User Services Working Group Minutes
IETF - Los Angeles, California
Monday, March 4th, 1300-1500
Chair: Joyce K. Reynolds/ISI (jkrey@isi.edu)
Joyce Reynolds opened the session by providing a brief overview of,
"What is the USWG?" to the first time attendees. Next, attendees
introduced themselves to the group and briefly explained their
interest in the USV Area. A report on IETF User Services Area
activities was presented by Joyce, which included USV Area Working
Group Status and related USV Area I-Ds. There are currently eight
active working groups in this area. All of them held one or more
sessions at the Los Angeles IETF. The USWG email list has moved:
uswg@isi.edu. To subscribe: uswg-request@isi.edu.
The Humanities and Arts WG (HARTS) has a new working group chair:
Janet Max. Susan Siegfried resigned due to a job change. Scott
Stoner will continue to co-chair. Jennifer Sellers has resigned as
co-chair of the Internet School Networking (ISN) WG. Sepi Boroumand
will be replacing her. Jodi Ito will continue to co-chair.

Mr. Rafael Fernandez-Calvo, a member of ISOC and chair of the
Organizing Committee of the Spanish Chapter of ISOC provided a pointer
to a Spanish translation of the FYI RFC, "Internet Users' Glossary"
for the IETF user services community and the RFC Editor:

Tom Newell (InterNIC Liaison) presented an update on the USV-Web page,
and an update on new InterNIC projects. Joyce is tasked to provide
additions/updates to the USV-Web page and will work with Tom on this
endeavor. Meanwhile, Tom welcomed additional input and comments from
the USWG. Tom gave the current pointer to the USV-Web page:

Tom mentioned a new effort underway with the ALA (American Library
Association) and the InterNIC. This is a project about Internet
trainers, modular training formats and development of related
programs. It is still in development, but if you would like updates
or additional information, contact: tomn@internic.net.
At the Dallas IETF, the USWG requested that the NIC Locator database
be demolished. Debbie Hamilton (InterNIC Directory and Database
Services Support) proceeded with the request. The demolition was
completed the week of 11 December 95.
Jill Foster (University of Newcastle, Jill.Foster@newcastle.ac.uk)
presented a report on related global liaison group activities of
TERENA's Information Services and User Support (ISUS) group.
EC 4th Framework - Scimitar - Standards input/output
Desire - SURFnet - coordinating with approximately 26 European
partners and associates.

Discussion/Participation of USWG projects were next on the agenda.
USWG project focus was placed on updates to FYI 7 "FYI on Questions
and Answers: Answers to Commonly Asked "Experienced Internet User"
Questions", (Also RFC 1207), February 1991, and FYI 4 "FYI on
Questions and Answers: Answers to Commonly asked "New Internet User"
Questions", (Also RFC 1594), March 1994.
A brief discussion was held in regards to the future vision of the USV
Area in the IETF for the next two years, and potential candidates for
the USV Area Director position in 1998.
