Instructions for Color Laptop utility
version 1.0 (27 Oct 1992)
(c)1992 E. Meyer
A growing number of laptop computers now have color VGA LCD displays.
Although these laptop displays must be used in a variety of lighting
conditions, they lack the full range of contrast and brightness adjustments of
their desktop CRT counterparts. COLAP provides a substitute for a contrast
knob, by varying the intensity of the colors in the VGA palette under keyboard
control; it can also blank the screen.
While intended for color laptops, COLAP can also be used on monochrome
VGA laptops, or any other VGA-equipped system if desired. (It could also be
used to adjust the video output from a laptop to a projection device for
presentations.)
On Toshiba laptops, COLAP also provides keyboard control of the display
backlight and hard disk standby mode.
COMMAND LINE SYNTAX: COLAP {-63...+63} {OFF|ON} {/T}
KEYBOARD CONTROL: HotKey + arrow, Home, End, Del keys
(default HotKey is Right Shift)
INSTALLATION
COLAP installs itself in memory automatically the first time you run it.
If you specify any arguments (see below), they will take effect immediately.
"ON" and "0" are assumed by default. For example, the command
COLAP 8 /T
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT will install with adjustment +8 and special Toshiba
features enabled (see explanation of arguments below).
If you run COLAP again, it knows that it is already installed; it will
make any changes requested, then display its status.
While COLAP is installed and active, you can control it instantly via
several "HotKey" combinations; by default, they use the Right Shift key.
ADJUSTING DISPLAY CONTRAST
You can adjust the effective contrast of the display at any time simply
by holding down the HotKey and pressing the Up or Down arrow keys. The
contrast can vary in 127 increments, from effectively dark (-63) to extremely
bright (+63); the correct colors of the current palette are always maintained,
though bright colors may bleach out to white at high intensities.
To zero the contrast, restoring the original level (before COLAP was
installed), press the HotKey and the Left arrow key.
On non-Toshiba computers, you can also press the HotKey and the Right
arrow key to blank the screen instantly (contrast -63); press HotKey-Right
again to restore the display. On Toshibas, this feature controls the LCD
backlight instead; see below.
You can also type "COLAP nn" to set the contrast from the command line,
where "nn" is a number from +63 to -63, or 0 to zero again.
Note that COLAP distinguishes between the Right and Left Shift keys, and
acts only on the dedicated grey keys of the enhanced keyboard, not the keys of
the numeric keypad. If your application software requires Shift-arrow
keystrokes, you can use other combinations to form them, or change the HotKey.
RECALIBRATION
COLAP should not interfere with control of screen colors by normal
application software. However, any other programs that manipulate the VGA
adapter's DAC registers directly, instead of through VGA BIOS calls -- for
example, the palette utility VPT -- will confuse COLAP. If, after changing
colors with such a program, you try a COLAP adjustment, the screen will revert
to the previous colors!
As a solution, COLAP provides a recalibration feature for use with
programs that you've found to cause this confusion. Whenever such a program
has changed the screen colors, you need to press the HotKey and the Home key
to recalibrate COLAP. Then you should be able to adjust the contrast without
losing the new color settings.
TURNING OFF AND ON
If for any reason you need to turn off COLAP's features, you can press
the HotKey and the End key. The display is restored to its original state,
and all HotKey functions and command line adjustments are disabled;
essentially, COLAP behaves as if it isn't there.
The "COLAP OFF" command has the same effect, when entered from the
command line. The "COLAP ON" command is the only way to reactivate COLAP; the
previous adjustment is reinstated and all functions are reenabled.
BACKLIGHT AND HARD DISK CONTROL
(Toshiba only)
Toshiba laptop users can take advantage of two special features, enabled
by running COLAP with the "/T" option. The status message will state "Toshiba
selected", and the HotKey feature list will expand to include these. (If "/T"
is used again, the Toshiba support will be toggled back off.)
These features should work on all recent models with VGA display (T1800,
2000, 2200, 3300, 4400 series); do not try to use them on other computers.
They can be used either together with the built-in backlight and hard disk
timeout features, or instead of them.
Pressing the HotKey and the Right arrow key toggles the LCD backlight on
and off. This works whether or not AC power is connected, and can be useful
either for privacy or to save battery power. Backlighting does not resume at
the next keypress; you must toggle it back on by pressing HotKey-Right again.
You can also press the HotKey and the Del key to power down the hard disk
immediately, when you know that your software will not be accessing it for a
while. This can be useful either to make the computer quieter, or to save
battery power. The hard disk will power up again automatically whenever
needed.
ADVANCED NOTES
COLAP is a tiny memory resident utility (TSR), and remains installed
until you reboot; do not install it from within another program or shell. It
adjusts the VGA display colors with a technique published in PC Magazine
("DIMMER" utility, Oct. 1989). It uses code provided by Toshiba America to
control backlighting and hard disk standby on the models indicated.
COLAP.COM includes two default values that can be changed by the
knowledgable user with DEBUG or a similar utility, if needed:
HEX ADDRESS 0103 = C7 (multiplex ID for int 2F)
0104 = 01 (HotKey bitmap specification)
If COLAP conflicts with another TSR in your system, you can change the
multiplex ID to any other value from C0 to CF.
If you need or prefer to do so, you can change the HotKey that will
activate COLAP's keyboard controls. Possible values are:
01 = Right Shift (default) 04 = Ctrl
02 = Left Shift 08 = Alt
and also combinations of two or more keys obtained by adding these together,
such as 0C = Ctrl+Alt. Note that despite the status message, the new HotKey
will not take effect until you reboot and reinstall COLAP.
Do not install values other than indicated here. Please do not
distribute modified copies of COLAP.COM, which may confuse other users.
