- The difficulties with a high speed modem are common, but it's not the
- GS's fault. First off, you HAVE to have a cable with CTS/RTS handshaking
- capability. (I.E. The CTS and RTS lines must be properly connected between
- modem and computer.) This is something which typically was not necessary or
- required by your old 2400.
-
- Next, you have to verify that the settings on the modem match what your
- hardware is trying to do. If handshaking is properly enabled, most new
- high speed modems have an option which reports the highest throughput
- rate as the connect rate so that the computer won't slow down to the
- connect rate. Since you say you can log on and see the text sent to you
- but not receive anything echoed back then that doesn't sound like the
- problem. I haven't tried using my 14.4k modem with Proterm 2.2, so I can't
- tell if there's a program problem there, but there shouldn't be. I DID
- discover that on my //e, I had to swap out ACIA chips (the heart of the
- SSC) until I found one that handled the RTS-CTS handshaking right.. For
- some reason there was a problem with it thinking CTS had changed whenever
- you (ie the software) changed RTS!
-
- If you can see what the BBS you connect to is sending, but can't see what
- you are typing, that sounds like nothing so much as just a duplex problem.
- Is the BBS you're calling supposed to be echoing your input, or should you
- have your term software set at half duplex? In command mode, your modem
- should have a setting for whether or not it echoes the commands back to you.
- Also, I discovered (through a rather painful two weeks, no thanks to the
- tech support from the mfr.) that RTS is ignored in command mode! But again,
- that shouldn't be causing your problem.
-
- Well, if this doesn't help you, hopefully it will help anyone else out there
- who's having other problems.
-
- Good luck!
