  4. Columbus' quincentennial provokes protests throughout Latin
  5. America

  8.     In the U.S., the controversy had raged so long and so
  9. intensely before the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discov . . .
  10. err, voyage to the New World that the actual day passed almost
  11. unnoticed last week. Not so in Latin America, where Native
  12. Americans constitute a majority of the population in a few
  13. countries and a large minority in others, and where cultural
  14. tensions between Indians, mixed-bloods and descendants of the
  15. conquista dores have long been severe. Two groups of native
  16. peoples from nearly opposite ends of the hemisphere -- Alaska
  17. and Peru -- met at the Teotihuacan pyramids outside Mexico City
  18. at the end of a month-long march to celebrate "500 years of
  19. survival." In the city, thousands of additional demonstrators
  20. danced and prayed on the Zocalo, the central square; still
  21. others hung a sign reading FIVE CENTURIES OF MASSACRE around the
  22. neck of a statue of Columbus on the elegant main avenue, Paseo
  23. de la Reforma. Mass demonstrations also occurred in Bolivia and
  24. Chile. In Buenos Aires some native people staged a three-day
  25. hunger strike that ended on Columbus Day in front of the Casa
  26. Rosada, the Argentine presidential palace. And in Managua,
  27. Nicaragua, a poster branded Columbus A BIG THIEF, MURDERER,
  28. RACIST, TORTURER, OPPRESSOR OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND INSTIGATOR
  29. OF THE BIG LIE.
