- I'm considering buying my first DOS machine in order to satiate my Ultima7
- urge. Due to the lousy graphics speed of U7, graphics speed is my main concern.
- I've read many of the ibm pc newsgroups, as well as the latest computer
- shopper and PC magazine issues. Besides suffering from information overload,
- I have a few questions:
-
- 1. Which motherboard type is the best? Local bus, ISA (yuk), or EISA?
-
- 2. With EISA or ISA, a good graphics accelerator would be needed. However,
- most of the local bus implementations have one as well! Since this PC will
- mainly be used for playing games NOT in windows, standard graphics speed
- is critical. Looking through computer shopper, most of the local bus
- accelerators use either S3 or ET4000. First I wouldn't expect accelerators
- to be needed with local bus, and second S3 has been rated to perform badly
- by PC mag for standard DOS graphics, but would local bus negate this
- problem?
-
- 3. I plan on getting a 486/33 or 486/50. The "Royal Computer" add states that
- they run their local bus video cards at the same speed (i.e. 33 or 50MHZ)
- as the CPU. I would think that this would help, or is it all hype?
-
- 4. I am most likely going to order by mail. Since I am in Ca., does anyone
- have any good comments about a non-CA company? Are there any places worth
- staying far away from?
-
- There is so much hype out there, that this is difficult to sort through. I
- wish that PC mag tested out local bus video in their previous issue. (Building
- the perfect PC)
-
- Thanks for any and all help!
