- VISITING TORONTO
- The name Toronto comes from the Huron Indian word meaning
- "place of meeting." It is the ninth largest metropolis in
- North America, offering the best of big city excitement and
- small town virtues. Toronto has been called the "city of
- neighbourhoods", each with its own colour and flavour.
- Toronto has more than 80 different ethnic groups speaking
- more than 100 different languages.

- ATTRACTIONS: The CN Tower, the world's tallest free standing
- structure, has three observation decks and a rotating
- restaurant. The SkyDome, with a fully retractable roof, is
- the home of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. Maple Leaf
- Gardens hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. Art lovers
- will enjoy the Art Gallery of Ontario and its Henry Moore
- Sculpture Centre as well as many other small galleries.

- ENTERTAINMENT: There is a large selection of live theatre,
- classical music, jazz, rock, ballet, opera, and comedy.

- DINING: There are over 5,000 restaurants serving every kind
- of food imaginable, including Chinese, Middle Eastern, Thai,
- Jamaican, Mexican, Italian, Greek, Indian, French, Japanese
- and other selections.

- SHOPPING: The Eaton Centre, the city's largest indoor
- shopping complex is connected to the conference hotel via
- Toronto's Underground City, the world's largest network of
- subterranean malls. Queen Street West, with its collection of
- trendy clubs and cafÄs, offers a delightfully eclectic mix of
- stores. Toronto also has some very prestigious shopping in
- the nearby Yorkville area.

- CLIMATE: Toronto in November can be cool. The average high
- during the conference period is 12 degrees Celsius (53
- degrees Fahrenheit) with an average low of 5 degrees Celsius
- (41 degrees Fahrenheit).

- TRANSPORTATION: From the Pearson International Airport there
- are two ways to get to the downtown hotels. Limousine:
- Aerofleet Co. (449-4990) is offering a discount from the
- regular $36.00 rate to a flat rate of $30.00. The ride is 25-
- 45 minutes depending on traffic. Shuttle Bus: Drops
- passengers off at all downtown hotels. Fare is $10.00.

- SOCIAL EVENTS

- Afterglow
- Saturday October 31 to Tuesday November 3, 9:30 pm
- CSCW '92 will provide opportunities to informally meet with
- other conference attendees. Saturday evening is Halloween.
- Special diversions will be planned.

- The November 3rd US elections coincide with the conference.
- An elections evening will be hosted at the hotel. Attendees
- from the US should consult their local election office for
- information on voting by absentee ballot. This evening has
- also been reserved as free time for the conference attendees
- to provide an opportunity to explore Toronto's night life.

- Conference reception
- Royal Ontario Museum--Monday November 2 , 7:30 pm to Midnight
- The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is one of the top ten museums
- in the world. Several galleries will be opened for the
- reception including the Later Imperial China exhibit, one of
- the ROM's prized collections.

- STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

- Students are invited to participate actively in the CSCW '92
- conference. Student Volunteers will receive complimentary
- conference registration, access to reduced rate housing and
- other benefits in exchange for approximately 20 hours of work
- during the conference.

- The theme of CSCW '92 is Sharing Perspectives, and we're
- looking for a variety of students from all over to help out
