1.0 Introduction
================
The Mycroft Casino is a collection of popular betting games gathered
into a single BBS door program. Games vary in difficulty from the
straight luck of High/Low to the complicated betting schemes of Craps.
The game is designed primarily for enjoyment, but for those of you
unfamiliar with some of gamblings more intricate games, the program
can also serve as an instruction aide allowing you to learn the game,
the various bets, and to help you plan your own betting strategy.
The Mycroft Casino will keep track of several statistics so that you
can see how you compare to others in the various games as well as
an overall gambler. First is the Top 10 Gamblers. This list is
updated every time someone exits the door. It keeps track of the
top 10 cash holders. Second is the Game High Scores. This set
will keep track of the best overall gamming session (which is from
when you enter the door till you exit) as well as the best gamming
sessions for each of the gambling games. Thirdly is your personal
scores. Your best personal sessions are recorded so that you (and
only you, may see how you compare with other gamblers on the BBS.
The bulk of this manual is a detailed description of each of the
various commands. Also supplied is a condensed version of the rules
of each game, the various bets allowed, and a description of how
the our game differs from those you will find in Monte Carlo, Las
Vegas, and Atlantic City.
-----
Many hours of work have gone into this program over the years. The
craps game alone has over 100K of source. It is hoped you will
enjoy the program and perhaps someday it will help you make a fortune
off of one of the famous casinos around the world.
Acknowledgements
================
In both the development of the program and in the writing of this
document I have often referenced the following list of book(s) for
game rules, payoff odds, and betting principles. You may wish to
obtain copie(s) for yourself or go to your public library and review
the book(s) for yourself as they also cover many details about
betting strategies and how to play the casinos.

2.0 System Requirements
=======================
To play Casino, you need a modem, a terminal or a personal computer
with terminal software, and ANSI or VT100 emulation. The game
screens are painted on your display using the ANSI/VT100 cursor
positioning and other control sequences.
Color is not required, but it is an option. You will find that color
will greatly enhance your ability to read the informtion presented to
you on the screen. The IBM character set is also an option. Although
the game is primarily designed for IBM based machines, making the IBM
character set an option allows those with other computer types to
still enjoy the game.
Your display must support 80 columns and at least 24 lines.

3.0 Object of the Game
======================
The object of the game is straight and simple. You are to beat
the odds and win at the various casino games. You will find detailed
rules on each game later in this document.
You may also set your own objectives, such as being the best at
a particular game, or you may simply just play for the fun of it.
As mentioned in the introduction, there are three sets of statistics
that you may review to see if you have met your own objectives.
Good luck,

4.0 Using the Menus
===================
You will interface to Casino through a series of ANSI based menus.
For the most part, you will be using your numeric keypad to accomplish
this task. Since many terminal programs use the arrow keys as well as
keys such as PgUp and PgDn, Casino expects you to set your NumLock
toggle so that these keys transmit ASCII numeric characters instead
of the extended keycodes. The following is a list of the keys used
in Casino menus:
[7] [Home] This key will move the menu cursor to the first
menu entry.
[1] [End] This key will move the menu cursor to the last
menu entry.
[8] [Up] The up arrow key will move the menu cursor to the
previous menu entry (ie. up one line).
[2] [Down] The down arrow key will move the menu cursor to
the next menu entry (ie. down one line).
[ENTER] The ENTER key will select/execute the current menu
entry.
[SPACE] The SPACE bar will select/execute the current menu
entry.
[*] [REPAINT] The * key may be used in any menu to cause the
entire screen to be repainted. This is meant to
be used in the event the screen contents are
corrupted due to line noise.
[?] [HELP] The ? key may be used at any time to jump into
the games online help system. This manuel is
effectively reproduced in the online help system.
Other keys may be assigned functions for certain menus. These will
be described in the appropriate section of this documentation. This
keyboard chart is reproduced in appendix C.

5.0 Main Menu Commands
======================
The Main Menu is the hub of control to all of the game settings and
to entering the various betting games. Here are the Main Menu commands
in detail:
5.1 Selecting a Game
--------------------
Beginning with version 3.01 there are now 8 gambling games to
choose from on the Main Menu. To enter a game, move the menu
cursor to the game and press either [SPACE] or [ENTER]. The
current list of games is as follows:
1. High / Low
2. Baccarat
3. Draw Poker
4. Keno
5. Blackjack
6. Horse Racing
7. Craps
8. Roulette
5.2 Options
-----------
All of the games configuration options, access to documentation,
and access to game statistics are contained in the Options
Menu which is directly accessable from the Main Menu. Slecting
Options will take you to this menu. For details on the options,
see the chapter on the Options Menu later in this document.
5.3 Exit to BBS
---------------
Selecting the Exit command will exit the Casino program and
return you back to the BBS or door monitor you called it from.
Before returning, you will be notified if you are listed among
the Top 10 Gamlers as well as if you have any of the highest
game sessions.

6.0 Options Selection Menu
==========================
The Options Selection Menu provides you access to all of the game
settings, to view or download the documentation, and to review all
of the various game statistics.
6.1 Review Docs
---------------
This command will allow you to review the documentation while
staying online. The documentation is displayed one screen at
a time. At the end of each screen you are given the option to
abort, continue, or to run through the remainder of the docu-
mentation non-stop.
6.2 Capture Docs
----------------
This command will allow you to capture the documentation online.
Unlike the Review Docs command, this command will flow through
the documentation non-stop once it has been started. You may
capture the documentation through your terminal program's
capture mode or you may do it via an ASCII download. Once
started, the stream of documentation will respond to XON/XOFF
(Ctrl S/Ctrl Q) handshaking so as not to overflow your terminal
programs buffers. The stream may also be aborted by pressing
[ESC].
6.3 Download Docs
-----------------
This command, if configured by the SysOp, will allow you to
download a compressed version of the documentation using a
popular file transfer protocol. This is the best method of
obtaining the documentation if it is configured as it insures
a controlled transfer with error detection and recovery.
6.4 Message Delay Setting
-------------------------
This command allows you to control the flow of the game and is
one of the more innovative features of The Mycroft Casino. You
will be taken to a sub-menu where you may select the message
delay setting you desire.
6.5 Graphics Setting
--------------------
This command will take you to the Graphics Setting sub-menu.
There you may change your graphics setting from the original
one you selected the first time you entered in the program.
The menu option is provided so that you may change your
setting whenever you like or have changed hardware and not

