  6. This document BRIEFLY describes new features and functions in
  7. FrontDoor 2.25.SW since version 2.12.SW. An attempt has been made to
  8. keep the list as concise and as to the point as possible.
  9.  
  10. For more detailed information about corrected problems and bugs since
  11. 2.12.SW, please refer to FDFIXES.225.

  13.  
  14. General
  15. =======
  16.  
  17. (*) All FrontDoor programs (FD, FM, FDNC, and FDSETUP) now require
  18.     that a 80286 CPU or above is present. The NEC V20 CPU will also
  19.     work for this purpose.
  20.  
  21. (*) Support for up to 30+1 network addresses/AKAs.
  22.  
  23. (*) Mouse support in dialogs, pick lists, and menus (except FDSETUP).
  24.  
  25. (*) Improved behavior in multi-tasking environments such as W95, WNT,
  26.     OS/2, and DESQview.
  27.  
  28. (*) Use of virtual memory (EMS/XMS/Disk) for temporary data storage.
  29.     This allows the various programs to display lists (to choose from)
  30.     with more items than can fit in conventional RAM. FDSETUP does not
  31.     use virtual memory.
  32.  
  33. (*) Improved nodelist browsing; with proper support for zone entries
  34.     with higher numbers than regions and nets within that zone.
  35.  
  36. (*) File and directory browsers when selecting files for input and
  37.     output (except FDSETUP).

  40. FD (Mailer)
  41. ===========
  42.  
  43. (*) Support for a static queue (STQ); dramatically extending the
  44.     capabilities and capacity of FD as a store-and-forward e-mail
  45.     system. This is a particularly welcome addition for anyone
  46.     with downlinks.
  47.  
  48. (*) Much improved event handling, specially in regards to overlapping
  49.     events.
  50.  
  51. (*) Improved handling of CONNECT messages.
  52.  
  53. (*) Support for inbound 0000<PointNumber>.REQ-style requests that some
  54.     other software insist on sending when configured as a Client/Point
  55.     system.
  56.  
  57. (*) Improved mail routing.
  58.  
  59. (*) New activity monitor database interface allowing external
  60.     applications to monitor one or more FDs from another computer.
  61.     Definite Solutions has released FDACTMON, an activity monitor
  62.     for FD; the initial release is a Win 3.x-compatible application.
  63.  
  64. (*) Support for launching an external voice mail application when
  65.     receiving "VOICE" (or similar) has been added.
  66.  
  67. (*) Support for automated time synchronization has been added.
  68.  
  69. (*) More flexibility in the modem manager used to control how and if
  70.     FD dials a specific system.
  71.  
  72. (*) Support for EMSI/MD5; this is a more secure session-level password
  73.     exchange mechanism where no clear-text passwords are transmitted.
  74.     This feature is only available if FD is running on a system with a
  75.     80386 or better CPU. Kudos to Ray Gwinn (of X00/SIO fame) for the
  76.     assembler code implementing the MD5 algorithm.

  78. (*) Much improved script language with support for calling of external
  79.     programs, checking for errorlevels, checking for semaphore files,
  80.     creating semaphore files, and more.
  81.  
  82. (*) The fixed-number limit on the number of entries in the security
  83.     manager (session password) database has been removed in FD.
  84.  
  85. (*) Improved handling of Internet-addresses used as telephone numbers
  86.     to "dial" remote systems using Telnet/VMODEM/etc.
  87.  
  88. (*) Internal Fax reception for ZyXEL-modem owners.
  89.  
  90. (*) Handling of non-DOS filenames in attachments has been added; FD
  91.     can now safely be used as a "transit site" for two, for example,
  92.     OS/2 systems sending attachments with "long filenames" between
  93.     each other. Furthermore, FD will be able to handle the reception
  94.     of duplicate filenames and passing the correct file *and* filename
  95.     onto the final destination.

  97. (*) Support for the /IGNOREOTHERPKT command-line option (and FDOPT
  98.     setting IGNOREOTHERPKT) has been added; this is not listed in the
  99.     documentation. Use of this option is only useful if the NOUNPACK
  100.     option is not used. IGNOREOTHERPKT specifies that FD should only
  101.     unpack mail packets that it receives from a remote system; i.e. it
  102.     should ignore .PKT files it finds in either of the inbound
  103.     directories.

  106. FM (Editor)
  107. ===========
  108.  
  109. (*) Support for the JAM message base format.
  110.  
  111. (*) Support for folder separators; allowing an almost group-like
  112.     handling of folders.

  114. (*) Improved handling of message-text quoting when commenting and
  115.     replying to messages; support for original sender initials, etc.

  117. (*) Much improved message Survey functionality.

  119. (*) Support for "Bounce Reply" function..

  130. (*) FM should now display and support four-digit years everywhere

  136. (*) Improved handling of Carbon Copies; when writing new messages and
  137.     replying to existing messages; up to 2000 recipients can be added.
  138.     Support for advanced CCL (Carbon Copy List) files with specific
  139.     message status for each recipient, etc.

  141. (*) Support for random as well as truly empty origin-line information.

  143. (*) The "TO:" line inserted at top of "UUCP" messages is now visible
  144.     immediately when the cursor appears in the text window.

  147. Terminal
  148. ========

  150. (*) Support for Latin1 character-set translation.

  152. (*) Improved phone directory functionality; including the Terminal
  153.     "remembering" queued entries when the phone directory window is
  154.     closed.

  156. (*) Support for running a script from within the Terminal at any time;
  157.     i.e. not just to establish a connection with a remote system.

  159. (*) Improved Xmodem file-transfer protocol; it should finally be
  160.     possible to use the Terminal to update modem firmware with modems
  161.     that support the Xmodem protocol for this.
  162.  
  163. (*) Improved VT52, VT100, ANSI, and AVATAR/0+ (AVT/0+) emulation.

  165. (*) Improved Zmodem file-transfer protocol.

  168. FDNC (Nodelist compiler/manager)
  169. ================================
  170.  
  171. (*) Removed limit of 65535 entries in the nodelist database.
  172.  
  173. (*) Improved handling of "Internet-callable" systems and the telephone
  174.     number translation for such systems.
  175.  
  176. (*) Some very basic logging has been added to FDNC when either of the
  177.     /F, /C, and /P commands is used from the command-line. This may
  178.     help in tracking down corrupt nodelist source files. FDNC will
  179.     use whatever log file has been configured in FDSETUP.
  180.     
  181. (*) Support for the "IGNOREBADNL" keyword in FDNODE.CTL was added
  182.     (this keyword is not listed in the documentation). When FDNC
  183.     encounters this keyword in FDNODE.CTL, it will ignore any nodelist
  184.     source file errors (unless they are of fatal nature).
  185.     
  186. (*) Internal ASCII file editor with cut and paste support.
  187.  
  188. (*) Much improved user interface.

  191. FDSETUP (Configuration)
  192. =======================
  193.  
  194. (*) Improved Folder Manager with support for separators, allowing an
  195.     almost group-like handling of folders, and the ability to handle
  196.     more folders.
  197.  
  198. (*) Increased capacity in the Security Manager; up to 10000 entries
  199.     should now be supported.
  200.  
  201. (*) Improved Event Manager.
