  11. networks, connecting 2900 employees together.  Mission-critical
  12. applications running under OS/2 at Fireman's Fund perform core business
  13. functions in the areas of commercial and personal insurance, claims
  14. processing, and the processing of specialized areas such as excess
  15. liability.

  18. provide better service and process claims faster.  During the Oakland
  19. California Fire catastrophe of 1991, for example, employees at Fireman's
  20. Fund built a complete claims adjusting database with Lotus Notes and
  21. OS/2 to manage and track the onslaught of customer transactions.

  23. In just 24 hours, the company set up workstations in hotel rooms, where
  24. they were able to process claims adjustments immediately.  Without the
  25. multitasking and communications capabilities of OS/2, it would have been
  26. impossible for the company to handle the volumes of information as
  27. efficiently, or with as much data integrity, as they did.  These
  28. OS/2-related efficiencies are being realized throughout the company; in
  29. addition, the Systems organization at Fireman's Fund has realized a 30%
  30. reduction in direct expenses over the past four years during which time
  31. the OS/2 applications were implemented.
