DESCRIPTION
CallPath SwitchServer/2 Computer Telephony Software
CallPath provides software which enables applications to link the
data-processing power of a computer with the telephony capabilities
of telephone systems. IBM's CallPath family has been an industry
leader in the computer telephony networking area since it's
introduction in 1989, by providing and consistently enhancing rich
application-enabling capabilities and providing the broadest
telephone system interface coverage in the industry.
CallPath SwitchServer/2 is a key component in the implementation of
IBM's CallPath Services Architecture. It provides the mapping
between the host application programming interface and the telephone
systems' specific formats and protocols used by the attached
telephone system. The main tasks are protocol conversion, message
mapping, and host interface support. These involve the following
actions:
o Receiving requests for telephone system functions from the host,
converting them to requests that the telephone system understands,
and sending requests to the telephone system; and
o Receiving messages from the telephone system, converting them to
requests that the hosts understands, and sending the messages to
the appropriate host; and
o Sorting requests and responses to and from multiple hosts.
CallPath SwitchServer/2 is enhanced to provide worldwide support for
new features of the following telephone systems' software:
o Lucent DEFINITY Generic 3 Version 5 CallVisor ASAI
o Nortel Meridian 1 Communications System Release and Meridian Link
Release 5 software
o Nortel DMS-100 BCS 33 through BCS 36
o Siemens 9751 Computerized Branch Exchange (CBX) Release 9006.3i
o Alcatel 4400
o Ericsson MD110
o Mitel SX-2000 LIGHT

Contact your telephone system representative for more details.
Overall, IBM now supports 20 telephone systems from 14 vendors, one
of the broadest offerings by any vendor in the industry. This is but
one example of IBM's commitment to openness and broad computer
telephony support.
These IBM supplied SwitchServer/2 software products, connecting the
telephone systems to CallPath hosts, are supported by the following
members of the CallPath product family:
o CallPath Server Version 2.1, on all three platforms OS/2, AIX (R),
and Microsoft (R) Windows (R) NT
o CallPath CallCoordinator (TM)/2 V2.1
o CallPath CallCoordinator for Windows V1
o CallPath for OS/400 (R) Version 3 Release 2 or Version 3 Release 7
via SwitchServer/2, in compatibility mode
o CallPath CICS/MVS (TM) via SwitchServer/2, in compatibility mode
Note: Compatibility mode denotes support for the announced telephone
system features, but without exploitation of these features.
The above CallPath products represent the enabling of the CallPath
API across four IBM operating system environments: CICS/MVS (R),
Application System/400 (R), AIX, and OS/2 Warp. In addition, the
CallPath clients include support for the following non-IBM operating
systems: Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 3.11, HP-UX,
SCO Unix, and Sun Solaris.
CallPath SwitchServer/2 Features
o Multiple Host Connectivity: A single CallPath SwitchServer/2 can
support one or more hosts running any combination of CallPath
CICS/MVS (R), CallPath for OS/400, CallPath Server for OS/2, AIX,
and Windows NT.
o Network Management: CallPath SwitchServer/2 errors and status used
for network management may be reported by utilizing IBM's NetView
(R) program suite.
o Remote Console Support: CallPath SwitchServer/2 can be operated
from a remote console by using IBM's Distributed Console Access
Facility (DCAF) which allows one personal computer to control and
monitor the display and keyboard input of another.
o System Administration and Problem Determination: CallPath
SwitchServer/2 provides system administration and problem
determination facilities through a consistent user-friendly
interface. The following tasks can be performed using CallPath
SwitchServer/2:
- Activation and deactivation of communications with the
telephone system
- Traffic measurement
- Problem determination
- Performance measurements
o Unattended Operation: The person responsible for monitoring
communications can use CallPath SwitchServer/2 to gather traffic
statistics or to determine the cause of problems. However,
CallPath SwitchServer/2 can be left unattended during normal
operation because so much happens automatically when hosts or
SwitchServer/2 automatically restart.
CallPath Year 2000 Ready
CallPath SwitchServer/2 V2.1 is ready for the year 2000 changeover at
availability date. IBM is heavily involved in helping to prepare
customers for the year 2000 and has created many venues for
accomplishing this including:
o Providing customers with worldwide seminars
o Offering tools from IBM and other vendors
o Providing implementation services in a year 2000 project
o Providing consulting services
o Maintaining a web site that is devoted to this critical topic

Standards Activities
The telecommunications industry is moving towards common,
standardized protocols supported by multiple computer and telephone
systems manufacturers and away from proprietary protocols. IBM is
participating in or monitoring efforts of national and international
standards organizations including the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) and the European Computer Manufacturers Association
(ECMA). When Standards are approved and implemented by telephone
system manufacturers, IBM provides mapping between the CallPath
Services API and the standard-defined formats and protocols. Mapping
to the evolving standards is expected to have little, if any, impact
on the CallPath Services API or the applications written to the API.
IBM is a founding member of Versit and has dedicated significant
resources to making the 6 volume switch to computer interface
definition one of the most complete in the industry. This work has
been submitted to the Enterprise Computer Telephony Forum (ECTF) for
implementation. This is another instance where IBM is looking to
make things easier for the end user, implementing standards in an
evolving telephony environment. IBM has personnel dedicated to ECTF,
working on different committees to ensure IBM provides maximum
contribution.
In addition, IBM chairs the CSTA committee of ECMA, one of the main
standards body in the networked industry.

features of OS/2 operating system being run. Also, CallPath Server/2
provides password protection to access the system management
functions.
Access to IBM CallPath SwitchServer/2 is controlled by a password; no
administration or problem determination functions can be called up
until the user has entered the correct password. After using these
facilities, the user can lock the program again to prevent
unauthorized use. The lock does not prevent the execution of the
basic functions of sending and receiving messages and requests.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and

ORDERING INFORMATION
Some changes have been made to the terminology used for IBM software.
These changes do not affect terms and conditions, charges, or
ordering processes.
Key elements are:
o License: The license shows rights and obligations that complement
copyright protection provided by law, and applies to all use of
IBM software.
o Charging: IBM software is charged according to the number of Use
Authorizations acquired. Definition of this Use and its
associated charges for a given product are stated in the product
announcement. Use Authorizations come with the Program Package or
are available separately, and may be for users or resources. They
are reflected as Proofs of Entitlement (PoE), provided by IBM.
o Supply of Code: The software program itself will be available on
CD-ROM.
This supply is accompanied by a Use Authorization.
The following highlights the key changes.
Previous Terminology New Terminology
Program Package Program Package
