╚══════════════════╝
AHNENTAF is a program to make an ahnentafel from a PAF data base.
It differs from the PAF version of the ahnentafel by adding more
detail about each individual. The final result is similar to
ahentafels published in genealogical magazines.
The word "ahnentafel" comes from the German, "ahnen" meaning
ancestors and "tafel" meaning table. As used today, it refers to
a numbering system for the ancestors of a person. The starting
person is given the number 1. His/her father is 2, and his/her
mother is 3. Number 2's father is 4 and his mother is 5. Number
3's father is 6 and her mother is 7. Double any person's number
to get his/her father's number. Double any person's number and
add one to get his/her mother's number. After the first
generation, all the men have even numbers, and all the women have
odd numbers.
The information contained in an ahnentafel can be as short as a
name or as long as a paragraph. Because an ahnentafel is a list,
rather than a chart, it can be very compact. Many pages of
4-generation pedigrees can be printed on just a few pages in the
ahnentafel format.
The information provided in this version includes birth date and
place, death date and place, and marriage date and place. If
birth and death data are not available, baptism and burial data
are substituted if possible. The layout is designed for
ahnentafel numbers up to seven digits long. This allows for 23
generations as opposed to PAF's 32 generations.
