- ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF WORK AND CSCW SYSTEM DESIGN
- John Hughes and David Randall--Lancaster University
- Graham Button--Plymouth Polytechnic and Rank Xerox EuroPARC
-
- Ethnographic methodologies have long been a significant
- approach for collecting and analyzing data in anthropological
- research. Systems analysis and design, especially in the CSCW
- area, is a new environment that is profiting from this
- detailed form of observation and data collection. This
- workshop will address the ethnographic methodologies in
- practice and the refinements that are needed for
- CSCW system design.

- PRIVACY CONSIDERATIONS IN CSCW
- Andrew Clement--University of Toronto
-
- CSCW applications collect and transmit detailed information
- about individual user behaviour, much more than has
- previously been collected and often more personal. This
- workshop will discuss potential privacy issues arising from
- the installation of CSCW applications and explore a range of
- recommendations and standards to be followed in their design
- and operation.

- TECHNOLOGY AND PEDAGOGY FOR COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM
- SOLVING IN A CONTEXT FOR LEARNING
- Denis Newman--Bolt, Beranek and Newman, Inc.
- Timothy Koschmann--Southern Illinois University
-
- Education is shifting from individuals working alone toward
- group problem solving with groups involving schools and
- across schools. This workshop will explore the pedagogy and
- technology needed for this educational innovation.

- UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORTING SUCCESSFUL WORK IN SOFTWARE
- DESIGN
- John Bennett--IBM Almaden Research Center
- John Karat--IBM T. J. Watson Research Center
-
- Experienced practitioners and reflective researchers will
- come together to discuss how to improve group activities in
- software design. People selected for participation will have
- an opportunity to characterize group work in design. We will
- emphasize types of support and interventions intended to
- increase the probability of successful work processes and
- work results. The outcome will be collected techniques
- applicable to both the group processes in software design and
- development (groupware) and the use of such software in group
- meetings (CSCW).

- REAL-TIME GROUP DRAWING AND WRITING TOOLS
- Saul Greenberg and Stephen Hayne--University of Calgary
-
- Face-to-face group activities often involve drawing and
- writing. This workshop will explore the human, technical, and
- social factors of shared work spaces used by co-located or
- distributed groups to support their real time drawing and
- writing needs. Researchers and practitioners in the area will
- present their guiding principles, descriptions of
- implementations, empirical validations, burning questions and
- practical experiences. We will also discuss how such tools
- will be adapted by groups and organizations.Participants may
- become contributors to an edited book on the topic. An
- information sheet detailing the submission requirements is
- available from the Contact Person.

- CSCW TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTATIONS
- Simon Kaplan--University of Illinois
- Prasun Dewan--Purdue University
- Tom Rodden--Lancaster University
- Steve Benford--Nottingham University
- Philip Johnson--University of Hawaii
-
- Participants will address system architectures, tools and
- implementation issues relevant to designers and implementors
- of CSCW systems. Topics will include: appropriate
- architectures, models, and generic services for CSCW
- applications; an assessment of the impact of CSCW on existing
- technologies and architecture; techniques that provide a high
- degree of tailorability and flexibility for large-scale
- systems; and methods for incorporating multi-media in CSCW
- applications.

- INTERDISCIPLINARY THEORY FOR CSCW DESIGN
- Yvonne Waern--University of Stockholm
- Dan Shapiro--Lancaster University
- Thomas Schael--Instituto RSO Milan
-
- CSCW design involves techniques and practices from many
- different research disciplines which are currently not well
- integrated. Practitioners from computer science, psychology,
- management science, sociology, linguistics, and other
- disciplines will meet to discuss the key goals and
- characteristics of the disciplines, basic terms and concepts,
- and methods that are relevant to CSCW.
