_________
_________
_________ 06 Conflict
___ ___
_________ (Sung)
___ ___
The Image: Sky and water come apart
cunning within strength
the dangerous behind the creative
The Elements: primal air above primal water, expanding
Astral Significance: Mercury conjunct Earth in the autumn and winter signs
of the zodiac
Ruling Planet: Jupiter
Principles, Characteristics, and Manifestations:
adversity, discord, disagreement, guile against force, contention,
controversy, quarrels, vendettas, feuds, battle, divergence,
dangerous strength, a strong and lasting rain, a river crossing,
combat between sublety and brute force
The hexagram Sung is usually titled 'Conflict' or 'Contention'. This
concept derives from the combination of cunning flexibility (water), within
firm strength (sky). Even the motion of the two trigrams are in conflict-
water seeks the lowest point while air strives upwards. In astral terms,
'Conflict' is the dark conjunction of Mercury and the Earth. This absence of
rational planning (Mercury) and a sense of honorable duty (Earth), in times
of over-all activity is sure to breed cross-purposes. Sung demands great
forethought and strict attention to immediate needs and responsibilities.
Social Implications: the strong encountering the devious
the middle sons protecting the father
mature men following the ruler
