  4. Welcome to BackMaster 3.01.
  5.  
  6. This file contains information needed to install BackMaster 3.01
  7. and additional information not included in the product documentation.

  26. To install BackMaster 3.01 for OS/2, you must have OS/2
  27. installed.  OS/2 operating system v2.1 and later is supported.
  28. (SMP excluded)
  29.  
  30.    - Hardware Requirements
  31.  
  32. BackMaster 3.01's computer hardware requirements are the same 
  33. as previous versions.  Intel compatible minimum 386 CPU/8 MB Ram.
  34. 486 CPU/12 MB Ram recommended. 
  35.  
  36. Refer to the Supported Tape Drive Section for a complete listing of 
  37. tape drives, high-speed adapter cards, and tape cartridge types that 
  38. BackMaster 3.01 software now supports.
  39.    
  40. Installing BackMaster 3.01
  41. -------------------------
  42.  
  43. Insert Diskette 1 into a drive.  In this example, the A drive is used.
  44.  
  45. Type the following at the OS/2 command prompt:
  46.  
  47.   A:\INSTALL <Press Enter>
  48.  
  49. Select CONTINUE to start the installation or Select EXIT to stop the
  50. installation.  Follow the on-screen prompts that guide you
  51. through the installation of the product and optional utilities.
  52.  
  53. BackMaster 3.01 will be installed in the directory path you specify or 
  54. in a default directory called "BACKMAST".  
  55.  
  56. The following directory hierarchy is created:
  57.  
  58. C: -- BACKMAST   Contains all of the necessary BackMaster
  59.      |                  program and help files, documents, and drivers.
  60.      |
  61.      +-- FSS          Contains sample File Selection Sets
  62.              
  63. Note: The install program will modify the OS/2 config.sys.  The
  64. original OS/2 config.sys will be backed up during the installation
  65. and modified to include device driver, LIBPATH, and PATH statements
  66. required by BackMaster.

  69. BackMaster 3.01 Features
  70. -----------------------
  71. This release of BackMaster for OS/2 includes the following features:
  72.  
  73.   - New Presentation Manager application icon objects for quick and
  74.     easy starting of BackMaster utilities and functions.
  75.  
  76.   - Drag & drop support for custom colors, text and bitmaps.
  77.  
  78.   - Icon Speedbar for common actions like backups, restores, etc.
  79.  
  80.   - Context-sensitive help on most objects and keywords and Icon
  81.     Speedbar Bubble Help Captions for all icon buttons.
  82.  
  83.   - Easy access to all configuration options via the Settings notebook
  84.     by choosing the Options|Configuration Settings menu commands
  85.     or by using the new Speedbar's configuration icon button.
  86.  
  87.   - New "Test" feature to detect installed tape drive devices.
  88.  
  89.   - New "Auto" speed feature for optimization, enhanced performance, 
  90.     and more reliability.
  91.  
  92.   - Updated "Create Disaster Recovery Diskettes" utility program
  93.     that includes support for all versions of OS/2 v2.1 or higher.

  95. Additional Command line parameters
  96. ----------------------------------
  97. The following command line options have been added:
  98.  
  99. Syntax: BACKMAST.EXE "/PARAMETER" (minus quotations)
  100.  
  101. /E  Command line parameter signals the BackMaster program to
  102.      " Eject " the current tape cartridge. (SCSI Interface only)
  103.  
  104. /T  Command line parameter signals the BackMaster program to
  105.      " Retention " the current tape cartridge.
  106.  
  107. /AUTO: Command line parameter signals the BackMaster program to
  108.           YES =  Enable auto overwrite of tapes used for this event.
  109.            NO =  Disable auto overwrite of tapes used in for this event
  110.                   preserving existing data still on the cartridge.
  111.  
  112. /INI:{file.ini}    Command line parameter signals the BackMaster
  113.                   program to load the specified configuration file and to
  114.                   use these files saved configurations for the current
  115.                   tape event.  This option allows you to configure and
  116.                   save specific backup and restore options, as well as
  117.                   quickly being able to load default settings for other tape
  118.                   drive.
  119.  
  120. Device Driver config.sys parameters
  121. ----------------------------------- 
  122. The tape device driver's (rev. 2.x) release with BackMaster 3.01 have been
  123. updated to auto detect settings that in previous releases required additional
  124. parameters. BackMaster 3.01 only has one valid driver parameter:
  125.  
  126. /M      Directs the OS/2 device manager to allocate a region of DMA
  127.          memory for the device driver during system boot.  This option can 
  128.          benefit both LOW memory (12 mb or less) and HIGH Performance 
  129.          Systems with 64 mb of memory that might experience DMA overrun 
  130.          errors.
  131.  
  132. NOTE: BackMaster 3.01 Will Disregard These Parameters:
  133.  
  134. /J1     Only valid for revisions 1.xxx to 1.231, used to enable high
  135.          speed DMA translations for 3020 tape devices at 2m speed.
  136.  
  137. /J2     Only valid for revisions 1.xxx to 1.231, used to force some
  138.          tape devices to rewind.
  139.  
  140. /S      Only valid for revisions 1.xxx to 1.231, used to enable single
  141.          byte DMA to resolve shoe shinning.

  143.  
  144. BackMaster 3.01 - Supported Tape Devices
  145. ---------------------------------------
  146. BackMaster 3.01 supports many of the new tape drives from the 
  147. leading suppliers, including, Aiwa, Exabyte, Hewlett-Packard, 
  148. Iomega, MicroSolutions, Pertec Memories, Seagate,  Sony, 
  149. Tandberg Data, and Tecmar Technologies. 
  150.  
  151. BackMaster 3.01 is the only OS/2 software supporting the Iomega 
  152. Ditto 2GB and the Sony StorStation 2GB tape drives. 
  153.  
  154. Other QIC floppy/parallel tape devices may also be fully 
  155. supported but not listed below, the device may not have not 
  156. been available for testing at the time this software was released.

  279. BackMaster 3.01 is installed complete with an extensive help facility.
  280. BackMaster features context-sensitive object-based help for most
  281. objects and dialogs used.  You can display bubble help for each icon 
  282. object on the Speedbar by holding the mouse cursor on the icon.

  284. Online help is always available.  You can get this help by:

  286. - Pressing the F1 key 
  287. - Clicking on a Help push button 
  288. - Clicking on the Help choice in a pop-up menu

  348.      distribution disk and also available from the program's "Product -
  349.      Information" menu option under "Help").

  351.   - Registered user's name or company name listed when the software
  352.     was registered.  If you have not mailed the registration card, it
  353.     may be requested that you fax a completed registration card
  354.     with proof of purchase before receiving free tech support.

  356.   - Tape drive brand and model.  Tape cartridge brand, model, and capacity.

  358.   - Computer make, model, and the make and model numbers of