have to specify your graphics preference each time you enter
the program.
6.6 Language Setting
--------------------
This command will take you to the Language Setting sub-menu.
If your SysOp has aquired additional language files, you will
be given the option to play The Mycroft Casino in a variety
of human languages. If you are interested in playing Casino
in an another language, have your SysOp check with Mycroft
Systems on which languages are currently available.
6.7 View Top 10 Gamblers
------------------------
This command will allow you to review the top 10 players in
The Mycroft Casino. The top 10 are determined solely as those
players having the most cash. The list you will see will be
up to date as of the time you entered the program. Any changes
in your score will not be reflected until you exit the program.
6.8 View Best Game Scores
-------------------------
This command will allow you to view the top session scores for
each individual gambling game as well as an overall best
session score. A session is defined as a single entrance
into the program. For example, your current session started
when you entered the program and will end when you return to
the BBS. A session has no set time period and makes no attempt
to adjust session scores based on the amount of time you have
played. This is just a simple way of showing who has been
good enough (or fortunate enough) to make a killing in a single
session.
6.9 View Personal Bests
-----------------------
This command will alow you to compare your best scores to those
shown in the Best Game Scores display. This way, you may
compete against yourself even if it seems impossible to reach
a high score attained by another. Note that this information
is available only to you and others may only see your scores
if you are the highest.
6.10 Return to Main Menu
------------------------
This command will simply return you back to the Main Menu
where you may select a game to play or you may exit back to
the BBS.

7.0 Message Delays Menu
=======================
This menu gives you access to one of the nicer features of Casino.
From this menu you can select how long messages will be displayed
one the screen. These messages, status and error messages, will
appear across the bottom portion of the screen. The following is
a list of settings and their apx. time of delay. The delay starts
after the last character of the message is transmitted.
7.1 Very Fast
-------------
This provides a delay of apx. 2.0 seconds.
7.2 Fast
--------
This provides a delay of apx. 3.5 seconds.
7.3 Moderate
------------
This provides a delay of apx. 4.5 seconds.
7.4 Slow
--------
This provides a delay of apx. 6.0 seconds.
7.5 Very Slow
-------------
This provides a delay of apx. 7.5 seconds.
7.6 Wait for ENTER
------------------
Instead of providing a delay, this setting will wait for the
user to press the [Enter] key after the message is displayed
before it continues. The symbol '...' is appended to the
message to indicate that it is waiting. A timeout will
automatically take place if [Enter] is not pressed within
three minutes.
In some of the gambling games, this setting will also activate
tutorial mode. In this mode, more information is displayed
as the game progresses which allows you a better opportunity
to learn the ins and outs of the game. See the chapters on
each individual game for more details.
After you have made your selection, a sample message will be
displayed in the error/status section of the screen.

8.0 Graphics Setting Menu
=========================
This menu will allow you to change your graphics setting to suit
your display hardware. Please note that ALL graphics formats
require the use of the following ANSI/VT100 emulation support:
* Clear screen & home cursor.
* Erase to end of line.
* Position cursor at Y, X location.
* Set standard character set.
* Set highlighted character set.
Note that if you are going to support color, you will also need the
support of the ANSI/VT100 emulation sequences for color.
8.1 ASCII Graphics
------------------
This graphics setting will present the user with a white on
black display. It also makes use of the standard and highlighted
character sets. Only the stadard ASCII characters in the range
of 20H through 7FH are used.
8.2 IBM Extended
----------------
This graphics setting will also present the user with a white
on black display. It does use the entire IBM character set,
00H through 7FH, and the extended character set 80H through
FFH. These are primarily the line and box characters as well
as the 4 card suit characters which make the display much more
easy to read.
8.3 IBM Color
-------------
This graphics setting makes use of the full 16 color range of
the IBM CGA Display Adaptor. It also uses the full range of
IMB standard and extended graphics characters. This will be
the setting of choice as despite being slightly slower, the
display is much more pleasing and easier to read.

9.0 Language Selection Menu
===========================
The Language Setting Menu is designed to allow users to play Casino
in whatever language is most suited to them. In most instances this
menu will only have 1 selection and will therefore do nothing.
SysOps in areas where multiple languages are common can aquire
additional language sets for this program. These are provided at
no cost other than the phone call to download the language set.
If you are interested in having a different language set available
to you, please contact your SysOp.
If the SysOp has setup the program with more than one language set,
then you will be presented with a menu of selections. The menu
may consist of more than one page. You will see the indicators
'...more...' at the top and/or bottom of the menu notifying you
that additional pages are available.

