- Subject: [*] BAD-init resubmition
-
- THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK ABOUT THIS INIT ON THE LISTS
- LATELY, SO I THOUGHT I'D UPLOAD IT. HERE'S THE ORIGINAL HEADER:
-
- From: shores@fergvax.unl.edu (Shores)
-
-
- BADInit by Giuseppe Carnevale. This *WONDERFUL* INIT can save seemingly lost
- floppy disks from the bit bucket. Ever had a "File couldn't be written and
- was skipped?" Of course you have, and this INIT fixes all that. The INIT
- fools
- the disk's desktop file into thinking that files are occupying the bad sectors
- of the disk so you can write to the good parts of the disk too. When you get
- a bad disk that had been formatted and had files on it, salvage the good files
- and tell the finder to reformat it. When the finder fails, it will eject the
- disk, but after you hit "ok" in the "Initialization Failed" dialog, another
- dialog will popup asking you if you want to format it using BAD. Hit OK to
- work BAD's magic. Likewise, with a brand new floppy that fails under the
- Finder's initialization, BAD will format it, most likely leaving over 95% of
- the disk still useable. Obviously one wouldn't want to put one's only copy
- of a doctoral thesis on the disk, but you can still use the disk for trivial
- tasks.

- Subject: [*] Bat Signal After Dark Module
-
- This AD module is similar to the Spotlights module, except that it uses a
- single spot which contains the Batman emblem. You can set whether to use a
- black or "moonlit" (dark blue) background, and whether the symbol is in
- white or yellow "light".You can also set whether the screen is cleared with
- a random scattering of bats, the size of the bat signal, and the speed.
-
- Very nicely done. And check out the module's info from within AD (click on
- the author's name below the control settings). This is almost as great as
- the module itself.

- This freeware utility by E.R. Peay compares binary or text files,

- This is a self-unstuffing archive containing three files:
- *"Postcards Demo" (368K)
- *"Postcards ad" (59K)
- *"Read Me" (5K)
-
- "Postcards Demo" is a demo of "Postcards for Shanghai II," a trio
- of scanned, photographic-quality tilesets for use with Shanghai II.
- The tilesets--Beasts, Landmarks and Tropics--include sounds,
- animations, and informational blurbs about each tile. To use the
- demo, you'll need version 1.04 of Shanghai II. An updater to
- version 1.04 is here on sumex-aim This version adds a feature
- and fixes some bugs (including the background-beep bug, the
- tournament score bug, and the A/UX bug).
-
- "Postcards ad" displays and can print an ad/order form for
- "Postcards for Shanghai II."
-
- "Read Me" contains instructions and details about the other two
- files.

-
- This set of macros and files are intended to facilitate the
- navigation and management of Excel 3.0a/Mac windows and files.
-
- The macros can provide the user with a wide list of up to 100 Excel open
- windows, from which one window can be chosen to activate. This avoids
- Excel's display under the "Window" menu, which is limited to nine
- windows, and also avoids Excel's "More Windows" narrow dialog box. The
- unhiding of a window selected from the list is automated.
-
- The macros allow you to easily transport to the data that are the bases
- of a chart by copying the formula from the chart's formula bar, then
- selecting the macros' "Goto Wrksht/Cells: Use Clipboard" command.
-
- The macros allow you to re-open a subset of a "workspace" created by it.
-
- The macros provide a quick exit from Excel, avoiding the "Save" dialog
- boxes if you know you want to get out of Excel NOW!
-
- And much more!
-
- To install these macros, decode binhex, then unstuff. It may be best to
- keep all of the files and folders together on your hard drive. After
- unstuffing, open z_DOCS.xlw and z_Archv.xlw with Excel. Read all of the
- documentation in column B of z_DOCS.xlw before proceeding any further.
- Then open zWNDMSTR.xlw with Excel. It automatically opens z_MACROS.xlm,
- the macrosheet. Next, do the tutorial in column F of zWNDMSTR.xlw.
-
- If you have a problem opening z_MACROS.xlm, re-read the documentation in
- z_DOCS.xlw regarding installation. You may need to reestablish the link
- between zWNDMSTR.xlw and z_MACROS.xlm, which should take only a minute.
-
- Note: The macros occasionally read and write to disk, and they have not
- yet been thoroughly tested with Excel 4.0.

