-
- First, check the manual to see if this combination is a particular code for
- a certain error. In the copiers with similar mechanisms, a similar combination
- of lights blinking indicates a burned out roller heater.
-
- If the manual isn't present or doesn't contain the combination of lights as an
- error, check the roller heater. First, touch (VERY BRIEFLY! VERY HOT!) the
- exit rollers to see if they're hot. If they are, skip to **.
-
- If not, check the bulb. Lift the roller cover and get to the ends of the heater
- bulb (a thin tube which extends through the upper roller) and test the
- continuity of the bulb with an ohm meter (with the power off and cord
- unplugged). If none, get someone to replace the bulb. If the ohmage hasn't
- leaked out of the bulb (down close to 0 ohms), check the fuse. It's somewhere
- along the wiring for the heater bulb -- possibly under the plastic cover of
- the exit roller lid you lifted up to get to the rollers. or else down in the
- base of the machine, near the back.
-
- If both the bulb and fuse are good, then:
-
- ** Open the machine and check the paper sensors -- little levers lifted by
- the paper as it goes through. They're on thin silver rods. The ends of the rods
- sometimes get all gunked with paper dust, lift up, and won't fall back down.
- (You can also test your local gravity to see if it's dropping. It won't help,
- but "it's a great way to relax" - Ford Prefect). Some SMALL amounts of WD-40
- sprayed directly into the plastic cups which hold the rods, and immediately
- wiped up, will likely free them. A little hand-operation of the rod is
- helpful. Also, the actuating parts of the sensors are magents and reed
- switches. Look along the rod until you see a place where a little hammer
- contacts a small box. Sometimes junk gets stuck in these. The 'paper out'
- sensor operates in exactly the same way, and gets the same treatment.
-
- If these don't help, it's likely (though not certainly) an electronic problem.
- Contact the LaserWriter Doctor.
-
- Changing the bulb: It can be done in house by anyone with experience with
- electrical work and nimble little fingers. Magnetized screwdrivers are
- essential. A copier repair-person is just as capable to replace the bulb as
- the LW Doctor, and probably cheaper. All they need is access to Canon parts
- or generic equivalents. The LW II is functionally identical to several of the
- Canon PC-? (single digit number) copy machines, at least as far as the exit
- roller mechanism is concerned. In fact, in one of the LW machines (I can't
- recall which one) the mechanism and bulb are indentical to the copiers.
-
- I'd put money on the burned out bulb hypothesis. Check that first.