10.0 The Games
==============
This chapter will provide you with information on each of the games.
You will be presented with a description of the game, it's rules
of play and betting, and a description of how the game as provided
in The Mycroft Casino differs from what you would see in Las Vegas
or Atlantic City.
10.1 High/Low
-------------
High/Low is the simplest game provided in The Mycroft Casino.
Although not really a casino game, it is derived from the
popular game Acy/Deucy played in many card clubs across the
country. You may see the game presented as is here in some
of the electronic gambling machines.
Description
-----------
High/Low is a pure game of luck. You are presented with
three cards to chose from and must bet on whether the
card will be high (8-K) or low (A-6). A seven always
means a win for the house.
Rules of Play
-------------
Play is a simple as can be. Bet on either a high or a
low card, then select one of the three cards. The deck
consists of a single deck of cards and is reshuffled after
each play.
Rules of Betting
----------------
The betting is also quite simple. Select either to bet
high or bet low. Then you will be asked how much you
wish to bet. You may bet any amount of money between
$1 and $5000. The payoff odds are 1 to 1 while the actual
odds of winning are 6 to 13.
Differences
-----------
As mentioned, High/Low is not a casino game. It is just
a simple bet strickly based on chance.
10.2 Baccarat
-------------
Baccarat, also refered to as Chemin de Fer in some parts of the
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
world, is the game of the rich. It is usually set off in a room
by itself and away from the remainder of the casino. It is
a simple game of luck and widely unknown to most casino goers.
Due to the fact that most casinos set a $20 or $100 minimum bet
at their Baccarat tables, most casino goers shy away.
Rules of Play
-------------
Baccarat is a straight game of chance. The object of the
game is to get your hand as close to 9 as possible. The
dealer and the player are each dealt 2 cards. Depending on
the results of these cards, either or both of them may draw
a third card. Note that 10s and face cards count as 0, and
that anything over a score of 10 has 10 subtracted from it.
Thus is the player holds a 9 and a six his score is 5 and
not 15.
As mentioned, Baccarat is a game of straight chance. Neither
the house nor the player has any control over his hand. The
determination for drawing a third card is as follows.
* If either the house or the player has 8 or 9, known as
a natural, then the hand is over and the winner is the
hand closest to 9. If both hands are equal then it is
a draw and no money exchanges hand.
* If neither has a natural then play proceeds to the
players hand. If the player has 6 or 7, then the player
stands, otherwise the player draws a single card.
* Next, the play reverts to the house. If the house has
7 then the hand is over and the winner determined as
above. If the house holds a 6 and the player holds either
6 or 7, then the house draws a card. If the house holds
a 5 and the player holds 4, 5, 6, or 7, then the house
draws a card. If the house holds a 4 and the player holds
a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, then the house draws a card. If
the house holds a 3 and the player has any total except
for 8, then the house draws a card. The house always
draws a card when holding a 1 or 2.
Rules of Betting
----------------
Baccarat is one of the only casino games that allows you
to bet with the house. The rules of betting are straight
forward. You either bet on the house or bet on the
player. Bets on the player pay at 1 to 1 odds. Bets on
the house pay at 1 to 1 minus a 5% fee to the house.
Differences
-----------
There are only two differences between The Mycroft Casino
version and those versions played in casinos. First off,
The Mycroft Casino version always uses a single deck
whereas the versions at various casinos may use more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408)927-0105
Casino version 3.01 Page 14
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondly, The Mycroft Casino version has a minimum bet
of only $1 while most casinos start at a minimum of $20.
10.3 Draw Poker
---------------
Draw Poker is a very old game indeed. In card houses around
the world, as well as in casinos that allow play, players
compete with each other with a percentage of the 'pot' going
to the house. Therefore the house does not actively play,
but still remains a winner.
With the advent of computer games, Draw Poker entered the
casinos in a big way. Electronic Poker machines allow the
better to play a hand by himself with winnings determined by
the final hand the player holds.
Rules of Play
-------------
For each hand, the game uses a single deck of cards and
shuffles the deck before each hand. The player is dealt
5 cards which he must attempt to build into one of the
winning hand combinations. After the hand is dealt, the
player may hold any or all of the 5 cards. Next, the
player selects the deal button and replacements are dealt
for the cards the player chose not to keep. At that point
the hand is over and winnings are paid to the player based
on the results of his hand.
Rules of Betting
----------------
In video poker, all bets are made prior to the cards being
dealt. No raises are permitted. The payoffs are as follows:
* A pair of jacks or better pays 1 to 1.
* Two pair pays 2 to 1.
* Three of a kind pays 3 to 1.
* A straight (5 cards in numeric sequence) pays 5 to 1.
* A flush (5 cards of the same suit) pays 8 to 1.
* Full House (a pair + 3 of a kind) pays 10 to 1.
* Four of a kind pays 50 to 1.
* A straight flush (combined straight & flush) pays 100 to 1.
* A royal flush (10 through A of same suit) pays 500 to 1.
Differences
-----------
The only difference between the Mycroft Casino version and
the regular casino versions of video poker are that in the
casinos the machine will normally accept between $1 and $5

