- Subject: [*] 2 Player Island for Bolo
-
- Thanks to the help we received from EPhantom@darknova.acf-lab.alaska.edu
- (whoever they are) we have been able to create our own Bolo island.
-
- Enclosed below find a modified BMAP128 resource from Bolo which is designed
- as an island for two player combat. The motivation in creation of the BMAP
- resource was to reduce the number of pillboxes and bases which would in
- turn increase the direct tank to tank combat. This will hopefully reduce
- the number of stalemated games which seems to have been prevalent in our
- games.
-
- This map was created using MS Excel 3.0 and MS Word 4.0 and ResEdit 2.1.
- You will need ResEdit to install this resource. The procedure is as
- follows
-
- 1) BinHex decode the attached file.
-
- 2) Duplicate the Bolo application - work only on the copy!!!
-
- 3) Open the copy with ResEdit and select the BMAP resources and change the
- number of the BMAP128 resource to any other number.
-
- 4) Open the attached file with ResEdit and copy the BMAP128 resource to
- the clipboard.
-
- 5) Paste BMAP128 resource into the copy of Bolo.
-
- 6) Save changes, quit and kill 'em good.....
-
- We have developed an Excel macro/spreadsheet combination for rapid and
- automatic development of Bolo maps (resource text file for BMAP resource)
- which will help Bolo map makers until someone develops a true Bolo map
- editor. We will be testing the macro/spreadsheet over the weekend and hope
- to post it next week.
-
- Please report and problems with the attached map.

- It should be possible to interface AppleTalk Remote Access to use internet
- rather than modems on telephone lines, no ? When I am away from home, I am
- usually in a lab connected to internet, which is much faster and cheaper
- than telephone lines. And I am deeply impressed by how powerful FTPd is.
-
- Many thanks to all who told me that LeeMail and Eudora were the two internet
- mail applications for the Mac, both on Sumex. Eudora requires a POP3 server
- on a unix box, and if you want similar storing of messages for LeeMail when
- your Mac is down, you need to pass by an SMTP server, which is commonly
- available (but not quite at ILL yet - hence the old bitnet address).
-
- Several asked how I got a personal internet address number. I just asked our
- net administrator to create one. Every machine on the net can have one - its
- the last 3-4 digits that identify your machine. Just like a site telephone
- number. Amazingly, people in the US, and even Australia, have been able to
- ftp direct to my Mac in Europe. And with a 2 megabit line, its fast.

-
- mcj@chem.wayne.edu posted a response about bad F-line instructions. I
- agree with all that was said. In addition I have found that a bad
- preferences file for the program being run can cause the problem.
-
- I recently installed a new drive in my Mac IIfx and copied the contents of
- my old disk to my new one. In trying to run WordPerfect after the upgrade
- it bombed every time with a the "Bad F-Line" message. Calling WordPerfect
- they said right away "Throw away the Preferences file." It worked! It had

- >I recently downloaded Flash-it, but I can't get it to show the pointer

-
- Not to pick on this particular question, because it's only one of
- several which was answered earlier today on MAC-L (a LISTSERV list).
- Unfortunately, mailers are inconsistent about whether they construct
- headers in ways which cause LISTSERV to indicate that the same question
- was cross-posted to the digest.
-
- I can well understand the logic of the cross-post. The digest is far
- more widely read, but if someone on MAC-L happens to know the answer, it
- arrives hours sooner.
-
- The reason that such cross-posts are a problem is that because an answer
- appeared on MAC-L, all those who saw it there are unlikely to take the
- time to do it again on Info-Mac; hence, those reading the digest but not
- MAC-L miss something they might be interested in. I may have to save
- replies I post to MAC-L longer than I now do, in case it later turns out
- to be worthwhile adding them to info-mac (or perhaps not, depending on
- whether others feel they're missing out on something).
-
- My impression is that almost all readers of MAC-L read the digest, but
- not vice-versa. Possibly the better strategy would be to WAIT until the
- day AFTER posting to MAC-L before posting to the digest (or at least
- waiting until around supper time to post to info-mac). I'd see the
- benefit as: 1) if the Q&A is identifiably an FAQ, and MAC-L generates an
- answer, it may not be worthwhile sending it to info-mac as well, and 2)
- if MAC-L provides an answer, the question AND the answer could be posted
- to the digest for the benefit of the wider community; that way, the
- following digest won't contain several redundant answers.
-
- The other strategy, is post to info-mac but NOT MAC-L in any instance
- where a quick reply isn't really necessary (the majority of questions
- are not life and death, although I too am prone to being frustrated by a
- puzzle and wanting to get it resolved yesterday).
-
- Anyone have other alternatives (better ones especially welcome)?