- Shanghai II is a sequel to the popular Shanghai, winner of the
- 1986 MacUser Editor's Award for Best Entertainment Product and
- 1989 MacWorld Game Hall-of-Famer. The basic game is the same:
- remove matching pairs from a pile of 144 tiles until the pile
- is gone, or you run out of moves. But this version has a wealth
- of new features, art and sound.
-
- *2700K of b&w and 256-color scanned and hand-drawn art, 900K of
- sounds & music
- *Eight built-in animated tilesets (e.g., Sports, Animals, Fantasy)
- and the ability to use your own art
- *Thirteen built-in board layouts and a full-featured layout
- construction set so you can create your own layouts
- *Nine game variations including new types of Challenge and
- Tournament
- *More help features like Show Remaining Tiles and Suggest Move
- *Dragon's Eye: a completely new 2-player game using Shanghai-
- like rules. Can be played against a friend or against the Mac
- *Art specifically for 9" b&w, 12" color, and 13" color screens
- (there's access to all of the art that works on your screen size
- and type)
- *System 7-compatible; works on any Mac from Plus on up; no copy

- Trapper is a small extension/control panel which keeps track of how many
- times each A-Trap is called by all processes currently active (open
- applications + System + extensions + DAs + anything else that executes
- code in your machine).
- Many traps call other traps, and no trap calls itself. So, if you see

- If you have access to a smtp mail server, which is more than likely the

- Simply set up Leemail to use the server. Most smtp mail servers will hold on
- to your mail for a preset time and try to deliver it every so often. For

- 20 minutes or so for 3 days before it discards it. That way I can turn my Mac
- off at night or over the weekend, and when I come in I get all my mail 0-20

- There is a simpler way: Using ResEdit, just open BNDL #128 and close it
- again, doing nothing else. Then try to close the whole file. When ResEdit
- asks you whether or not you want to save the changes (WHAT CHANGES??),
- select Yes. That's all. ResEdit apparently realizes that the owner resource

- Yes, but transistors vs tubes isn't the issue here, it's amplifiers vs
- raincoats. McIntosh was a big name in amplifiers for large scale PA
- systems
- prior to the Rock & Roll era, when lower priced amps from Marshall, HiWatt,

- PA systems, so they had to use some brand of amplifier. My bet goes with
- the
- amplifier theory. It makes more sense that the sax player stepped up to
- the singer or announcer's mike for his solo, and thereby 'burned [his]

- Subject: Finder is not 32-bit clean
-
- A friend of mine, Fabrizio Oddone, discovered a bug in the Finder (Sys
- 7), which appears not to be 32-bit clean:
- The steps required to reproduce the bug are:
- - Make a RAM disk, either with the Memory control panel (if you've got a
- Quadra) or with AppDisk
- - Make it as big as a floppy disk (let's say 1.4Mb)
- - insert a disk in the drive (let's say we insert an 800K disk)
- - drag the disk icon onto the RAM disk icon
- The Finder will ask you if you want to substitute the contents of the
- RAM disk with the disk's ones.
- - Click on "OK"
-
- Now, the Finder will either:
- - Bomb.
- - Report that there is not enough space on disk - in this case you just
- need to open the RAM disk window, close it, try to copy the disk again,
- and this time it will bomb.
-
- When it bombs, it bombs with a Bus Error. The A4 register contains FF in
- its highest byte.
- This means that the address was once a valid 32-bit address, then the
- Finder modified its attributes directly, thus changing it when in 32-bit
- mode.
-
- If you are running in 24-bit mode, the Finder will not bomb. Instead, it
- will give Error -35, No Such Volume. So, the bug still remains.
- Maybe it's only the bug that's not 32-bit clean? (Question: can a bug be
- clean? :-)