while as in The Mycroft Casino version as much as $50 can
be bet on a single hand. You may also find that some
casinos vary the payout odd or do not pay on Jacks or
Better.
10.4 Keno
---------
Keno is another of the very simple casino games with a minimum
number of rules to play the basic game. The game is much like
playing a lottory. The player picks the numbers that he or she
thinks will be drawn and then numbers are drawn. The player is
payed off based on the number of matches they have made.
Rules of Play
-------------
All bets are made prior to the beginning of the game. The
player selects the numbers he/she wishes to play and pays
the bet. The numbers are in the range of 1 to 80. 20
numbered balls are drawn at random and then players are
payed according to results.
Rules of Betting
----------------
In most casinos, the player may select between 3 and 15
numbers. Payoffs are based on the percentage of numbers
the player guessed correctly and the total number of
numbers the player selected. Bets may usually vary from
$1 to $10 or $20.
More complicated betting schemes are also available to the
player where he may play corners, top and bottom halves,
etc. These schemes are less likely to win and pay at
higher odds.
Differences
-----------
The Mycroft Casino version only permits the simple betting
scheme and only allows the player to bet $5 and to select
six numbers.
10.5 Blackjack
--------------
Blackjack is another very old card game. It dates back to the
late 1800 and originated in France. It evolved from other
games (like Baccarat) that revolved around the attempt to
reach a certain number. Blackjack is probably the most widely
played table game in casinos world wide.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408)927-0105
Casino version 3.01 Page 16
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rules of Play
-------------
The object of Blackjack is to be closer to 21 than the
dealer. Play starts by all players making their bets.
Once made each player is dealt two cards face down and
the dealer is dealt one card face down and one face up.
* If the players original two cards total 21 (aces may be
either 1 or 11), then the player wins a 'Blackjack' and
is paid immediately.
* If the dealer's face up card is an 'A' then players
are given the option to buy insurance. Insurance costs
half of the player's bet. If the player purchases
insurance and the dealer has a 'Blackjack' then the
player does not lose his original wager and keeps the
insurance wager as well. If the player buys insurance
and the dealer does not have a 'Blackjack' then the
player loses his insurance wager and play continues.
If the player has a 'Blackjack', then play ends and all
players not having bought insurance or having a 'Blackjack'
lose their wagers.
* Next each player in turn may make several play options.
First off, if the player has two identical cards, then
he may, but is not required to, 'split' his hand into
two hands. This is done by flipping both cards face up
seperate from each other and placing an amount equal to
the original bet next to the second card. If the cards
were both Aces, then the dealer will deal one card for
each hand, otherwise each hand is dealt an additional card
and the hands may continue to play.
* If the player desires, he may 'double down'. This is done
by placing both cards face down on the table on top of
each other and placing an amount equal to the original
wager on top of the two cards. The dealer then deals one
more card to the hand and that hand is frozen.
* If the player's hand is continued, he may 'hit' (take an
additional card) or 'stand'. He may continue this until
he either 'stands', or he 'busts' (his total exceeds 21)
and therefore loses.
* After all the players have finished their play, the
dealer turns up his down card and reveals his total.
The dealer's betting is then automatic. He must draw
cards until his total is 17 or higher or until he 'busts'.
In most casinos the dealer must also draw on what is
called a 'soft 17'. A soft 17 is a hand that adds up
to 17 and where one card is an A that is counted as an
11.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Players are then paid as follows.
* Players with a 'Blackjack' are paid 3 to 2.
* Players with a total higher than the dealers are
paid 1 to 1.
* Players with a total equal to the dealer's are said
to 'Push' and no money exchanges hand.
Differences
-----------
There are several main differences in the betting and play
of The Mycroft Casinos version of Blackjack. First off,
The Mycroft Casino version uses a single deck of cards
and reshuffles only when their are less than 10 cards
remaining in the deck. Most Casinos use two to four decks
(except on the more expensive tables where some casinos
offer the single deck variety).
Secondly, The Mycroft Casino does not support any 'splitting'
of the player's hand.
Thirdly, and in tune with some electronic video version of
Blackjack, The Mycroft Casino only allows a player to
'double down' if the player has a total of 10 or 11.
Lastly, and due to visual space restrictions, The Mycroft
Casino supports a '5 Card Charlie' rule. Under this rule,
if the player manages a total of 21 or less in 5 cards,
then the player automatically wins.
10.6 Horse Racing
-----------------
The betting on horse races is one of the oldest forms of
betting around. It dates back to time of the Romans and
Greeks and probably earlier. Almost every major casino has
what is known as 'off track betting'. Off track betting allows
a better to wager on a horse without being physically at the
race track. Instead, the race is transmitted by sattellite
to the casino.
Rules of Play
-------------
The rules of play are very straight forward. All the horses
start the race at the same time and the first one to cross
the finish line is the winner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408)927-0105
Casino version 3.01 Page 18
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rules of Betting
----------------
The basic system of betting is quite straight forward.
First, the casino establishes the beginning payoff odds
for each horse based on the horse's prior racing record.
There after, as bets are received on the various horses,
the odds are adjusted to maintain the casinos margin.
In basic betting you may bet a horse to win, place or
show. A horse wins if he ends the race in first place.
A win bet pays off at the indicated odds. A place bet
is a bet that the horse will either win the race or
come in second place. This bet pays off at slightly less
odds. A show bet is a bet the horse will either win the
race or come in second or third. This bet pays at an even
more reduced rate.
Most tracks and off track betting establishments also have
bets called 'The Daily Double' or 'Exacta' races. These
are bets on multiple races at the same time and pay off at
extremely high odds (usually based on the amount of bets
received where all winners split the total prize money).
Differences
-----------
Horse racing in The Mycroft Casino is a very simplified
version of off track betting. There is no support for any
multi race betting such as the 'Daily Double' or 'Exactas'.
Furthermore, players may only bet to win and not to place
or show.
The odds shown in The Mycroft Casino are based strictly
on the individual horse's chance to win.
10.7 Craps (Not available in Shareware version)
-----------------------------------------------
Craps and other dice games date back as far as man's recorded
history. It is one of the fastest and most exciting games
available in the casino. It also has one of the most complex
array of possible betting options.
Rules of Play
-------------
The rules of play are actually quite simple. The 'shooter'
starts off play by making either a 'pass' or 'don't pass'
bet. Next he rolls the dice for what is known as a 'come-
out' roll. The following results apply to the 'come-out'
roll:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408)927-0105
Casino version 3.01 Page 19
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* If the 'shooter' rolls a 7 or an 11, he is said to
have rolled a natural. All players betting the 'pass'
line win and the player is said to have made a 'pass'.
Bets are placed again and the 'shooter' is ready
to make another 'come-out' roll.
* If the 'shooter' rolls a 2, 3, or 12, he has rolled
'craps' and is said to have missed. All players betting
the 'don't pass' line win, while those betting the 'pass'
line lose. The 'shooter' does not relinquish the dice.
Bets are placed again and the 'shooter' is ready for
another 'come-out' roll.
* If the 'shooter' rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 that
number becomes the 'shooters' 'point'. From that time
on, the 'shooter' continues to roll until he rolls his
'point' again, in which case the 'pass' line betters
win and the 'don't pass' line betters lose and bets
are placed again and the 'shooter' is once again ready
to 'come-out'; or he rolls a 7, known as a looser, and
those betting the 'pass' line lose while those betting
the 'don't pass' line win, and the 'shooter' then
relinquishes the dice to the next player who is then
ready to make his 'come-out' roll.
Rules of Betting
----------------
As mentioned, Craps has one of the most complex betting
schemes in the casino. Aside from the 'pass' and 'don't
pass' bets mentioned above, there are a miriad of other
side bets players may make during the course of the game.
The 'pass' and 'don't pass' bets are the simplest bets
and are explained below:
* 'Pass' line bets are bets where the player is betting
that the 'shooter' will either roll 'a natural' on his
'come-out' roll or will make his 'point' if he fails
to make 'a natural'. This bet is one of the best bets
in the casino with actual odds of winning 251 to 244,
or almost 1 to 1. The 'pass' line bet pays at 1 to 1.
'Pass' line bets may only be made before the 'shooter'
rolls his 'come-out' roll. Once the bet is made, the
bet may not be picked up until it has either won or
lost.
* 'Don't Pass' line bets are bets where the player is
betting that the 'shooter' will either roll 'craps' 2
or 3 on his 'come-out' roll or will fail to make his
'point' afterwards. This bet is also one of the best
bets in the casino with actual odds being 976 to 949,
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408)927-0105

