═══ 1. Printer Device Driver ═══ When you send a document to print, the printer driver converts the data from your application into a language that the printer understands. The printer driver is divided into two notebooks: Printer Properties and Job Properties. To print jobs correctly, you need to set properties in both notebooks. Before you send any print jobs, use the Printer Properties notebook to describe how your printer is physically set up (for example, which paper sources are associated with which forms). This lets your applications know the capabilities of your printer. Use the Job Properties notebook to select settings that change frequently from job to job (for example, orientation and print quality). You usually set job properties from your application. Although this procedure may vary between applications, general instructions are as follows: From your application's File menu, select Printer Setup. In some applications this might be called Settings or Options. You should refer to your application's user documentation for more specific information about how to specify or change printer setup options. Note: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the printer looks for these settings in other places. For a description of how the printer searches for job properties, see Locating Job Properties. For more information about using the printer driver, see the Printer Properties Notebook and the Job Properties Notebook Help topics. Related Topics Concepts Notebook push buttons Page push buttons Notices ═══ 2. Printer Properties Notebook ═══ Before you send any print jobs, select settings in this notebook to describe how your printer is physically set up. This enables the driver to adapt its selections to the printer's capabilities and ensures that jobs print correctly. Tip Print settings that change frequently from job to job, such as orientation, are called job properties. For information about job properties, see the Job Properties Notebook Help topic. When you select the option, a check mark appears in the check box to indicate that the option is in effect. You can clear the check box by selecting the option again. Contrast with radio button. ═══ check mark ═══ A symbol that shows that an option is active. This symbol is used in menus and check boxes. See check box. ═══ code page ═══ The set of characters used to display data on the screen or to print on the printer. ═══ duplex printing ═══ The act of printing on both the front side and back side of the paper. (2-sided printing) ═══ 2-sided printing ═══ The act of printing on both the front side and back side of the paper. (dupex printing) ═══ default ═══ A value, an attribute, or an option that is assumed when another is not explicitly specified. ═══ font ═══ A given size and style of type. A family of characters of a given size and style; for example, 9-point Helvetica*. ═══ path ═══ A statement that indicates where a file is stored. The path consists of the drive letter and all the directories that must be opened to get to a particular file. The directory names are separated by a backslash (\). The first backslash represents the root directory. The first path in the following example shows a file that is located in the root directory of a diskette in drive A; the second path in the example shows a path to font files on drive C: A:\ C:\OS2\DLL\PCL5FONT A path is sometimes followed by a file name and its extension (if there is one). ═══ printer driver ═══ A file that provides device-independence. This file describes the physical characteristics of a printer and is used to convert graphics into device-specific data at the time of printing. ═══ push button ═══ A rectangle with text inside. Push buttons are used in dialog boxes for actions that occur immediately when the push button is selected. ═══ queue ═══ A list of jobs waiting to be printed at a particular print destination. See also spooling. ═══ radio button ═══ A circle with text beside it. Radio buttons are combined to show you a fixed set of options from which only one can be selected. The circle is partially filled when an option is selected. ═══ resolution ═══ Density or sharpness of an image. For bitmap material, resolution is expressed in dots per inch (dpi), with higher quality output having more dots per inch. You can adjust resolution by changing the Print Quality setting on the Paper page of Job Properties. Low-resolution images print faster, but appear coarser than high-resolution images. ═══ spool file ═══ A file containing output data that has been saved for later processing. ═══ spooling ═══ The process of temporarily storing print jobs while waiting for an available printer or port at a print destination. Spooling jobs frees system resources from waiting for a relatively slow device to provide output, and keeps the contents of each print job separated from the contents of every other print job. ═══ symbol set ═══ A grouping of a set of characters in a specific order. ═══ typefaces ═══ Identifies the unique design characteristics of the symbols of a particular font. Courier and Times Roman are examples of typefaces. ═══ 4. Concepts ═══ The following topics explain concepts related to using the printer and the printer driver: Job Types Understanding Font Symbol Sets Printer, Queue, and Program Job Properties Setup Unattended Printer Operation Locating Job Properties ═══ 4.1. Job Types ═══ The effect of printer or job properties on a job depends on the job type: Graphics data jobs are created by Presentation Manager* (OS/2*) programs and typically have a graphical content. Raw data jobs are jobs sent using OS/2 operating system commands such as each of the following: PRINT SCREEN key COPY /B LPT1 PRINT Raw data jobs typically consist of printer command language (PCL*) commands. The following table lists which Printer Properties or Job Properties are honored by each type of job. Graphics Raw Properties Data Jobs Data Jobs ──────────────────────────────────────────── Print Quality Yes No Orientation Yes Yes Form length Yes Yes Form width Yes No Form clipping Yes No Limit Colors to 256 Yes No Document Color Yes No Halftones Yes No Brightness Yes No Contrast Yes No Character Set No Yes Font No Yes Add Line Feed to No Yes Carrier Return ═══ 4.2. Understanding Font Symbol Sets ═══ A symbol set is a unique ordering of the characters in a font. Some of the symbol sets contain characters that correspond directly to the Presentation Manager* (OS/2*) character set. The abbreviations