- I also cannot resist ...
- Fortran is the language of choice for numerical problems.
- Though its semantics seem a bit arcane compared to newer
- languages there are more important points when it comes to
- choose a language for large numerical projects.
-
- 1 - reliability
- Due to the long history of fortran most compilers are
- very stable and have undergone prolongued tests
- 2 - speed
- Fortran was designed for numerical work and a lot of effort
- went into building optimizing compilers. I have yet to see
- a compiler which produces more efficient code than Fortran
- at least on the machines I have been working on
- 3 - backward compatibiliy
- There ar HUGE amounts of FORTRAN source libraries in many
- fields of science, we must retain the ability to reuse
- and modify the code, none of the converters (f2c) I know
- does a 100% job.
- 4 - array handling
- FORTRAN is the only language(*) that without the use of
- any extensions or libraries can handle multi-dimensional
- variable size arrays
- (*)As far as I know
- Also with new - undoubtedly better - programming languages
- there is a catch: You do not know if they will still exist
- in ten years.
- There is always the questions if learning a new language
- is worth the effort. It takes some time until you achieve
- proficiency and after all the programming language
- is not the subject of but a tool for doing our work.
-
- Personally I write all but the numerical intensive code
- in (Think) Pascal, for number crunching on the Mac (on
- a Q950 since last month) I use LS Fortran.
- I have tried C occasionally - I do not like it due to

- Dark Side of the Mac screen saver. The examples were written in MPW C
- and use the techniques detailed in Tech Note 256 for globals in Code
- resources. I have the following questions.
- 1) Think C automatically generates globals in Code resources indexed off
- register A4. Unless I need to explicitly reference one of the Quickdraw
- globals, can I safely assume that since it was the host application that
- called the code, the applications own A5 should be valid whenever my Code
- is in control i.e. do I need to muck about generating copies a la Note
- 256.
- 2) The calling routine passes parameters in to the code. Will RememberA0()
- and SetUpA4() be harmful in this situation (do they mess with the stack)?
- 3) Which is better, using the Think C header and declaring my routine as
- main(), or using a custom header (ie no header) and having my routine
- as the first in the file containing a dummy main() routine.
- 4) On a slightly less specific note, is it possible to pass variable arguments
- on without pulling them out of the list, i.e. can I either pass a parameter
- list into a routine or declare the parameter list as global?
-
- Hope someone can enlighten me.

-
- In my quest for MacLuggage to haul aroung our LC, I only got one
- response to my query of a month ago, and that involved a nice case,
- but more for a PowerBook than an LC. So, I went ahead and bought it
- anyway (the luggage, that is.) MacLuggage for the LC, $89+$3 for
- s+h from MacWarehouse. It's very nice, well padded and supported.
- It has pockets for the cpu, 12" monitor, extended keyboard, mouse,
- cables, modem (The mouse, cables and modem all go into one pocket),
- and an outside pocket for books (Well, I got a 500 page book on Word
- 4.0 in there). There are two straps that may be velcroed together
- to from a single carry strap for carrying by hand (Kind of like the
- ones you see on soft sided briefcases, you put the two straps to-
- gether and a piece of material with velcro on it wraps around the
- two straps forming a handle) and a shoulder strap (essential if
- you're not over 6'4", as the case is pretty tall.). It's actually
- very nice and convenient. Don't think that this will replace
- PowerBooks, though, as the whole thing weighs between 35 and 40 lbs!
- All in all, though, it works well. Depending on your budget and
- need, it is a pretty good buy. (As an aside, my wife teaches

- gig bags for instruments. I replied, "Great, I'm a real geek now,

- Seems to me this is grossly misleading, since it only applies until the