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
or once again, 1 to 1. A 'come-out' roll of 'craps'
12 is a standoff and no money exchanges hands. Once
this bet is made, it may not be removed until it has
either won, lost, or tied (a roll of 12 on the come-out
roll). The bet pays off at 1 to 1.
'Come' and 'Don't Come' are side bets that are very similar
to the 'Pass' and 'Don't Pass' bets. These bets may not
be placed on the 'come-out' roll (as they would then be
identical to the 'Pass' and 'Don't Pass' bets). Here is
a description of the bets:
* The 'Come' bet is made on any roll after the 'come-out'
roll. The bet is made by placing chips on the 'Come'
line. As with the 'Pass' bet, a win is instantly paid
if the next roll is a 7 or an 11. Likewise, it is
an instant loser if the next roll is a 2, 3, or 12.
If neither of these occur, the bet is moved up to the
place bets area where it is asigned it's own 'point'.
Likewise the bet will then win on making the 'point'
or lose on a roll of 7. Once moved up to the place
bets area, all rolls are treated as regular rolls
whether or not the 'shooter' is making a 'come-out'
roll. As with 'Pass' bets, the bet may not be taken
down until it wins or loses. The bet has the same
odds and payoff as the 'Pass' bet.
* 'Don't Come' bets are likewise similar to 'Don't Pass'
bets. They win initially on rolls of 2 or 3, lose
initially on rolls of 7 or 11, and are push bets on
a roll of 12. Likewise, after the next roll, if none
of the above conditions are met it is also moved up to
the place bets area where it has it's own 'don't point'.
Again, the bet may not be picked up once the dice are
rolled until it either wins or loses or ends in a push.
The bet has the same odds and payoff as the 'Don't Pass'
bet.
Many 'side bets' are allowed to be made on any roll of the
dice. Some of these bets on a single roll of the dice
where they either instantly win or instantly lose. These
are discussed below:
* The 'Field' bet is made by placing chips in the area of
the table marked the field. This bet is a single roll
bet and either pays off or loses after the dice are
rolled. A roll of 2 or 12 pays off at 2 to 1, while a
roll of 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11 pays 1 to 1.
* The 'Any Seven' bet is made by tossing your chips to the
box man and calling out 'any seven'. Your chips are
placed in the 'Any Seven' box on the board. If the next
roll is a 7 you are a winner, if not you are a loser.
The actual odds on this bet are 5 to 1 and the payoff

odds are 4 to 1.
* The 'Horn High 11' bet is made by tossing your chips to
the box man and calling out '11', 'horn high 11' or
'on the yo'. Your chips are placed in the 'Horn High 11'
box on the board. If the next roll is an 11 you are a
winner, if not you are a loser. The actual odds on this
bet are 17 to 1 and the payoff odds are 15 to 1.
* The 'Horn Low 3' bet is made by tossing your chips to
the box man and calling out '3' or 'horn low 3'. Your
chips are then placed in the 'Horn Low 3' box. If the
next roll is a 3 then you are a winner, if not you are
a loser. The actual odds on this bet are 17 to 1 and
the payoff odds are 15 to 1.
* The 'Horn High 12' bet is made by tossing your chips to
the box man and calling out 'horn high 12', '12' or
'box cars'. Your bet is placed in the 'Horn High 12'
box on the table. If the next roll is a 12 you are a
winner, otherwise you are a loser. The actual odds on
this bet are 35 to 1 while payoff odds are 30 to 1.
* The 'Horn Low 2' bet is made by tossing your chips to
the box man and calling out 'horn low 2', '2', or
'snake eyes'. Your chips are placed inside the 'Horn
Low 2' box on the table. If the next roll is a 2 you
are a winner, otherwise you are a loser. The actual odds
on this bet are 35 to 1 while the payoff odds are 30 to 1.
* The 'Around the Horn' bet is made by betting on all 4 of
the horn bets simultaneously. Since you must bet a
minimum of 4 times the regular bet, this is the same as
making the above four bets all in one call. Note that
you are guaranteed to lose 3 out of 4 of the bets.
* The 'Any Craps' bet is made by tossing your chips to the
box man and calling out 'any craps'. If the next roll
is a 2, 3, or 12 then you are a winner, otherwise you
are a loser. The actual odds for this bet are 8 to 1
while the payoff odds are 7 to 1.
* A 'Whirl' consists of making 5 of the six proposition
bets simultaneously. It is the same as making the 5
bets 'Any Seven' along with the four 'Horn' bets and
5 times the mimimum bet is required.
* A 'Hop' bet is made by tossing your chips to the box
man and calling out 'hop on ...' where you name the
exact combination of dice for the next roll. Your
chips are placed by the chip man who remembers the bet.
The fifteen two number rolls are paid off at 15 to 1,

while the six pair rolls are paid off at 30 to 1. Very
few casinos offer this bet since there is no place
on the table to support it.
'Hardway' bets may be placed at any time. Once made they
may also be picked up after any roll as well. These 4
bets cover the 4 pairs of numbers making up the 4, 6, 8,
and 10 rolls. The bets remain active through all rolls
until they lose or are taken down. The four bets are
explained below:
* The 'Hard 6' bet is made by placing your chips on the
table and calling out 'hard 6' to the stickman. He then
places your chips in the 'Hard 6' box on the board. You
may take down your bet after any roll. The actual odds
of this bet are 10 to 1 while the payoff odds are 9 to 1.
Your bet loses on any roll of 7 or a roll of 6 not made
the hard way.
* The 'Hard 8' bet is made by placing your chips on the
table and calling out 'hard 8' to the stickman. He then
places your chips in the 'Hard 8' box on the board. You
may take down your bet after any roll. The actual odds
of this bet are 10 to 1 while the payoff odds are 9 to 1.
Your bet loses on a roll of 7 or a roll of 8 not made
the hard way.
* The 'Hard 4' bet is made by placing your chips on the
table and calling out 'Hard 4' to the stickman. He then
places your chips in the 'Hard 4' box on the table. You
may take down your bet after any roll. The actual odds
of this bet are 8 to 1 while payoff odds are 7 to 1.
Your bet loses on a roll of 7 or a roll of 4 not made
the hard way.
* The 'Hard 10' bet is made by placing your chips on the
table and calling out 'Hard 10' to the stickman. He then
places your chips in the 'Hard 10' box on the table. You
may take your bet down after any roll. The actual odds
of this bet are 8 to 1 while the payoff odds are 7 to 1.
Your bet loses on a roll of 7 or a roll of 10 not made
the hard way.
Big Number bets are no longer available in Atlantic City,
but are still available in other casinos around the world.
The big number bets are explained below:

You win on any roll of 6 and you lose on any roll of 7.
Place bets are bets on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10,
and may be made at any time. These bets payoff everytime
the number is rolled and lose on any roll of 7. Most
casinos will 'take down' your place bets for you on 'come-
out' rolls and will then re-activate them after the 'come-
out' roll is completed. The following is a description
of the odds for each 'place' bet.
* A 'Place 4' bet is made by tossing your chips to the
dealer and calling out 'Place the 4'. He then places
your chips in the 'Place' area near the 4. The bet
may be taken down after any roll. The actual odds on
this bet are 2 to 1 while the payoff odds are 9 to 5.
Note that a the casino rounds off payoff in their
favor.
The bet pays on any roll of 4 and loses on any roll of 7.
* A 'Place 5' bet is made by tossing your chips to the
dealer and calling out 'Place the 5'. He then places
your chips in the 'Place' area near the 5. The bet
may be taken down after any roll. The actual odds on
this bet are 3 to 2 while the payoff odds are 7 to 5.
Note that a the casino rounds off payoff in their

The bet pays on any roll of 5 and loses on any roll of 7.
* A 'Place 6' bet is made by tossing your chips to the
dealer and calling out 'Place the 6'. He then places
your chips in the 'Place' area near the 6. The bet
may be taken down after any roll. The actual odds on
this bet are 6 to 5 while the payoff odds are 6 to 7.

this bet are 2 to 1 while the payoff odds are 9 to 5.
Note that a the casino rounds off payoff in their
favor.
The bet pays on any roll of 10 and loses on any roll of 7.
* The '$32 Across' bet is made by placing $32 in chips on
the table and calling out '32 across' to the dealer. He
then takes your chips and places them as follows on all
of the place bets:
$5 on 4
$5 on 5
$6 on 6
$6 on 8
$5 on 9
$5 on 10
Once placed, these are treated as regular place bets.
Also note, that $32 is a standard bet, but other values
such as $15, $18, $21, etc are also taken. The advantage
in the '$32 Across' bet is that it bets the optimum bets
(for roundoff purposes) on each of the place bets.
'Place to Lose' bets are identical to 'Place Bets' except
that they work backwards. In this instance, you are betting
a 7 will come up before the particular number is rolled.
The 6 'Don't Place' bets are explained below:

places your chips in the 'Place' area near the 6. The bet
may be taken down after any roll. The actual odds on
this bet are 6 to 5 while the payoff odds are 5 to 4.
Note that a the casino rounds off payoff in their
favor.
The bet pays on any roll of 7 and loses on any roll of 6.
* A 'Place to lose 8' bet is made by tossing your chips to
the dealer and calling out 'place the 8 to lose'. He then
places your chips in the 'Place' area near the 8. The bet
may be taken down after any roll. The actual odds on
this bet are 6 to 5 while the payoff odds are 5 to 4.

places your chips in the 'Place' area near the 10. The bet

'Buy Bets' are very similar to 'Place Bets' in that both
bets are betting the number will come up before the number
7 is rolled. The difference lies in the way the bet is made
and the payoff for winning. Like 'Place Bets', the casino
will take down and replace your bets for you during 'come-
out' rolls. The following is a description of the 6 'Buy
Bets':
* A 'Buy 4' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of that amount and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 4'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 2 to 1,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 4 and loses an a roll of 7.
* A 'Buy 5' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of that amount and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 5'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 3 to 2,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 5 and loses an a roll of 7.
* A 'Buy 6' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of that amount and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 6'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 6 to 5,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 6 and loses an a roll of 7.
* A 'Buy 8' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of that amount and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 8'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 6 to 5,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 8 and loses an a roll of 7.

* A 'Buy 9' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of that amount and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 9'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 3 to 2,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 9 and loses an a roll of 7.
* A 'Buy 10' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples there-
of) on the table along with 5% of that amount and announ-
cing to the dealer that you want to 'Buy on the 10'. The
bet (and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 2 to 1,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 10 and loses an a roll of 7.
'Lay Bets' are the exact opposite from the 'Buy Bets'. In
these bets you are once again betting a 7 will come up
before the number is rolled. Like the 'Buy Bets', the bet
is paid off at true odds minus 5%, only in this case it is
5% of the payoff. These bets must also be made in multiples
of $20 (plus commissions) and are also taken down for you
during 'come-out' rolls. The following is a description of
the 6 different 'Lay Bets':
* A 'Lay 4' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of the payoff and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Lay on the 4'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 2 to 1,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 7 and loses an a roll of 4.
* A 'Lay 5' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of the payoff and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Lay on the 5'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 3 to 2,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 7 and loses an a roll of 5.
* A 'Lay 6' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)
on the table along with 5% of the payoff and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Lay on the 6'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 6 to 5,
minus the 5% casino commission.

* A 'Lay 8' bet is made by placing $20 (or multiples thereof)

to the dealer that you want to 'Lay on the 8'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 6 to 5,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 7 and loses an a roll of 8.

of) on the table along with 5% of the payoff and announcing
to the dealer that you want to 'Lay on the 10'. The bet
(and the 5% casino commission) may be taken down after
any roll. The bet pays off at the actual odds of 2 to 1,
minus the 5% casino commission.
This bet wins on a roll of 7 and loses an a roll of 10.
'Free Odds' and 'Maximum Free Odds' bets are special types
of 'backup' bets. If you have already made a bet on the
'Pass' line, the 'Don't Pass' line, a 'Come' bet or a 'Don't
Come' bet, then you may make this wager. They are called
'free' because the house pays true odds on these bets. As
mentioned, they may only be made if you already have an
outstanding 'Pass/Come' bet.
The bets are placed by backing up your original bet and
calling out to the dealer 'taking the odds'. These bets
payoff at the true odds as follows:
2 to 1 on the number 4
3 to 2 on the number 5
6 to 5 on the number 6
6 to 5 on the number 8
3 to 2 on the number 9
2 to 1 on the number 10

Differences
-----------
The Mycroft Casino version of craps has several differences
than the casino version. The first and foremost is the
limitation of only a single chip per bet. This was done
for logistics reasons as the screen would become a disaster
and the bookeeping on the bets a bigger one. The game
does allow changing the chip value before any 'come-out'
roll. The exception to the above is on the 'Buy Bets' and
the 'Lay Bets' which must always be made at $20 plus the
5% casino commission. Although this will limit your betting
abilities, we feel that the game is still more than enjoya-
ble and can serve as an excellent tutor.
The second major difference is that not all bets are suppor-
ted. Once again this was done for screen logistics problems.
The following bets are not supported:
* Around the Horn. (Except that it may be implemented by
making all 4 individual bets on the 2, 3, 11, and 12).
* Whirl Bet. (Except that it may be implemented by making
all five bets on Any 7, 2, 3, 11, and 12).
* Hop Bets.
* Free Odds bets.
* Maximum Free Odds bets.
Tutor Mode
----------
For those who are just learning Craps, a special 'tutor'
mode has been implemented. This mode is set by setting
your message delay setting to 'Wait for [ENTER]'. When
set, each winning bet will be announced as it is paid off.
You will also note, tutor mode or not, that all losing
bets will turn black. They will remain this way until you
select either a roll or place bet command. This is done
also as a method of helping you understand the game.
Lastly, the 'Place' bets, 'Place to Lose' bets, 'Buy Bets',
and 'Lay Bets' will all turn dim after a point has been
made. This is to notify you that the casino has taken
these bets down for the 'come-out' roll. They will auto-
matically re-activate after the 'come-out' roll has been
completed, or you may activate them yourself and have them
be in play for the 'come-out' roll.

