- A reply to Dan Mandell
-
- I don't think it is as simple as "smoke and mirors", I think we have to look
- at the way things are today in education and its relationship to other social
- institutions and ask "why"....
-
- if k-12 schools ar elooking towards more local control--site base--then
- that refers to shift in control of the day to day life in the school... but
- we have to consider what "things" can teachers have (or are given) control
- over.... Think it is interesting that America 2000 calls for more
- local control while imposing outcome assessment. We all know that the
- test drives the curriculum.... esp. at a time when school bashing is in.
-
- in higher ed I see the movement towards larger classes, limiting what
- strategies are avaiable... I have sections of 80 in a hands-on ed media
- class for entry level ed majors-- then to control what is "taught"
- the univ. wants to use video and computers to deliver instruction....
- to solve the problem they have created... they say (our field) an
- instructor canbe "more" effective using multi-media than lecture... well
- maybe the problem is in the commitment to education itself... the problem
- maybe in the large lecture class idea as a solution.
-
- but then you throw in other concerns.... business for example, the changing
- nature of our economy and the job market, etc... oh yes.. the poor are
- also getting poorer.... then the question gets more complex..
-
- well these have been some ideas in response to your reply.... I still think
- the real question is who benefits from the current conditions found in
- and outside schools.....