- Subject: Font Menu Problem
-
- Seprate font names for various weights (like "B Bodoni Bold" & "I Bodoni
- Italic" come from an old-fashioned way PostScript fonts were distributed.
- The faces were given separate identities since they could not be "joined"
- together. Newer fonts already are "united" and only appear once in the
- menu.
-
- If you want do-it-yourself font harmonizing, there are two commercial
- utilities which can help you. One is Adobe's Type Reunion extension
- (about $40), which organizes the various weights into pop-up menus.
- Another is Font Harmony, which is sold with Suitcase. This goes through
- the set and "unifies" the font families as though they were sold that
- way.
-
- The downside of these two solutions is that if you don't already have
- Suitcase, you have to buy it or Type Reunion. I don't know of a share/
- freeware program that'll do the trick.

- Question on Hard Disk Compatibility
-
- The hard disk on my IIcx recently died, and I decided to ask our service
- people
- to replace the 80 MB Quantum with a higher capacity drive. They installed a
- 160
- MB Apple HD, manufactured by IBM. The system also includes a Microtech N100
- external drive, which is a Quantum.
- We discovered that the Startup Disk control panel will not work properly when
- switching from the N100 drive to the 160 MB internal. On the other hand,
- using
- a new 80 MB Apple Quantum drive works fine. Though the Startup Disk problem
- is
- the only one weUve really verified, this is obviously not a very safe
- condition
- in which to continue using such a system.
- Microtech believes that the problem is that the IBM drive uses a Western
- Digital
- controller, which is fundamentally incompatible with the controller in the
- Quantum . They say there is no way that the two drive flavors can coexist on
- the same system.
- Now, since the higher density Apple/IBM drive would cost much more than much
- larger third-party Quantum externals, I am about ready to quit trying to make
- this work,...
- But this is ridiculous. We have two drives here, both presumably conforming
- to
- SCSI and Apple standards, which are unable to operate simultaneously on the
- same
- system. My questions are:
- 1) Is Microtech right about the drives being incompatible?
- 2) Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, was it solved?
- 3) Does this make sense?

-
- I don't find that adv as much of a stretch as the "PowerBook runs MeSsy
- DOS" (without mentioning that it's a considerable extra cost and the
- performance is less than thrilling) ads of last Winter.
-
- First, under System 7 (which Apple clearly assumes in its adds),
- emptying the trash is a SECOND separate step. I rarely empty the trash
- -- I let Trashman do it, and I've set Trashman so that the file stays in
- the can long enough that by the time it's actually gone I'm very
- unlikely to change my mind.
-
- I've never actually had a need to recover a file after the trash is
- emptied, but I do happen to have Norton's FileSaver running (MacTool's
- Mirrors is hopelessly slow and has a regrettable tendency to crash file
- transfers :-( So, only because you brought it up, I launched Norton
- Utilities and selected undelete. Three clicks to bring up a couple
- hundred recoverable files (in alphabetic order). A slide to the one I
- want and another click to dump it into a "recovered files" folder in the
- root directory. Pretty painless, actually. I was even surprised at the
- age of some of the files Norton says it can still recover.
-
- I'm not that familiar with Windows, but from what I have seen Apple's
- point that Windows is a poor substitute for a Mac interface (my
- impression is that's an attraction to lots of MeSsy DOS users) is valid.

