Upgrading Packages ------------------ TurboPkg will now be run in order to allow you to upgrade your system packages. When TurboPkg starts, you will be asked for your media type - select the appropriate media type and select OK. If you selected 'Local filesystem or CD-ROM', and you are using a CD-ROM to upgrade, use the default Base Path of "/mnt/cdrom". Otherwise, substitute the correct settings so that TurboPkg can find your TurboLinux 3.0 installation files. If you will be upgrading via FTP, select FTP and then specify that you want to get a complete distribution. Pick the mirror closest to you (or use Custom to use a different host/pathname). When you get to the main package selection screen, go to the Options menu. Turn off the checkbox labelled "Show real-time size information.." (you can leave it on, but it will make turbopkg very slow when selecting/deselecting packages). You may also (optionally) want to turn on 'Automatic Dependencies' and 'Do Downgrades'. Leave the options menu. Now you can press either 'U' or 'N' to either upgrade all existing packages or upgrade existing packages AND install any new packages, respectively. Alternatively, you can manually select packages and groups using the arrow keys and the space bar. Other important keys: F1 = main help F2 = collapse/expand tree F3 = package information F4 = search Due to some packages having new versioning conventions in 3.0, a few packages will be seen as 'downgrades' by turbopkg (they will have a '-' in the rightmost column). These packages are less, xview, xview-devel, xview-devel-examples, xview-clients, fvwm95-icons, WindowMaker-devel, and WindowMaker-util. Select these manually if you wish to have them, and make sure that the 'Do Downgrades' checkbox is turned on in the Options menu. Note however that if you select 'Do Downgrades' before pressing 'N' or 'U', this will automatically be taken care of for you. Now, check over the package selections and make sure that everything is to your liking. Select OK when you're ready to begin. If any 'Unresolved Dependencies' show up, simply hit OK and turbopkg will take care of them. Now, the packages will be installed, and a log will be written to /tmp/turbopkg.log. It is normal to see a warning message pop up saying that you cannot remove the kernel modules for the currently running kernel. This is a problem with the old kernel package in 2.0 and is not really a problem at all - the upgrade will still work fine. Unfortunately it does cause some minor screen corruption. When you understand this procedure and/or have printed out upgrade-doc2.txt, press ENTER to start turbopkg and upgrade your system, or press CTRL-C to cancel.