10.8 Roulette
-------------
Roulette is another casino table game that many betters find
mysterious. As it turns out, it is an extremely simple game
to play and that all you need learn is the payoff odds. The
casinos have the payoff odds calculated such that all bets
give the casino the exact same percentage advantage of 5.263%
(as opposed to Craps with the casinos advantage being as low
as 0.5% or as high as 16.666%). Each diagram shows the chip
displayed as an '*' character.
Rules of Play
-------------
Before the each spin of the wheel all bets are placed. The
ball is then spun in the opposite direction of the wheel.
When the ball comes to rest in one of the numbered sections
then those with bets on that number are paid.
Rules of Betting
----------------
Bets may be placed or taken down after any spin of the wheel.
The following is a description of each of the types of bets,
their actual and payoff odds, and a small diagram showing
where the bets are placed on the table:
* 1 Number Bets. These bets, as im- +--------+
plied, are a bet that a single number | |
will turn up on the next spin of the | 21 |
wheel. The actual odds are 37 to 1 | * |
while the payoff odds are 35 to 1. +--------+
* 2 Number Bets. These bets are bets | 21 | ----+-----
placed simultaneously on 2 numbers. | | |
If either number comes up, the player +----*---+ 3 * 6
wins. The actual odds are 36 to 2 | | |
while the payoff odds are 17 to 1. | 20 | ----+-----
* 3 Number Bets. These bets are bets +--------+
placed simultaneously on 3 numbers. | |
If any one of the three comes up, the | 19 |
player wins. The bets are placed at | |
the bottom of the numbered area of +====*===+
the table along the double lines. The actual odds are
35 to 3 while the payoff odds are 11 to 1.
* 4 Number Bets. These bets are bets 3 | 6
placed simultaneously on 4 numbers. |

any of the 5 numbers come up.
* 6 Number Bets. These bets are bets ----+-----
placed simultaneously on 6 numbers. |
If any one of the six comes up, the 19 | 22
player wins. The bets are placed at |
the bottom of the numbered area of ====*=====
the table along the double lines. The actual odds are
32 to 6 while the payoff odds are 5 to 1.
* Column Bets. These bets are bets -----+--------+
placed simultaneously on all of the | |
numbers of one of the 3 columns. If 35 | 2 to 1 |
any of the numbers along the column | * |
comes up, then the player wins. The -----+--------+
actual odds are 26 to 12 while the payoff odds are 2 to 1.
* Dozens Bets. These bets are bets ----+--------+---
placed simultaneously on either the *
1st, 2nd, or 3rd dozen sets of num- 1st 12
bers. The actual odds are 26 to 12
while the payoff odds are 2 to 1. ---------+-------
* High or Low. These bets are bets +--------+
placed simultaneously on either the | * |
1st or last set of 18 numbers. If |19 to 36|
any of the numbers comes up the player | |
wins. The actual odds are 20 to 18 +--------+
while the payoff odds are 1 to 1.
* Even or Odd. These bets are bets +--------+
placed simultaneously on either all | * |
the even or all the odd 18 numbers. | EVEN |
If any of the numbers comes up the | |
player wins. The actual odds are +--------+

the red or all the black 18 numbers. | BLACK |
If any of the numbers comes up the | |
player wins. The actual odds are +--------+

* Surrender. While not an actual bet, the State of New
Jersey requires all casinos to employ this rule which
states that if 0 to 00 comes up, all bets of 1 to 18,

19 to 36, EVEN, ODD, RED, or BLACK, pay the casino 1/2
of the amount bet while taking back the other half.
Differences
-----------
The only actual difference between The Mycroft Casino version
and the version found in most casinos is the limitation on
betting. This was implemented due to logistics as the
display would become cluttered and hard to follow. Therefore
bets are limited to a single chip per betting position. The
value of the chips may be changed before any spin.
This version does not implement the 'Surrender' rule since
it is only limited to the casinos in New Jersy.
Tutor Mode
----------
To help you get aquainted with the various bets in Roulette,
a special 'tutor' mode has been added. This mode is activa-
ted by setting your message delay setting to 'Wait for
[ENTER]. When 'tutor' mode is active, a message describing
each winning bet will be displayed after the wheel is spun.
Along with 'tutor' mode, The Mycroft Casino also turns all
losing bets black to show you which bets lost. The chips
will stay black until you spin again or make new bets.
Also added to Roulette is an extended help mode. While
moving the betting cursor around the screen, you may press
the '?' key and a single help line will be displayed at
the bottom of the screen. It will describe the numbers
being bet on as well as the payoff odds for the bet
location.

11.0 Authors Notes
==================
Well let me start out by giving you the history of this game. The
original version of High/Low, Baccarat, Keno, and Draw Poker were
built into the Stellar Quest game which I wrote between 1988 and
1989. At the suggestion of many SysOps, I made a cut of these
betting games and packaged them together as The Mycroft Casino
during the summer of 1989.
Soon afterwards, the game displays and the graphics were enhanced
to be clearer and more attractive. Also the Horse Racing game was
added.
In April of 1992 (after several minor changes), the game was
upgraded from version 2.14 to 3.01. At this time many new features
were added including the ability to download the documentation
from inside the door, multi-lingual support, a complete online
help system a several others. Also at this time I decided to
add full betting Craps and Roulette to the already existing 6
games. The process of upgrading from 2.14 to 3.01 took 2 months
of hard work during "free' hours of the week. The combination of
the two new games almost doubled the source code as both games are
quite elaborate in the variety of bets they can support. It was
decided because of the amount of effort, that the two new games
would only be included in 'registered' copies of the door.
-----
As for strategy, all I can say is that experimentation with the
various betting schemes, a fair amount of luck, and perhaps a
bit of reading up on casino game strategies will do the trick.
The program is intended to be both a source of pleasure as well
as a tool to either learn or sharpen skills at your favorite
casino games.
Please feel free to send in comments or suggestions using the
forms supplied. Also, it would be appreciated if you discover any
bugs in the program that you will either report them to your
SysOp, or use the included form to send them directly to me. This
should also include any typos or mispellings you find in any of
the game messages as well as this documentation.
Good luck & enjoy,
Michael W. Bayley