- will leave a Q950 gasping in the dust (more details in the Vaporware

- The IIcx, IIci form factor upgrades to the Q 700 NOT the 950 (only the
- 900 upgrades to a 950). If you need a Quadra now, the experience around
- here has been that the net cost is less if you sell your older Mac to

- Subject: Math Fonts (A)
-
- There have been a number of queries recently on infomac about the
- availability of math fonts. Here are a couple of suggestions.
-
- Dubl-Click (818-700-9525) does a Type 3 font called MathWhiz which has
- got a variety of symbols on it not in Symbol. If you call them, they'll
- send you a printout. If you use a DeskWriter, however, MathWhiz isn't
- a good idea, since ATM doesn't render Type 3 fonts, and you can't use
- Fontastic+ on the DublClick screen fonts to make 4x sizes. But if you
- do drafts on an IW and final output on a LW it may be worth taking
- a look at. The font is about $90.
-
- The ultimate symbol fonts are the Lucida family from Y&Y. There is a
- text font and three or four other fonts, totalling a superset of the
- full AMS symbol-set. The package comes with special variants for TeX
- users. The text font is based on Computer Modern, but is heavier in
- appearance (see e.g. any recent volume of the CSLI lecture notes for CM).
-
- The fonts are Type 1, fully hinted, rendered by ATM on the printer and on
- screen. You must be using an app that allows you turn on fractional widths,
- otherwise the screen display is pretty horrible. This may mess up other
- features of your set-up (it did mine, but that's my idiosyncrasy). Of course,
- you could do your text in another font and only switch to a Lucida font
- for symbols. Anyway, whatever you think about the screen display, the print
- out is very nice.
-
- I purchased Lucida about a month ago and returned it, in part because of
- having to enable fractional widths, but mainly because the symbol fonts
- didn't work properly with KeyCaps and, even worse, PopChar (which in my
- opinion is indispensable in this sort of situation). I sent Y&Y a letter
- of explanation, and lo and behold, they fixed the problems (PopChar appar-
- ently makes some assumptions it shouldn't re negative widths, so it wasn't
- really Y&Y's fault). They also provide a proper cheat sheet now, with
- key combinations instead of just character codes. I'm going to reorder.
-
- You can call Y&Y for a printout of the character sets, 800-742-4059.
- If you buy the fonts and then decide you don't like them, they'll
- refund your money without complaint.
-
- I see from their publicity that Scientific American is now using the
- Lucida family. Y&Y also have other font families, including a Computer
- Modern and an Euler family. I don't know what the latter does. Lucida
- is what Mac users want. With academic discount, the package is about
- $170.

- Some semi-quick comments:
-
- First, despite my e-mail address, I currently live in and log-in from
- Germany. I only mention this because about 2 days ago I had my sister
- in N.J. RUN (not walk) to the Price Club to buy me a Powerbook 100
- (thanks, btw, to the netter who pointed this out after reading MacWeek;
- I got my MacWeek 2 days later and saw the article- by which time I already
- had my Powerbook [well, my sister has my Powerbook ;-] ). Anyway,
- she told me she went in to get it and the salesman said to her (in a
- very snobby, matter-of-fact tone): "It's NOT IBM compatible." (As if that
- made it worthless). She said told him she didn't care (I would have said
- "EXACTLY the reason I'm buying it!"- but I digress). Anyway, I just
- thought I would share this with the net. I suspect the Price Club will
- sell out of these at $900/ea. DESPITE their sales tactics. One onther
- note: the current SCHOOL price on a PB 100 4/40 in Germany is DM 3,100
- (or about $2000 at the current exchange rate). My local dealer (which is
- an AppleCenter) buys one of these from Apple Deutschland for around
- $1700 (I think). It makes you wonder, doesn't it?
-
- On another (recently discussed topic) we are about to install Dispatcher
- SMTP. What this software is supposed to do (and I can let you know if it
- works when I get it running which I can't just yet because I need version
- 2.5a of Quickmail and we only have v.2.5) is let a quickmail server with
- an internet address send and receive mail to/from the internet and all
- QM users on that server. Since our LAN is connected to a CISCO router on
- internet, this will mean that I will be able to send and receive e-mail
- >From around the world right here on my Mac via QM. Dispatcher is expensive
- (about $1200), but considering that you buy it per QM Server, its not
- too bad (for us, at least).
-
- If anyone wants/needs more info, don't hesitate to e-mail me...
-
- And now for a small flame. Can someone please tell me what's going on
- at SUMEX??? Quite a number of files (qt/1984 & Dan Quayle, DeHex,Anu-graph
- [which I finally did get]) are no longer at SUMEX. These files weren't

- I have to make more room in the archive for new submissions by deleting
- files. I have to remove files with copyright problems so we won't be

-
- Broken record - IMHO (again) such a file or stack is likely to be a
- waste of time as it will be obsolete before it can be put together. The
- real shortcoming of the document that ships with the Quadra (even last
- November when it was "fresh" is that it doesn't mention thousands of
- programs that are both cache compatible and 32-bit clean). About the
- only example of non-040 compatible software I have left is Battleship
- 1.1.1 (running under the compatibility cdev at IIsi speed is plenty fast
- enough for that one ;-)
-
- >2) Has anyone tried one of the inits that is supposed to disable the 040

-
- get info-mac/cp/quadra-auto-cache-22.hqx What it does really is simply
- flush the caches on every write to cache ONLY for applications that are
- not compatible. That slows the Quadra down about as much as turning the
- caches off, but the caches actually remain on. Hence, AppleTalk's
- timing isn't messed up and compatible apps continue to run a full speed.
- It really works, although as a practical matter unless you're loaded up
- with extremely specialized software from vendors who are asleep at the
- switch, you're unlikely to need the cdev as much more than a "security
- blanket."

- My girlfriend is leaving for Germany in a matter of weeks. She'll be there a
- whole year - just her and her PB 140.
-
- I wondered if anyone knew how I could possibly get her hooked up to the nets
- so we could E-mail one another.
-
- She'll be in Hessen (near Frankfurt I think). Is there a university that
- could give her an account? If it helps, she'll be teaching in a gymnasium on
- a Fulbright Grant.
-
- I assume she'll need some sort of power-converting apparati, along with some
- phone wire connector gizmo. Anyone know about this stuff?
-
- Anyway, thanks go in advance to those kind enough to reply,

- I'd like to use a SLIP connection as an AppleTalk connection, much as ARA
- provides. Is anyone working on this?
-
- Motivation: my university & local phone co. provide high-speed DOV
- connections, with the modem provided by the university. The university
- also provides a SLIP service. It is not clear whether they'll be providing
- ARA dialup servers on the campus network. Thus, I easily have high-speed
- TCP services, but I'd really like AppleTalk across the same connection,
- so I have Chooser access to stuff.

- Sorry, if this is a FAQ but I'm just a poor PC user and dont't
- know anything about Macs...
-
- I urgently need to convert some PICT (line art) files to something
- I can read on the PC, e.g. CorelDRAW, Micrografx Designer, or EPS.
-
- The Mac people here say, they don't have such a converter.
- So, where can I FTP such a utility from?
-
- Please e-mail me because I regulary don't read this group.
-
- Thanks!
- Marco

- Folks -
-
- I want to print out Chinese characters with good resolution. My 9-pin
- Imagewriter II isn't clear enough. I'd like to purchase another impact
- printer with higher resolution. For instance, I was told that a 24-pin
- printer would do the job. Any suggestions?
