  1. Upgrading Packages
  2. ------------------

  4. TurboPkg will now be run in order to allow you to upgrade your system
  5. packages.  When TurboPkg starts, you will be asked for your media type
  6. - select the appropriate media type and select OK.  If you selected
  7. 'Local filesystem or CD-ROM', and you are using a CD-ROM to upgrade,
  8. use the default Base Path of "/mnt/cdrom".  Otherwise, substitute the
  9. correct settings so that TurboPkg can find your TurboLinux 3.0
  10. installation files.

  12. If you will be upgrading via FTP, select FTP and then specify that you
  13. want to get a complete distribution.  Pick the mirror closest to you
  14. (or use Custom to use a different host/pathname).
  15.  
  16. When you get to the main package selection screen, go to the Options
  17. menu.  Turn off the checkbox labelled "Show real-time size
  18. information.." (you can leave it on, but it will make turbopkg very
  19. slow when selecting/deselecting packages).  You may also (optionally)
  20. want to turn on 'Automatic Dependencies' and 'Do Downgrades'.

  22. Leave the options menu.  Now you can press either 'U' or 'N' to either
  23. upgrade all existing packages or upgrade existing packages AND install
  24. any new packages, respectively.  Alternatively, you can manually
  25. select packages and groups using the arrow keys and the space bar.

  27. Other important keys:
  28.  
  29.     F1 = main help
  30.     F2 = collapse/expand tree
  31.     F3 = package information
  32.     F4 = search
  33.  
  34. Due to some packages having new versioning conventions in 3.0, a few
  35. packages will be seen as 'downgrades' by turbopkg (they will have a
  36. '-' in the rightmost column).  These packages are less, xview,
  37. xview-devel, xview-devel-examples, xview-clients, fvwm95-icons,
  38. WindowMaker-devel, and WindowMaker-util.  Select these manually if you
  39. wish to have them, and make sure that the 'Do Downgrades' checkbox is
  40. turned on in the Options menu.  Note however that if you select 'Do
  41. Downgrades' before pressing 'N' or 'U', this will automatically be
  42. taken care of for you.

  44. Now, check over the package selections and make sure that everything
  45. is to your liking.  Select OK when you're ready to begin.

  47. If any 'Unresolved Dependencies' show up, simply hit OK and turbopkg
  48. will take care of them.
  49.  
  50. Now, the packages will be installed, and a log will be written to
  51. /tmp/turbopkg.log.
  52.  
  53. It is normal to see a warning message pop up saying that you cannot
  54. remove the kernel modules for the currently running kernel.  This is a
  55. problem with the old kernel package in 2.0 and is not really a problem
  56. at all - the upgrade will still work fine.  Unfortunately it does
  57. cause some minor screen corruption.

  59. When you understand this procedure and/or have printed out
  60. upgrade-doc2.txt, press ENTER to start turbopkg and upgrade your
  61. system, or press CTRL-C to cancel.
