DESCRIPTION
___________
With IBM Tutorial Manager/2 version 2 you can create stand-alone
training modules to be used anywhere and without expensive training
facilities. The tutorial can be linked to business applications to
speed up learning and improve productivity. You can build prototypes
of applications to test usa-bility and cost effectiveness.
The product contains the following four components:
1. The Authoring Tool
o is used for production, testing, and preparation of tutorials.
2. The Compiler
o parses and compacts final tutorials.
3. The Presentation Component
o runs the compiled tutorials.
4. The Capturing Tool
o generates window definitions from the OS/2 Presentation Manager.
The author creates ASCII course files with easy to learn "GML like"
control tags in any text editor. Created tutorial files can be tested
with the authoring tool and then compiled for optimal use by the
presentation tool.
o runs as OS/2 Presentation Manager application.
o any application can activate a tutorial for processing.
o a new authoring language using GML/SGML like tags.
o creation and simulation of:
- Action Bars
- Pulldown Menus
- Popup Menus
- Listboxes
- Buttons (including user created buttons)
- Mouse and icon movements
- All standard PM and CUA'91 controls
o graphics support for displaying graphics in the format of Bitmaps,
Metafiles, and Icons.
o building index and list of contents dynamically.
o pre-compiler to compress and improve performance of tutorial material
o conditional execution through the use of IF, ELSE, CASE, and WHEN.
o passing control to other course parts or programs with BRANCH.
o BREAK, IMBED, CALL, EXIT, and HYPERTEXT links.
o loop processing with FOR, WHILE, REPEAT, and UNTIL.
o use of author defined macros.
o tutorial debugging as an integrated part of the authoring tool.
o import and export of dialog resources.
o supplying help with the tutorial through the applications or the
tutorials own IPF help file.
o enabling a tutorial for DBCS.
o answer analysis through the use of a MATCH function.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND TRAINING JUST-IN-TIME AT WORK (AND AT HOME)
A multitude of new uses and users in the computing world is changing
the training and information technology with new opportunities to
provide more effective and efficient skill development.
It is obvious that a more modular, flexible and individual approach
saves cost and downtime. Computer Based Training courses are more
cost efficient than conventional classroom training. Greater savings
are realized as more people are trained at various locations
throughout an organization.
The new computing direction to client/server, work-group and other
architec-tural trends requires a rethinking of end-user education and
new levels of ease-of-use, considering the training provided to the
end-users. Application specific training can be best done using
'just-in-time training', i.e. tutorials integrated into the
application.
IBM's Tutorial Manager/2 version 2 is a tool to develop and run
interactive computer based tutorials, presentations and training. It
will help you create fast and effective training for your employees
and together with other IBM products will help ensure your customers
are handled quickly and efficiently.
The IBM Tutorial Manager/2 version 2 addresses the following markets:
1. Application development
Developers can either build stand-alone tutorials or integrate the
tutorials in their application.
The usage throughout the development cycle is
o Early and application-independent development of on-line product
information
o Information reuse
o Easy application simulation in early project stages to e.g.
evaluate user interfaces
o Develop tutorial in parallel to the application itself
o Ship Presentation Services with application to provide integrated
tutorial
2. Computer Based Training
All enterprise organizations with a need to educate the employees or
customers.
The benefits for the customers are reduced costs for user training.
Improved training results by interactive and dynamic information
(tutorials).
3. Kiosk systems
Any time you are e.g. asking for a guided tour (exhibition, museum,
art gallery) a kiosk system is able to provide this service.
A 24 h service offering without any personnel: a kiosk system can
help the user in case of any question 'what to do next?'.
4. Service offering
Writing tutorials and present the solution with animation, video,
sound and user training, requires an experienced MultiMedia team.
National Language Support is expanded to 3 languages. Menus, messages and
publications will be translated for the following countries: France,
Germany, and Japan.