for these symbol sets, along with the symbol set names, are as follows: PM PC-850 PC PC-8 R8 Roman-8 PD PC-8 Danish/Norwegian UK ISO 4: United Kingdom US US ASCII E1 Latin 1 WN Microsoft* Windows* DT Desktop JS JIS ASCII F0 French 0 CH Chinese DN Norwegian 1 NW Norwegian 2 S5 Portuguese 5 S6 Spanish 6 GR German SP Spanish 2 S4 Portuguese 4 IT Italian G0 German 0 S1 Spanish 1 FR French 1 VM Ventura Math VI Ventura International VU Ventura US MS PS Math TS PS Text M8 Math-8 PI Pi Font PB MS Publishing S3 Swedish/Finnish SW Swedish Names LG Legal IR IRV E5 Latin 5 RX Roman Extension MC MC Text W1 Windows 3.1 L1 WE Windows 3.1 L2 WT Windows 3.1 L5 E2 Latin 2 PT PC-8 Turkish PE PC-852 PL PC-8 Polish Mazovia WR Windows Cyrillic WL Windows Baltic E6 ISO 8859-10 Latin 6 ═══ 4.3. Printer, Queue, and Program Job Properties Setup ═══ The properties that give a print job characteristics such as print quality, orientation, form, and font, can derive from three different sources: If you submit a job (for example, from a DOS session) that does not have program-specific characteristics, and does not take on the job properties of its queue, the job is printed with the Default Job Properties you specified in the Printer Properties dialog box during printer driver setup. If you submit a job (for example, from a Presentation Manager* (OS/2*) program) that does not specify print-job characteristics, but does take on characteristics from its queue, the job is printed with the Job Properties you specified for that queue (by selecting the Job Properties push button on the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings notebook). If your program enables you to set up job properties for a specific print file, the job is printed with those characteristics. Program-specified job properties override defaults of either queue or Printer Properties. ═══ 4.4. Unattended Printer Operation ═══ To maintain unattended operation of your printer, do not select an Available Forms option for the manual paper source or the manual envelope source. If you select a form, operator intervention is required if the printer driver prompts for it. ═══ 4.5. Locating Job Properties ═══ If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the printer looks for these settings in other places. If your print jobs are not printing in the way that you expect, make sure your job properties settings are set correctly in each of the following places, in the order listed: 1. The dialog box in which your application lets you select job properties (if your application provides a way to set job properties). 2. The Job Properties notebook displayed from the OS/2* settings notebook of your printer object. (To display the settings notebook, click mouse button2 on your printer object, and then select Settings. When the settings notebook is displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then click the Job Properties push button.) 3. The Job Properties notebook is displayed when you click the Default Job Properties push button in the Printer Properties notebook. (To display the Printer Properties notebook, click mouse button 2 on your printer object, and then select Settings. When the settings notebook is displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then double-click the driver highlighted in Default printer driver.) The settings you select in the Default Job Properties notebook are considered default settings because they are used only if the printer does not get job properties information first from the application and then from the OS/2 printer object. ═══ 5. Notebook push buttons ═══ A row of push buttons along the bottom of each notebook (Printer Properties and Job Properties) helps you control notebook settings. Whereas the push buttons you see on each notebook page affect just the settings on that page, the Notebook push buttons affect the settings for the entire notebook. The notebook push buttons are: Save Cancel Default Job Properties (on Printer Properties notebook only) Default All Related Topic Page push buttons ═══ 5.1. Save ═══ Click the Save push button to save all changes you have made to the notebook, and then close the dialog box containing the notebook. If you do not select this push button, any change you have made to any page of the notebook is not sent to the printer driver. Double-clicking the title bar icon in the upper left corner of the notebook also saves your changes and closes the dialog box. If you reach Job Properties by: Clicking the Default Job Properties push button in the Printer Properties notebook, you save changes by first selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook, and then selecting save in the Printer Properties notebook. Clicking the Job Properties push button on the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings notebook, you save changes by selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook. Related Topics Undo Save Notebook push buttons ═══ 5.3. Default Job Properties ═══ Click the Default Job Properties push button to display the Job Properties notebook. This notebook lets you select settings that change frequently from job to job (for example, orientation). Job properties are usually set from your application, though not all applications call these settings job properties. For example, in some applications, you display job properties by selecting a Setup or an Options choice. Notes: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the printer looks for these settings in other locations. For an explanation of locations in which you can set job properties and the order in which the printer looks at each location, see Locating Job Properties. Clicking the Default Job Properties push button does not display the same settings as those displayed when you click the Job properties push button on the OS/2* settings notebook. For an explanation of locations in which you can set job properties and the order in which the printer looks at each location, see Locating Job Properties. If you reach Job Properties by clicking the Default Job Properties push button in the Printer Properties notebook, you save changes by first selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook, and then selecting save in the Printer Properties notebook. If you reach Job Properties by clicking the Job Properties push button on the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings notebook, you save changes by selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook.
