- entries found in the orst.edu archive. The Dictionary Stack is
- a total of 3,831,477 bytes in .cpt.hqx form; the compressed .cpt
- file is 2,818,629 bytes, and uncompressed it's 6,394,311 bytes ---

- My questions were on FTP syst. 6.0.8, infomac keyword search and electron
- dictionary, Here are the answers:
-
- 1) one electronic dictionary can be FTPed on "OES.ORST.EDU" in
- /pub/almanac/etext. the file pub/data/etext/dict.pu.Z
- A Unix program called "uncompress" is needed to uncompress this file. There
- is a Mac version of this program called MacCompress. The sumex
- archives have a copy. Once uncompressed, the result will be a uuencoded file.
- Another Unix program "uudecode" is needed to decode it. The sumex archives
- have a program called "uutool" that will do this on a Mac. StuffIt also
- comes with uuencode/uudeco
- de translators.
-
- 2) system 6.0.8 can be FTPed by anonymous on
- ftp.apple.com (130.43.2.3) in /dts/mac/sys.soft
-
- 3) For the last question, I quote part of the mail From: Ephraim Vishniac
- <ephraim@Think.COM>
-
- Subject: Searching through IM archives? Use WAIS!
- "If you're on the Internet, the easiest way is to use WAIS. WAIS stands for
- Wide Area Information Servers. It provides a set of user interfaces (for
- Macintosh, X-windows, NeXT, DOS, gnu emacs, and dumb terminals), a
- client-server protocol based on Z39.50,
- and a variety of information servers. There are dozens of WAIS servers on the
- net, including one on cmns-sun.think.com which includes the last few years of
- the Info-Mac."
-
- You can telnet to "quake.think.com" and login by "wais" to begin the search.
-
- WAIS is a nice protocol, For those who like mac-interface, I suggest that you
- FTP by anonymous a program in "think.com", It is in
- /wais/WAIStation-063.sit.hqx. (/wais/bibliography.txt gives a good resume on
- wais doc). I can run WAIStation in a networked MA
- C, but I can NOT run it in home, Perhaps because I have only a 2400 bps modem
- or the communication tools is not installed correctly. I use system 7 on a
- classic II and it is my understanding that the communication protcol is
- included in syst 7.
-
- et voila!
- Thanks for you attention.

- From: RICHARD LIM <RTL%SIVA.BRISTOL.AC.UK@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU>
- Subject: Bad F-lines
-
- Regarding the highly informative advice on "Bad F-line instruction" messages
- and how they can be related to code corruption, I'd just like to say that
- for AGES, I couldn't boot my LC from the System 7 Install 1 disk because it
- would produce...you guessed, "Bad F-line Instruction"! The same thing
- happened when I attempted to boot using the Install disk that came with my
- office's Quadra 700. In both cases, the boot process would bomb just after
- the desktop pattern was drawn, but before entering the Installer.
- So, I thought, I'll boot from the internal hard disk and then try to
- reinstall the System on it by running the Installer from the floppy.
- Everything would go okay until it got to the stage where it ejects Install 2
- and asks for Tidbits. Then the Installer would get totally out of sync
- with itself, because it would suddenly produce an additional dialog box on
- the screen saying "Please insert Install 2" - but refuse to continue with
- either Install 2 or Tidbits disks. The net result was that it had trashed
- enough of the hard disk System to make that unusable, but you were unable
- to continue with the installation procedure. In other words, you were
- completely screwed and had to boot off Disk Tools!
- Am I alone in this, or have other people seen this System 7 Installer bug?
- I might add that the problem occured in exactly the same way when I tried
- using the Quadra startup disks on my LC. I managed to get round the whole
- problem by booting from an external hard disk every time the System on the
- internal one was playing up.
- At least the story has a happy ending. In the last week, in fact, more or
- less since I started reading this very Digest, my Install 1 disk has
- magically ceased being unbootable. No more "Bad F-line..." What do the
- Apple gurus have to say about that? The Info-Mac Digest has obviously
- got hidden powers (sure, sure...)

- Interesting! When I was back in Ithaca recently, one of my old clients
- was having a very similar problem trying to back up a network to a
- DAT drive. They had tried multiple tapes, multiple drives, and different
- Macs, all to no avail. Dantz said that the error meant what it said,

-
- Adobe Type Reunion is an init which reunites the fonts in your menu
- hierarchically, whereas Font Harmony and Font/DA Utility modify the
- fonts so that there are no longer seperate entries for bold, italic,
- and bold-italic versions of the font. Selecting one of these styles
- using the Style menu actually selects the appropriate font. Apple's
- font system doesn't have style entries for things like "light",
- "black", or "condensed" so these remain as seperate menu items with
- Font Harmony and Font/DA Utility. Adobe Type Reunion knows about all
- styles, so it is probably the better choice for someone with a huge
- collection of Adobe fonts, if you don't mind having another init.

- When you put a PB to sleep the processor and HD shut down. The only thing

- This problem is as old as MathType, and it used to bother me as well, but
- in the end I came to agree with Design Sciences' point of view that the MT
- document is a temporary scratchpad (my words, not theirs), not a place for
- permanent storage. When I want to store a _lot_ of equations, without
- having to retrieve them from all over a big manuscript, I have long found
- it much more convenient to store them in an equations-only word processor
- document (Word, WriteNow, or what have you - Acta is great for that) and to
- retrieve them from there, if and when needed. You don't need MT 3.0 for
- that; it has always worked.

- The usual clue is the reaction when you point out that the reason they
- can't get their application (control panel or extension) to work with
- System 7 is because it's one or more versions out-of-date. Sometimes
- it's only a hint of body language (and I do have colleagues who've just
- never bothered to upgrade from the original MacWrite to MacWrite II or
- something else, but most of them are still using ancient Mac OS too for
- the same reason--if it ain't broke, why fix it?), often its a flat out
- admission that they don't actually own the software and aren't eligible
- for an upgrade.
-
- I agree, that the benefit of the doubt and a polite answer is the best
- approach. I even hand the foot shufflers a copy of the MacConnection
- catalog (usually the one that I happen to have) and point out that they
- can order the current version with an 800 call and have it the next day.

-
- Boy that sure does sound like the b-tree error. What VERSION of Tuner
- is in your Extensions Folder (the Get Info command will tell you).
- Given that you evidently haven't changed whatever your dealer installed,
- it may be only Tuner 1.0 whereas you need at least 1.1, and should have
- 1.1.1, to keep the problem from occurring.
-
- Whatever tricks you might be able to concoct, backing up and
- reformatting is the ONLY current way to repair the damage to the
- directory (Apple promised a new, industrial strength DFA away back when,
- but there's been no sign of it yet).
-
- >Unfortunately, it turns out that I was not shipped system disks with my
- >machine. At the moment, I am not a happy Apple customer!
-
- You've got no reason to blame Apple; they pack the System disks in the
- box with the manuals and cables. You should have required your dealer
- to deliver the disks by messenger as it's the dealers goof up (one I
- would not forgive a dealer for; take your future business somewhere
- else; if you purchase through the institution, write your purchasing
- agent a memo indicating you have not received acceptable service from
- the vendor).
-
- How did you run DFA? If you've got a DiskTools disk at least, you can
- boot from it, create a new System Folder (call it AltSystem or some
- such); use the Find command to open the disappeared System Folder and
- drag the stuff from it to the new AltSystem folder). When up the
- proverbial creek... improvise :)
-
- Everyone else! Check and make sure you have (and can find quickly if you
- need to, your original set of System disks (especially the Disk Tools
- disk)... I'll wait ;-)

- Subject: Sadistical (Stats) software
-
- The choice of a stats package really depends on what you want to do with it--
- just what are your needs and procedures of choice. For example, I lean
- heavily toward multiple regression (and all its variants) in my research.
- On the mainframe, my preference is therefore PROC GLM from the SAS package.
- JMP 2.x (pronounced "jump") from SAS institute gives a pretty good emulation
- of it as does SuperANOVA. Systat 5.x probably has the most comprehensive
- suite of routines. JMP and DataDesk from Paul Velleman (sp?-sorry Paul)
- are the best at data exploration and visualization. And these are just
- the high-end packages. If all you have to do is an occasional ANOVA and
- a correlation table, Excel 4.0 will cover it, as will MyStat or JMP IN--
- student versions of their big brothers.
-
- If you give the net a little more info, we can give you better opinions--
- not necessarily more helpful, just "better".

-
- Definitely an FAQ, but that's OK. SendPS only knows to look in
- the System Folder (not subfolders) for LaserWriter. It will
- work if you move LaserWriter to the System Folder proper.
-
- NOTE: Making a COPY of LaserWriter to the System Folder also
- works, but then LaserWriter shows up twice in the Chooser, it's
- a waste of space, and is just another thing to miss when you do
- a System software update. Making an ALIAS to LaserWriter does
- NOT work for SendPS 2.0 and Chooser doesn't like it either.
-
- Alternatives:
-
- LaserWriter Font Utility (comes with System 7 on the Tidbits disk)
-
- LaserWriter Utility (comes with new Apple LaserWriters and is on
- ftp.apple.com)
-
- Downloader (comes with all Adobe font disks and is apparently the
- replacement for SendPS, but I don't think it is freeware)
-
- Microsoft Word (format the PostScript text as style PostScript)

-
- Phil Jung asked about SPC kind of software for the Mac--he was specifically
- interested in the capabilities of Statistica/Mac. I finally found my
- stats files:
-
- Statistica seems to have been designed as a Swiss army knife package-a little
- bit of everything. It seems to be primarily for the researcher in that it
- is heavy in linear modeling (ANOVA, ANCOVA, regresion), non-par stats,
- clustering/factor analyis and time series. It appears to offer little of
- interest in control, Pareto, or Shewhart charts.
-
- On the other hand, JMP 2.0 (of which I just received a demo) offers real time
- control charts, Pareto charts and capability analysis. There is a module
- available that allows you to connect machines to the Mac via the serial port
- to allow the real-time quality analysis. It includes Mean and Range, Mean
- and Standard Deviation, Individual Measurement, Moving Range, P, NP, C and
- U charts.
-
- Hope this was of some help!
