-
- I wonder whether anyone amongst the Notabeneeri can comment on a
- kludgey bodge I have in mind....
-
- Due to the improvements in University financing (somehow, these
- involve cutting our grants) it seems that we are unlikely to ever get
- Ibid. Our standard site-licensed package is v. 3.0, and I increasingly
- get the feeling that that, as they say, is that. I have been told that
- there is no money for site-licensing Ibid, and that I need it,
- ideally, to do what I want.
-
- I have in the past made 3.0 do some things it was not designed for -
- sometimes there was a clanking sound, the bearings ran a little hot,
- and steam came out of the pipes in odd places, but it did them. Now, I
- have the following problem and have thought of what might be an
- Ibid-less solution, but I feel I may be setting forth into Outer
- Darkness.
-
- I have, and am accumulating daily, newspaper cuttings. They are
- getting unmanageable and the data inaccessible, and I have been told
- by our NB guru (To Whom All Praise Be Given, For He Is Wise, Patient
- and Knows NB - and will be reading this anyway!) that Ibid would help.
- This is a bit like being told we could have some bacon and eggs, if we
- had eggs. And some bacon. He means well, and must be as frustrated by
- Tory educational policies as I am. Funny how the word "improvement"
- means different things from what it used to. It is no longer
- synonymous with "better". It now means "cheaper".
-
- Having done some odd things with Mailmerge in the past, and having
- suffered a bit with learning Textbase, I was wondering whether I could
- get by if I used these two together. In other words, 1 cutting=1
- Mailmerge record, and 1 Mailmerge record=1 Textbase entry; and then
- index the Mailmerge file. The cuttings themselves then can be kept in
- date order. Somehow.
-
- The v. 3.0 Manual (p. D2-6) says that the last Mailmerge field can
- contain "5,000 to 10,000 characters". Why is this a range, not a set
- value? How does it compare to the Ibid comment field?
-
- Are there any ghosties, ghoulies, and other things that would go bump
- in the night if I did this? I assume that an Ibid entry is the same
- basic ASCII thingy as all NB files are - that is, there are no
- embedded unprintable control characters, and it all centres round
- commands (which I don't have, of course) between << and >>.
-
- My query therefore is whether it is possible thusly to bodge together
- something which resembles Ibid, provided one looks at it in dim light?
- And are there any pitfalls to be wary of?
-
- Happy day in my family. My son has just got himself a splendid Upper
- Second class degree in English (London University). His twin brother
- awaits his results. Serious happiness generally!
