  10. The method of delivering IBM Online Book Collection Kits through the
  11. 5636-PUB Library Offering is being evaluated to ensure customers
  12. receive product information in the timeliest way.  The delivery of
  13. licensed books is also being evaluated.
  14.  
  15. The online book collection kits were designed to periodically deliver
  16. IBM documentation on a subscription basis.  However, since more
  17. product information is being delivered as part of the product
  18. shipment group, the frequency of updates for some of the collection
  19. kits has become irregular.
  20.  
  21. Certain online book collection kits will be withdrawn from the
  22. 5636-PUB Library Offering in coming months.  Other collection kits
  23. will be evaluated for future withdrawal.  No new collection kits will
  24. be added to the 5636-PUB Library Offering.
  25.  
  26. Not all online libraries are offered through the 5636-PUB Library
  27. Offering.  Many are available only through the publication channels
  28. of PUBORDER and System Library Subscription Service (SLSS), and some
  29. are available as priced features.  But everything delivered through
  30. the 5636-PUB Library Offering is already available through the
  31. publication channels.

  33. Collection kits will no longer be used to deliver IBM licensed
  34. documentation.  Beginning first quarter 1997, the licensed files and
  35. CD Showcase (R) materials will be removed from these collections:
  36.  
  37. o  MVS (R) Collection Kit (SK2T-0710)
  38. o  Networking Collection Kit (SK2T-6012)
  39. o  VSE Collection Kit (SK2T-0060)
  40. o  Transaction Processing and Data Collection Kit (SK2T-0730)

  42. The licensed files will ship to customers as part of the product
  43. shipment group.

  45. DESCRIPTION
  46.  
  47. The availability of many online book collection kits through the
  48. 5636-PUB Library Offering was announced in Software Announcement
  49. 292-450, dated August 25, 1992.  This delivery method allows
  50. customers to subscribe to collection kits through the software
  51. fulfillment channel.  Subscriptions are billed at a predetermined
  52. annual fee, which is calculated by multiplying the PUBORDER and SLSS
  53. single-issue price by the number of updates expected for the upcoming
  54. year.

  56. Since more information is being integrated with the product code and
  57. online books are being delivered as priced features, the frequency of
  58. updates for some of the announced collection kits is becoming
  59. irregular.  In order to preserve customer value, selected collection
  60. kits will be individually withdrawn from the 5636-PUB Library
  61. Offering in coming months.  The specific kits targeted for initial
  62. withdrawal from 5636-PUB are those collections that IBM considers
  63. "value-add."  These value-add collections provide optional,
  64. value-added online documentation related to many different products
  65. on various platforms.  This documentation is not available separately
  66. as part of any product shipment group.  The remaining collection kits
  67. that will be individually evaluated for future withdrawal from
  68. 5636-PUB are categorized as "entitled." Entitled publications deliver
  69. information related to various products with base materials (5XXX),
  70. one free copy (7XXX), and/or separately priced features (8XXX).

  97. Not all value-add online libraries are offered through the 5636-PUB
  98. Library Offering.  Many are available only through the publication
  99. channels of PUBORDER and SLSS, and some are available as priced
  100. features with the product shipment group.  Removal of these
  101. collections from the 5636-PUB Library Offering will provide a
  102. consistent means for customers to order all IBM value-add online
  103. library collections.  The publication channels also afford the
  104. flexibility of swift pricing actions such as period discounts and
  105. discounted BOFs (bill of forms).  And, as previously mentioned,
  106. honoring an established price predicated on an accurate forecast of
  107. expected updates has proven difficult for some kits whose updates
  108. have become irregular.  SLSS subscriptions are invoiced on a
  109. per-order basis.

  111. No new collection kits will be added to the 5636-PUB Library
  112. Offering.  Further notification will be provided as individual kits
  113. are withdrawn.  Announcements will be distributed to all existing
  114. U.S. users recommending that they establish an SLSS subscription
  115. (SLSS FNO -- Form Number Only) (or add to an existing subscription)
  116. for each of the kit publication numbers they want to receive in lieu
  117. of their 5636-PUB subscription.

  119. The decision to withdraw entitled collections from the 5636-PUB
  120. Library Offering will follow similar logic.  These kits are already
  121. delivered with various products in the U.S. as base materials (5XXX),
  122. one free copy (7XXX), and/or separately priced features (8XXX).
  123. Actions will be taken to ensure continuous delivery to customers
  124. currently subscribing through 5636-PUB.  The suggested method to
  125. subscribe for additional quantities is again, SLSS FNO.  Many of the
  126. same benefits described for value-add kits through the publication
  127. channels also apply to additional copies of entitled kits, namely,
  128. consistent ordering channel, possible discounting, and per-order
  129. invoicing.

  131. This announcement coincides with the IBM Information Development
  132. strategy to deliver entitled product information with the product
  133. code shipment.  Many value-add collections will continue to be
  134. delivered on quarterly release schedules but will not be required as
  135. a function of the annual license charge pricing policy currently in
  136. effect for the 5636-PUB Library Offering.  Developers may exercise
  137. discretion and latitude in formulating new releases based on the
  138. extent of product activity between update intervals.

  140. Removal of Licensed Books from Online Library Collections
  141.  
  142. IBM Software Announcement 294-431, dated July 12, 1994, stated that
  143. IBM would begin to ship licensed files on CD-ROM collection kits.
  144. The licensed files would be encrypted with CD Showcase.  Since that
  145. announcement, four collection kits have used CD Showcase to ship
  146. licensed documentation.  Those collections are the MVS Collection Kit
  147. (SK2T-0710), the Networking Collection Kit (SK2T-6012), the VSE
  148. Collection Kit (SK2T-0060), and the Transaction Processing and Data
  149. Collection Kit (SK2T-0730).  Beginning first quarter 1997, the
  150. licensed files and CD Showcase materials will be removed from these
  151. collections.

  153. IBM intends to remove all licensed files from the four collections by
  154. second quarter 1997.  The long-term goal is to reduce the amount of
  155. information that needs to be licensed.  For the short term, the
  156. licensed information will continue to be shipped to the customer, but
  157. in a manner that coincides with the IBM Information Development
  158. strategy to deliver entitled product information with the product
  159. code shipment.  Some products may unlicense their previously licensed
  160. information; some may ship the licensed books on the same media as
  161. the code; others may choose to create a licensed product CD-ROM that
  162. contains the unencrypted licensed documentation for the product; some
  163. legacy products, however, may choose to ship the licensed books in
  164. hardcopy format only.
