ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Printer Device Driver ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When you send a document to print, the printer driver converts the data from
your application into a language that the printer understands.
The printer driver is divided into two notebooks: Printer Properties and Job
Properties.
To print jobs correctly, you need to set properties in both notebooks.
Before you send any print jobs, use the Printer Properties notebook to
describe how your printer is physically set up (for example, which paper
sources are associated with which forms). This lets your applications
know the capabilities of your printer.
Use the Job Properties notebook to select settings that change frequently
from job to job (for example, orientation and print quality).
You usually set job properties from your application. Although this
procedure may vary between applications, general instructions are as
follows:
From your application's File menu, select Printer Setup.
In some applications this might be called Settings or Options. You
should refer to your application's user documentation for more specific
information about how to specify or change printer setup options.
Note: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties,
the printer looks for these settings in other places. For a description
of how the printer searches for job properties, see Locating Job
Properties.
For more information about using the printer driver, see the Printer
Properties Notebook and the Job Properties Notebook Help topics.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Printer Properties Notebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Before you send any print jobs, select settings in this notebook to describe
how your printer is physically set up. This enables the driver to adapt its
selections to the printer's capabilities and ensures that jobs print correctly.
Tip
Print settings that change frequently from job to job, such as
orientation, are called job properties. For information about job
properties, see the Job Properties Notebook Help topic.
The Printer Properties notebook is made up of several pages and push buttons.
To view a specific page of the notebook, click the appropriate notebook tab.
To view pages consecutively, click the controls in the top right corner of any
notebook page.
Tip
The notebook settings are for the printer named in the title bar of the
Printer Properties dialog box.

Print settings that change frequently from job to job (for example, orientation

Job properties are usually set from your application (though not all
applications call these settings job properties). For example, in some
applications, you display job properties by selecting a Setup or an Options
choice.
Note: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the
printer driver looks for these settings in other locations. For an explanation
of locations in which you can set job properties and the order in which the
printer looks at each location, see Locating Job Properties.
The Job Properties notebook is made up of several pages and push buttons. To
view a specific page of the notebook, click the appropriate notebook tab. To

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Job Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The effect of printer or job properties on a job depends on the job type:
Graphics data jobs are created by Presentation Manager* (OS/2*) programs and
typically have a graphical content. Raw data jobs are jobs sent using OS/2
operating system commands such as each of the following:
PRINT SCREEN key
COPY /B <file> LPT1
PRINT <file>
Raw data jobs typically consist of printer command language (PCL*) commands.
The following table lists which Printer Properties or Job Properties are
honored by each type of job.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Printer, Queue, and Program Job Properties Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The properties that give a print job characteristics such as print quality,
orientation, form, and font, can derive from three different sources:
If you submit a job (for example, from a DOS session) that does not have
program-specific characteristics, and does not take on the job properties
of its queue, the job is printed with the Default Job Properties you
specified in the Printer Properties dialog box during printer driver
setup.
If you submit a job (for example, from a Presentation Manager* (OS/2*)
program) that does not specify print-job characteristics, but does take
on characteristics from its queue, the job is printed with the Job
Properties you specified for that queue (by selecting the Job Properties
push button on the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings
notebook).
If your program enables you to set up job properties for a specific print
file, the job is printed with those characteristics. Program-specified
job properties override defaults of either queue or Printer Properties.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.4. Unattended Printer Operation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To maintain unattended operation of your printer, do not select an Available
Forms option for the manual paper source or the manual envelope source. If you
select a form, operator intervention is required if the printer driver prompts
for it.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.5. Locating Job Properties ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the printer
looks for these settings in other places. If your print jobs are not printing
in the way that you expect, make sure your job properties settings are set
correctly in each of the following places, in the order listed:
1. The dialog box in which your application lets you select job properties
(if your application provides a way to set job properties).
2. The Job Properties notebook displayed from the OS/2* settings notebook of
your printer object. (To display the settings notebook, click
mouse button2 on your printer object, and then select Settings. When the
settings notebook is displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then
click the Job Properties push button.)
3. The Job Properties notebook is displayed when you click the Default Job
Properties push button in the Printer Properties notebook. (To display
the Printer Properties notebook, click mouse button 2 on your printer
object, and then select Settings. When the settings notebook is
displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then double-click the driver
highlighted in Default printer driver.)
The settings you select in the Default Job Properties notebook are
considered default settings because they are used only if the printer
does not get job properties information first from the application and
then from the OS/2 printer object.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Notebook push buttons ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A row of push buttons along the bottom of each notebook (Printer Properties and
Job Properties) helps you control notebook settings. Whereas the push buttons
you see on each notebook page affect just the settings on that page, the
Notebook push buttons affect the settings for the entire notebook. The
notebook push buttons are:
