  180.         1.0 Introduction
  181.         ================

  183.         The Mycroft Casino is a collection of popular betting games gathered
  184.         into a single BBS door program.  Games vary in difficulty from the
  185.         straight luck of High/Low to the complicated betting schemes of Craps.
  186.  
  187.         The game is designed primarily for enjoyment, but for those of you
  188.         unfamiliar with some of gamblings more intricate games, the program
  189.         can also serve as an instruction aide allowing you to learn the game,
  190.         the various bets, and to help you plan your own betting strategy.
  191.  
  192.         The Mycroft Casino will keep track of several statistics so that you
  193.         can see how you compare to others in the various games as well as
  194.         an overall gambler.  First is the Top 10 Gamblers.  This list is
  195.         updated every time someone exits the door.  It keeps track of the
  196.         top 10 cash holders.  Second is the Game High Scores.  This set
  197.         will keep track of the best overall gamming session (which is from
  198.         when you enter the door till you exit) as well as the best gamming
  199.         sessions for each of the gambling games.  Thirdly is your personal
  200.         scores.  Your best personal sessions are recorded so that you (and
  201.         only you, may see how you compare with other gamblers on the BBS.

  203.         The bulk of this manual is a detailed description of each of the
  204.         various commands.  Also supplied is a condensed version of the rules
  205.         of each game, the various bets allowed, and a description of how
  206.         the our game differs from those you will find in Monte Carlo, Las
  207.         Vegas, and Atlantic City.

  211.         Many hours of work have gone into this program over the years.  The
  212.         craps game alone has over 100K of source.  It is hoped you will
  213.         enjoy the program and perhaps someday it will help you make a fortune

  239.         2.0 System Requirements
  240.         =======================

  242.         To play Casino, you need a modem, a terminal or a personal computer
  243.         with terminal software, and ANSI or VT100 emulation.  The game
  244.         screens are painted on your display using the ANSI/VT100 cursor
  245.         positioning and other control sequences.
  246.  
  247.         Color is not required, but it is an option.  You will find that color
  248.         will greatly enhance your ability to read the informtion presented to
  249.         you on the screen.  The IBM character set is also an option.  Although
  250.         the game is primarily designed for IBM based machines, making the IBM
  251.         character set an option allows those with other computer types to
  252.         still enjoy the game.

  301.         The object of the game is straight and simple.  You are to beat
  302.         the odds and win at the various casino games.  You will find detailed
  303.         rules on each game later in this document.

  305.         You may also set your own objectives, such as being the best at
  306.         a particular game, or you may simply just play for the fun of it.

  309.         that you may review to see if you have met your own objectives.

  357.         4.0 Using the Menus
  358.         ===================
  359.  
  360.         You will interface to Casino through a series of ANSI based menus.
  361.         For the most part, you will be using your numeric keypad to accomplish
  362.         this task.  Since many terminal programs use the arrow keys as well as
  363.         keys such as PgUp and PgDn, Casino expects you to set your NumLock
  364.         toggle so that these keys transmit ASCII numeric characters instead
  365.         of the extended keycodes.  The following is a list of the keys used
  366.         in Casino menus:
  367.  
  368.             [7] [Home]      This key will move the menu cursor to the first
  369.                             menu entry.
  370.  
  371.             [1] [End]       This key will move the menu cursor to the last
  372.                             menu entry.
  373.  
  374.             [8] [Up]        The up arrow key will move the menu cursor to the
  375.                             previous menu entry (ie. up one line).
  376.  
  377.             [2] [Down]      The down arrow key will move the menu cursor to
  378.                             the next menu entry (ie. down one line).

  380.                 [ENTER]     The ENTER key will select/execute the current menu
  381.                             entry.

  383.                 [SPACE]     The SPACE bar will select/execute the current menu

  386.             [*] [REPAINT]   The * key may be used in any menu to cause the
  387.                             entire screen to be repainted.  This is meant to
  388.                             be used in the event the screen contents are
  389.                             corrupted due to line noise.

  391.             [?] [HELP]      The ? key may be used at any time to jump into
  392.                             the games online help system.  This manuel is
  393.                             effectively reproduced in the online help system.

  396.         Other keys may be assigned functions for certain menus.  These will
  397.         be described in the appropriate section of this documentation.  This

  475.         5.0 Main Menu Commands
  476.         ======================

  478.         The Main Menu is the hub of control to all of the game settings and
  479.         to entering the various betting games.  Here are the Main Menu commands
  480.         in detail:

  483.             5.1 Selecting a Game
  484.             --------------------
  485.             Beginning with version 3.01 there are now 8 gambling games to
  486.             choose from on the Main Menu.  To enter a game, move the menu
  487.             cursor to the game and press either [SPACE] or [ENTER].  The
  488.             current list of games is as follows:
  489.  
  490.                             1. High / Low
  491.                             2. Baccarat
  492.                             3. Draw Poker
  493.                             4. Keno
  494.                             5. Blackjack
  495.                             6. Horse Racing
  496.                             7. Craps

  502.             All of the games configuration options, access to documentation,
  503.             and access to game statistics are contained in the Options
  504.             Menu which is directly accessable from the Main Menu.  Slecting
  505.             Options will take you to this menu.  For details on the options,
  506.             see the chapter on the Options Menu later in this document.

  509.             5.3 Exit to BBS
  510.             ---------------
  511.             Selecting the Exit command will exit the Casino program and
  512.             return you back to the BBS or door monitor you called it from.
  513.             Before returning, you will be notified if you are listed among
  514.             the Top 10 Gamlers as well as if you have any of the highest
  515.             game sessions.

  534.         6.0 Options Selection Menu

  537.         The Options Selection Menu provides you access to all of the game
  538.         settings, to view or download the documentation, and to review all
  539.         of the various game statistics.

  542.             6.1 Review Docs
  543.             ---------------
  544.             This command will allow you to review the documentation while
  545.             staying online.  The documentation is displayed one screen at
  546.             a time.  At the end of each screen you are given the option to
  547.             abort, continue, or to run through the remainder of the docu-
  548.             mentation non-stop.

  550.  
  551.             6.2 Capture Docs
  552.             ----------------
  553.             This command will allow you to capture the documentation online.
  554.             Unlike the Review Docs command, this command will flow through
  555.             the documentation non-stop once it has been started.  You may
  556.             capture the documentation through your terminal program's
  557.             capture mode or you may do it via an ASCII download.  Once
  558.             started, the stream of documentation will respond to XON/XOFF
  559.             (Ctrl S/Ctrl Q) handshaking so as not to overflow your terminal
  560.             programs buffers.  The stream may also be aborted by pressing
  561.             [ESC].

  563.             6.3 Download Docs
  564.             -----------------
  565.             This command, if configured by the SysOp, will allow you to
  566.             download a compressed version of the documentation using a
  567.             popular file transfer protocol.  This is the best method of
  568.             obtaining the documentation if it is configured as it insures
  569.             a controlled transfer with error detection and recovery.

  572.             6.4 Message Delay Setting
  573.             -------------------------
  574.             This command allows you to control the flow of the game and is
  575.             one of the more innovative features of The Mycroft Casino.  You
  576.             will be taken to a sub-menu where you may select the message
  577.             delay setting you desire.

  580.             6.5 Graphics Setting
  581.             --------------------
  582.             This command will take you to the Graphics Setting sub-menu.
  583.             There you may change your graphics setting from the original
  584.             one you selected the first time you entered in the program.
  585.             The menu option is provided so that you may change your
  586.             setting whenever you like or have changed hardware and not
  587.

  598.             6.6 Language Setting

  600.             This command will take you to the Language Setting sub-menu.
  601.             If your SysOp has aquired additional language files, you will
  602.             be given the option to play The Mycroft Casino in a variety
  603.             of human languages.  If you are interested in playing Casino
  604.             in an another language, have your SysOp check with Mycroft
  605.             Systems on which languages are currently available.

  608.             6.7 View Top 10 Gamblers
  609.             ------------------------
  610.             This command will allow you to review the top 10 players in
  611.             The Mycroft Casino.  The top 10 are determined solely as those
  612.             players having the most cash.  The list you will see will be
  613.             up to date as of the time you entered the program.  Any changes
  614.             in your score will not be reflected until you exit the program.

  617.             6.8 View Best Game Scores
  618.             -------------------------
  619.             This command will allow you to view the top session scores for
  620.             each individual gambling game as well as an overall best
  621.             session score.  A session is defined as a single entrance
  622.             into the program.  For example, your current session started
  623.             when you entered the program and will end when you return to
  624.             the BBS.  A session has no set time period and makes no attempt
  625.             to adjust session scores based on the amount of time you have
  626.             played.  This is just a simple way of showing who has been
  627.             good enough (or fortunate enough) to make a killing in a single
  628.             session.

  631.             6.9 View Personal Bests
  632.             -----------------------
  633.             This command will alow you to compare your best scores to those
  634.             shown in the Best Game Scores display.  This way, you may
  635.             compete against yourself even if it seems impossible to reach
  636.             a high score attained by another.  Note that this information
  637.             is available only to you and others may only see your scores
  638.             if you are the highest.

  641.             6.10 Return to Main Menu
  642.             ------------------------
  643.             This command will simply return you back to the Main Menu
  644.             where you may select a game to play or you may exit back to
  645.             the BBS.

  655.         This menu gives you access to one of the nicer features of Casino.
  656.         From this menu you can select how long messages will be displayed
  657.         one the screen.  These messages, status and error messages, will
  658.         appear across the bottom portion of the screen.  The following is
  659.         a list of settings and their apx. time of delay.  The delay starts
  660.         after the last character of the message is transmitted.

  663.             7.1 Very Fast
  664.             -------------
  665.             This provides a delay of apx. 2.0 seconds.
  666.  
  667.  
  668.             7.2 Fast
  669.             --------
  670.             This provides a delay of apx. 3.5 seconds.

  673.             7.3 Moderate
  674.             ------------
  675.             This provides a delay of apx. 4.5 seconds.

  680.             This provides a delay of apx. 6.0 seconds.

  685.             This provides a delay of apx. 7.5 seconds.

  690.             Instead of providing a delay, this setting will wait for the
  691.             user to press the [Enter] key after the message is displayed
  692.             before it continues.  The symbol '...' is appended to the
  693.             message to indicate that it is waiting.  A timeout will
  694.             automatically take place if [Enter] is not pressed within
  695.             three minutes.

  697.             In some of the gambling games, this setting will also activate

  898.                 Baccarat is a straight game of chance.  The object of the
  899.                 game is to get your hand as close to 9 as possible.  The
  900.                 dealer and the player are each dealt 2 cards.  Depending on

  902.                 a third card.  Note that 10s and face cards count as 0, and
  903.                 that anything over a score of 10 has 10 subtracted from it.

  960.             Draw Poker is a very old game indeed.  In card houses around
  961.             the world, as well as in casinos that allow play, players
  962.             compete with each other with a percentage of the 'pot' going

  964.             but still remains a winner.

  966.             With the advent of computer games, Draw Poker entered the
  967.             casinos in a big way.  Electronic Poker machines allow the
  968.             better to play a hand by himself with winnings determined by

  1080.                   either 1 or 11), then the player wins a 'Blackjack' and

  1085.                   half of the player's bet.  If the player purchases
  1086.                   insurance and the dealer has a 'Blackjack' then the

  1088.                   insurance wager as well.  If the player buys insurance
  1089.                   and the dealer does not have a 'Blackjack' then the
  1090.                   player loses his insurance wager and play continues.
  1091.                   If the player has a 'Blackjack', then play ends and all
  1092.                   players not having bought insurance or having a 'Blackjack'
  1093.                   lose their wagers.

  1095.                 * Next each player in turn may make several play options.
  1096.                   First off, if the player has two identical cards, then
  1097.                   he may, but is not required to, 'split' his hand into
  1098.                   two hands.  This is done by flipping both cards face up
  1099.                   seperate from each other and placing an amount equal to
  1100.                   the original bet next to the second card.  If the cards
  1101.                   were both Aces, then the dealer will deal one card for
  1102.                   each hand, otherwise each hand is dealt an additional card
  1103.                   and the hands may continue to play.

  1105.                 * If the player desires, he may 'double down'.  This is done
  1106.                   by placing both cards face down on the table on top of
  1107.                   each other and placing an amount equal to the original
  1108.                   wager on top of the two cards.  The dealer then deals one
  1109.                   more card to the hand and that hand is frozen.

  1111.                 * If the player's hand is continued, he may 'hit' (take an
  1112.                   additional card) or 'stand'.  He may continue this until
  1113.                   he either 'stands', or he 'busts' (his total exceeds 21)

  1117.                   dealer turns up his down card and reveals his total.
  1118.                   The dealer's betting is then automatic.  He must draw

  1841.                 The Mycroft Casino version of craps has several differences
  1842.                 than the casino version.  The first and foremost is the
  1843.                 limitation of only a single chip per bet.  This was done
  1844.                 for logistics reasons as the screen would become a disaster
  1845.                 and the bookeeping on the bets a bigger one.  The game
  1846.                 does allow changing the chip value before any 'come-out'
  1847.                 roll.  The exception to the above is on the 'Buy Bets' and
  1848.                 the 'Lay Bets' which must always be made at $20 plus the
  1849.                 5% casino commission.  Although this will limit your betting
  1850.                 abilities, we feel that the game is still more than enjoya-
  1851.                 ble and can serve as an excellent tutor.

  1853.                 The second major difference is that not all bets are suppor-
  1854.                 ted.  Once again this was done for screen logistics problems.

  1904.             give the casino the exact same percentage advantage of 5.263%
  1905.             (as opposed to Craps with the casinos advantage being as low
  1906.             as 0.5% or as high as 16.666%).  Each diagram shows the chip
  1907.             displayed as an '*' character.

  2077.         Well let me start out by giving you the history of this game.  The
  2078.         original version of High/Low, Baccarat, Keno, and Draw Poker were
  2079.         built into the Stellar Quest game which I wrote between 1988 and
  2080.         1989.  At the suggestion of many SysOps, I made a cut of these
  2081.         betting games and packaged them together as The Mycroft Casino
  2082.         during the summer of 1989.
  2083.  
  2084.         Soon afterwards, the game displays and the graphics were enhanced
  2085.         to be clearer and more attractive.  Also the Horse Racing game was
  2086.         added.
  2087.  
  2088.         In April of 1992 (after several minor changes), the game was
  2089.         upgraded from version 2.14 to 3.01.  At this time many new features
  2090.         were added including the ability to download the documentation
  2091.         from inside the door, multi-lingual support, a complete online
  2092.         help system a several others.  Also at this time I decided to
  2093.         add full betting Craps and Roulette to the already existing 6
  2094.         games.  The process of upgrading from 2.14 to 3.01 took 2 months
  2095.         of hard work during "free' hours of the week.  The  combination of
  2096.         the two new games almost doubled the source code as both games are
  2097.         quite elaborate in the variety of bets they can support.  It was
  2098.         decided because of the amount of effort, that the two new games
  2099.         would only be included in 'registered' copies of the door.

  2103.         As for strategy, all I can say is that experimentation with the
  2104.         various betting schemes, a fair amount of luck, and perhaps a

  2199.         ACTUAL ODDS         This term, as referred to in this documentation
  2200.                             and in the program, refers to tha actual chance
  2201.                             that a given number will be rolled, spun, or a
  2202.                             particular card will be drawn.  For instance, in a
  2203.                             standard deck of 52 playing cards there is a 51
  2204.                             to 1 (1 in 52) chance of drawing the Ace of Spades.
  2205.  
  2206.         ANSI/VT100          ANSI and VT100 are two types of standards used in
  2207.                             display based communications.  Both of these
  2208.                             standards share many sequences in common and ei-
  2209.                             ther of these standards may be used when playing
  2210.                             Casino.  Make sure your terminal emulation mode is
  2211.                             set to one of these before attempting to play.
  2212.  
  2213.         ASCII               ASCII stands for the American Standard for
  2214.                             Communications Information Interchange.  As to
  2215.                             relating to this game, this encompases the standard
  2216.                             control characters as well as the standard
  2217.                             printable characters used in most display devices.

