was assured by the HP rep that both a TCP/IP ethernet
- port and LocalTalk port can be installed and the printer will
- automatically switch between both ports, but I did not see this in
- action.
-
- This solution could be modified to use any PostScript printer that
- has auto-sensing ports (you could connect the workstation to a
- serial port or even a parallel port in some cases instead of
- ethernet).
-
- 4. Use any PostScript printer that has a LocalTalk port and connect
- this to ethernet via a hardware device (box about the same size as a
- modem) called EtherWrite/LPR. This device provides IP to AppleTalk
- conversion and EtherTalk to LocalTalk conversion so both Macs and
- workstations on ethernet can use the same printer without installing
- additional software. This product is still vapourware (I think the
- rep said to expect it sometime in the fourth quarter). I don't know
- what it will cost, but I'd guess somewhere between $500 and $1000.
- EtherWrite/LPR will apparently support up to six LocalTalk printers.
- It is from Compatible Systems.
-
- 5. I think (but did not verify) that a Novell Netware server running
- Netware 386 3.11, Netware Mac 3.01, and Netware NFS will provide
- printing service for Macs, Unix systems, and PCs to any PostScript
- printer. What sort of connections to the printer that would work is
- something I cold only guess at. Netware Mac supports printers on
- LocalTalk (via a Dayna DL2000 card in the server). Netware 386
- supports printers on the parallel port of the server. HP sells an
- ethernet card for the HP IIIsi that works with Netware and supports
- IPX (EtherTalk as well?). Extended Systems sells a card for the HP
- IIIsi that supports IPX and EtherTalk. HP sells another card for the
- IIIsi that supports TCP/IP. Which of these options used with a
- Netware server would provide printer access for Macs, Unix systems,
- (and PCs)? I dunno, but I'll bet one of them will work. Cost of this
- solution depends on the configuration of the server (figure at least
- $5,000 total) but you also get a great file server as well.

-
- If a PowerBook is put to sleep while sharing it's HD, then an attempt to

- Loathe tho I am to controvert the redoubtable Les_Ferch@mtsg.ubc.ca
- who remarked in v10n179, 24 Jul 1992 that
- > Making an ALIAS to LaserWriter does
- > NOT work for SendPS 2.0 and Chooser doesn't like it either.
-
- I have used an LW alias [named " " in the extensions fldr] with CIs, SIs,
- and SE30s for a year now with SendPS, Word, and various graphics apps.
- I believe all the permutations of System 7 with or w/o tuneup have been OK.
- No problems that I am aware of. Once in a while somebody asks why there's
- a blank spot in the hierarchical menu for the Chooser but that's all.
- I meant to mention this config about six months ago when someone in this
- list mentioned a similar setup but had the position of the alias and the
- extension reversed [putting the LW alias at the system level].

- Under System 7 the laserwriter driver is in the Extensions folder. SendPS
- does not know to look there. Just make a copy of the laserwriter driver
- and put it at the root level (same as the finder) of the System folder.
- All will be well.

- Subject: Simple Player
-
- Regarding recent comments about the need to change the creator of a movie
- to TVOD so that Simple Player will recognise it: surely all that's needed
- is that the file BE a movie, ie its TYPE should be MooV. Then you can open
- it from within Simple Player or drag the movie onto the application icon.
- The file's creator is irrelevant (just as TeachText can read a TEXT file
- created by MacWrite, for example).
- Just thought I'd clear that up in case nobody else has bothered to say so

-
- I'd like to thank all of the folks who promptly (I had responses within the
- hour!) answered my question about getting a large PostScript file from my
- Mac to my university's VAX without having Kermit choke.
-
- The answer is... send the file as binary (NOT Macbinary) and tell the
- receiving Kermit to expect a binary file (for example: Kermit-32> SET FILE
- TYPE BINARY). I did this, and, of course, it worked great.
-
- Thanks again to all who responded!

- I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but it
- seems more appropo than any of the other news groups. I have a

- doesn't know how to type. He has asked me for months to get
- for him some Mac touch-typing software. I have heard that there
- is a decent program out there, but have not found it. Does anyone
- know where I can find such a program? Is there some shareware
- around? Can anyone help me out?

- Thanks...
