  1. OS/2 PROVIDES ENERGY BOOST AT MOBIL NATURAL GAS

  4.      AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 6, 1993 . . . IBM's award-winning OS/2*
  5. PC operating system is helping Mobil Natural Gas respond to, and
  6. stay ahead of, changing business conditions in the
  7. energy field.
  8.      "The business unit is responsible for the sales and
  9. delivery of natural gas from the wellhead to the burner tip,"
  10. said Art Wengler, team leader, technology group, Mobil Natural
  11. Gas.  "In partnership with our vendors, we've developed a
  12. mission-critical line of business applications for marketing
  13. natural gas."
  14.      The Information Systems Group has responsibility for
  15. developing the computer systems that market Mobil's natural gas
  16. supply in Canada and the United States -- "everything from order
  17. entry systems to capture the sales order, matching them with the
  18. supplies of gas and then moving the gas through the various
  19. pipelines to our customers in the most cost effective manner," he
  20. said.
  21.      Like many businesses, Mobil Natural Gas has been
  22. rightsizing from host-based systems to a client/server
  23. environment.  "We have a new generation of product and needed the
  24. power and reliability of OS/2 to run multiple applications on the
  25. desktop simultaneously," Wengler said.
  26.      To handle the type of programming and applications that
  27. Mobil Natural Gas needs, intense, complex transactions must be
  28. run against the database.
  29.     "We need to manipulate data, and OS/2 combined with
  30. IBM's Distributed Relational Database Architecture product has
  31. helped us do that," said Wengler.  "When we started out, we had
  32. 'dumb' terminals connected to mainframes.  We wanted to leverage
  33. our investment in PCs by moving the application logic from the
  34. mainframe to the workstation.  OS/2 helped us gain control of the
  35. problem locally.
  36.     "Additionally, the innovative Workplace Shell graphical
  37. user interface helped tremendously," said Wengler.  "Our training
  38. needs have been greatly reduced."
  39.     But what OS/2 has really done is help the company
  40. attain its strategic goals.  "Our mission here at Mobil Natural
  41. Gas is to be the supplier of choice," said Wengler.  "We have
  42. chosen to do that by combining talent, teamwork and technology.
  43. And the technology we're committed to is OS/2."
