- When trying to establish a connect, your V.42-equipped modem will prompt
- the other for an error correcting link; normally, it will wait a couple of
- seconds before giving up and returning to a normal link. However, if your
- modem receives the fallback character before the timeout, it will give up
- right away rather than wait.
-
- That said, it should probably occurr to you by now that there are very few
- connections where a properly tuned fallback character accomplish anything, and
- fewer still where it has a life or death effect on the connection. Still,
- it's good to know it's there if you're worried about missing critical
- information sent by a non-V.42 modem as soon is it sees a CONNECT, while your
- modem is still sending the V.42 prompt codes and waiting for an answer.
-
- You might also look at the setting which controls what your modem does with
- the data it receives while waiting for the other modem to respond to the V.42
- and MNP prompts; the default is to discard it.