A.0 Limitations in Unregistered Version
=======================================
The unregistered version of this door has some limitations. For one,
the SysOp does not have access to any of the editors. These
limitations are to encourage the registration of the door. If you
enjoy the door and your SysOp has not yet registered his copy, then
please let him know you enjoy the door and encourage him to register
it. The following is a list of restrictions in the unregistered
version:
* No access to editors by the SysOp
* No access to Craps or Roulette
* Unregistered version banner with delay
* Occasional unregistered version messages

B.0 Game Terminology
====================
The following section explains some of the terminology used in Casino
gambling, and in this documentation.
ACTUAL ODDS This term, as referred to in this documentation
and in the program, refers to tha actual chance
that a given number will be rolled, spun, or a
particular card will be drawn. For instance, in a
standard deck of 52 playing cards there is a 51
to 1 (1 in 52) chance of drawing the Ace of Spades.
ANSI/VT100 ANSI and VT100 are two types of standards used in
display based communications. Both of these
standards share many sequences in common and ei-
ther of these standards may be used when playing
Casino. Make sure your terminal emulation mode is
set to one of these before attempting to play.
ASCII ASCII stands for the American Standard for
Communications Information Interchange. As to
relating to this game, this encompases the standard
control characters as well as the standard
printable characters used in most display devices.
BLACKJACK A term in the game of Blackjack which refers to
a natural win. This involves being dealt your
two initial cards and having their total add up
to 21. This usually pays off at 3 to 2.
BUST A Blackjack term referring to a hand that adds
up to a total greater than 21. This is a losing
hand.
BUY BET A craps term referring to a bet made on a specific
number that is payed off at actual odds.
COME BETS These are bets made at the same odds as pass bets
but made by a player after the come-out roll has
been made. These bets follow the same rules as
pass bets.
COME-OUT A craps term referring to a shooter's initial roll.
In this instance, a 7 or an 11 is an instant win-
ner, 2, 3, or 12 is an instant loser, and any
other number becomes the shooters point.
COMMAND KEY The Command Key is a key used to signal that you
want to execute a command. In Casino, either
the [SPACE BAR] or the [ENTER] keys may be used.
CRAPS A craps term referring to a roll of 2, 3, or 12.

Casino version 3.01 Page B2
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DOUBLE DOWN A blackjack term referring to a bet where the
player doubles his original bet and is dealt a
single card.
DOWNLOAD Downloading is the act of transferring a file from
the host (ie BBS) computer to your local computer.
In Casino, downloading is stricktly used for
aquiring the docmentation using a controlled
file transfer protocol. The protocol is selected
by the SysOp.
FIVE CARD CHARLIE A blackjack hand in which the player holds five
cards which total to 21 or less. This is a
winning hand in The Mycroft Casino and in some
video blackjack games. It is not a winning hand
in casino play.
FREE ODDS A backup bet made in craps behind a players
initial pass/don't pass bet. This bet pays off
at actual odds with no commission paid to the
casino (thus the term FREE).
GRAPHICS MODE Your Graphics Mode controls the environment in
which Casino presents information on your
display. There are three graphic modes available
in the game. ASCII mode provides you with the
standard ASCII character set. IBM mode provides
you with the IBM extended character set. COLOR
mode provides you with the IBM extended character
set and includes ANSI color sequences. Regardless
of mode, players need to support ANSI/VT100
terminal emulation in order to play.
HARD BET In craps, a term referring to a bet on either
double twos, double threes, double fours, or
double fives.
HIT A Blackjack term referring to a player requesting
an additional card.
HOP BET A craps term referring to a bet on a single roll
of the dice where the better calls the actual
combination of dice that he is betting on. Very
few casinos accept this bets since there is no
dedicated place on the table to handle it.
INSURANCE A Blackjack term referring to a side bet when the
dealer's up card is an Ace. The side bet is the
equivalent of half the original bet. If the dealer
has a blackjack, then no money exchanges hand (ie.
both the insurance money and original bet remain
in the player's posesssion. If the delaer does

not have a blackjack then the insurance money is
forfeit.
LAY BET A craps term referring to a bet against a parti-
cular number that is payed off at actual odds.
NUM LOCK The NumLock is a special key on the IBM keyboard.
In Casino, players should set their NumLock
toggle so that the numeric pad will issue numbers.
This prevents any conflict between terminal
programs as well as preventing any conflict with
local SysOp control keys. Once the NumLock toggle
is set, then a player may use the numeric keypad
when in Casino menus.
PAYOFF ODDS This term, as referred to in this document and
in gambling in general, refers to the ratio of
money bet to money paid out for winning the bet.
As an example, there is a 35 to 1 (or 1 in 35)
chance of rolling double sixes in craps. The
actual odds are then 1 to 35. However, the
casino will only pay 30 to 1. The difference
between the payoff odds and the actual odds give
the casinos a guaranteed edge which allows them
to always make money despite some large payoffs.
PASS A craps term referring to a shooter who wins on
his 'come-out' roll. Thus 3 straight passes
indicates that the shooter has successfully
rolled a 7 or an 11 on his last three consecu-
tive come-out rolls.
PLACE A horse racing term referring to a bet on a horse
where as the better wins if the horse comes in
1st or 2nd.
PLACE BETS A craps term referring to a bet either on or
against a particular number being rolled before
a 7.
POINT A craps term referring to the number the shooter
rolled on his come-out roll. The shooter must
repeat this number before a 7 is rolled or he
loses.
PUSH A general gambling term referring to a tie where
no money exchanges hand on the bet.
SHOOTER A craps term referring to the person currently
in control of the dice.

SHOW A horse racing term referring to a bet where the
better wins if the horse comes in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
STAND A Blackjack term referring to a player playing
the cards in hand and not desiring any additional
cards.
TAKE DOWN This term refers to 'taking down a bet'. To
take it down is to remove it from play and
place the amount of the bet back in your hands.
Many casino games have bets that may be 'taken
down' at any time, or some that may only be taken
down at specific points, and yet others that may
never be taken down until they either win or lose.
WIN A horse racing term referring to a bet that the
chosen horse will win the race.
