- Re: Shareware Re-distribution
-
- Mike - I got a lot of good feedback at KansasFest about what I've been
- trying to do to help spread shareware and freeware to non-modems users. I've
- taken a different approach than the one you're proposing, but everyone seems
- happy so far.
-
- I write inCider/A+'s Shareware Solutions column, and as a service to readers
- have been providing what I think of as 'companion disks'. After I submit an
- article, I contact the shareware authors I wrote about to ask permission to
- include their work on those disks (I don't do it before I write the article,
- as I don't want to let people's responses influence what I have to say in my
- column). I then write a very long article for the disk where I talked about
- the software, and generally editorialize about the importance of paying
- shareware fees. It must be working, as some shareware authors thanked me at
- KansasFest.
-
- Until recently, I asked for $5 to cover my expenses. That $5 covered postage
- anywhere in the world. I've recently changed the price to 3 disks for $10,
- but for that, did ask folks overseas to add $2 for postage.
-
- Altough I don't personally have the time to set up and manage an 'Apple II
- Shareware Clearinghouse', I personally support the idea, as I would love to
- see shareware authors get some more support from the II community.
-
- If there's anything I can do to help, just give a holler.