  2219.         BLACKJACK           A term in the game of Blackjack which refers to
  2220.                             a natural win.  This involves being dealt your
  2221.                             two initial cards and having their total add up
  2222.                             to 21.  This usually pays off at 3 to 2.

  2224.         BUST                A Blackjack term referring to a hand that adds
  2225.                             up to a total greater than 21.  This is a losing
  2226.                             hand.

  2228.         BUY BET             A craps term referring to a bet made on a specific
  2229.                             number that is payed off at actual odds.

  2231.         COME BETS           These are bets made at the same odds as pass bets
  2232.                             but made by a player after the come-out roll has

  2234.                             pass bets.

  2236.         COME-OUT            A craps term referring to a shooter's initial roll.
  2237.                             In this instance, a 7 or an 11 is an instant win-

  2270.         FREE ODDS           A backup bet made in craps behind a players
  2271.                             initial pass/don't pass bet.  This bet pays off
  2272.                             at actual odds with no commission paid to the

  2275.         GRAPHICS MODE       Your Graphics Mode controls the environment in
  2276.                             which Casino presents information on your
  2277.                             display. There are three graphic modes available
  2278.                             in the game.  ASCII mode provides you with the
  2279.                             standard ASCII character set.  IBM mode provides
  2280.                             you with the IBM extended character set.  COLOR
  2281.                             mode provides you with the IBM extended character
  2282.                             set and includes ANSI color sequences.  Regardless
  2283.                             of mode, players need to support ANSI/VT100
  2284.                             terminal emulation in order to play.

  2286.         HARD BET            In craps, a term referring to a bet on either
  2287.                             double twos, double threes, double fours, or
  2288.                             double fives.

  2290.         HIT                 A Blackjack term referring to a player requesting
  2291.                             an additional card.

  2293.         HOP BET             A craps term referring to a bet on a single roll
  2294.                             of the dice where the better calls the actual

  2299.         INSURANCE           A Blackjack term referring to a side bet when the

  2327.         PAYOFF ODDS         This term, as referred to in this document and
  2328.                             in gambling in general, refers to the ratio of
  2329.                             money bet to money paid out for winning the bet.
  2330.                             As an example, there is a 35 to 1 (or 1 in 35)
  2331.                             chance of rolling double sixes in craps.  The
  2332.                             actual odds are then 1 to 35.  However, the
  2333.                             casino will only pay 30 to 1.  The difference
  2334.                             between the payoff odds and the actual odds give
  2335.                             the casinos a guaranteed edge which allows them
  2336.                             to always make money despite some large payoffs.

  2338.         PASS                A craps term referring to a shooter who wins on
  2339.                             his 'come-out' roll.  Thus 3 straight passes
  2340.                             indicates that the shooter has successfully
  2341.                             rolled a 7 or an 11 on his last three consecu-
  2342.                             tive come-out rolls.

  2344.         PLACE               A horse racing term referring to a bet on a horse
  2345.                             where as the better wins if the horse comes in
  2346.                             1st or 2nd.

  2348.         PLACE BETS          A craps term referring to a bet either on or
  2349.                             against a particular number being rolled before
  2350.                             a 7.

  2352.         POINT               A craps term referring to the number the shooter
  2353.                             rolled on his come-out roll.  The shooter must
  2354.                             repeat this number before a 7 is rolled or he
  2355.                             loses.

  2357.         PUSH                A general gambling term referring to a tie where
  2358.                             no money exchanges hand on the bet.
