- OK, I am getting ready to order a copy of OS2, but I have a question. A long
- time ago I read an article here by someone who claimed to have worked with
- IBM for many years, who insisted that a Customer Number was vitally important
- in dealing with IBM. He went on to outline some long procedure to order
- any IBM part, whereby one called this department and did this, and that
- department and did that, and so on and so forth until one finally called
- another number and actually ordered the software. Basically, it boiled
- down to getting an authentic customer number from someplace and then making
- absolutely sure to mention it whenever ordering from IBM.
- So, what I am asking is if a customer number is really that important to
- have? I understand that if one buys OS2 from someplace like Egghead, you
- can use the stores customer number, but I don't want to be dependent on some
- fly-by-night Egghead Computer store for a vital number necessary for
- technical support, CSD's, etc.
- Also, I understand that it is possible to call the IBM BBS whenever you
- please and download CSD's, so having a customer number just to be able to
- get CSD's is not necessary. However, once again I don't want to be dependent
- on some here-today-gone-tomorrow BBS for a CSD. (although I agree that the
- IBM BBS is hardly such a thing) Besides, why pay $10.00 in LD calls every
- time a CSD comes out?
- Since I am planning on eventually ordering the TCP/IP package (unless
- something better comes along) and probably more IBM OS2 specialty software
- I would like to be able to keep a relationship with IBM for awhile.
- Also, the M.I.S. people at my company say to get a customer number before
- talking to any salespeople at IBM or I'll be sorry.
-
- Can anyone care to comment?
-
- Thanks,
- Ted
