  4. ISN Working Group Minutes
  5. Monday, March 4th, 1996
  6. Los Angeles, CA

  9. The ISN WG convened at 3:30pm by Jodi Ito, co-chair. There was one 
  10. addition to the agenda as listed at the beginning of the meeting - 
  11. discussion of Net Day '96.
  12.  
  13. First order of business was to announce the change in co-chairs. Jennifer 
  14. Sellers has resigned and Sepi Boroumand will be replacing her. 
  15.  
  16. Next, attendees introduced themselves to the group and briefly 
  17. explained their interest in ISN.
  18.  
  19. The update to FYI 22 - FAQ for Schools has been completed. It was 
  20. submitted by authors Jennifer Sellers and Julie Robichaux as an I-D and 
  21. approved by the IESG to be published as an Informational RFC.

  23. Pat Smith from Merit will lead the relocation of the ISN document 
  24. repository once it has been reviewed by ISN members. Tom Newell and 
  25. Julie Robichaux from InterNIC, and Bill Manning from ISI volunteered 
  26. to assist reviewing the site. Bill Manning from ISI also offered to mirror 
  27. the site after it has been moved. Jodi will write the FYI describing the 
  28. repository by next June IETF in Montreal. A short discussion of the site 
  29. maintenance encouraged recruiting of an educational organization to 
  30. assume on-going maintenance.

  32. The directory of educational projects was killed due to a lack of 
  33. progress and the increase in web search tools which facilitate 
  34. searching for school projects on the Web. The ISN goals and milestones 
  35. will be updated to reflect these changes.

  37. The effort to publicize the FYI series to the educational community was 
  38. discussed. Suggestions included approaching international 
  39. organizations involving youths like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, 
  40. National Educators Assn. (www.nea.org), Computer-Using Educators. 
  41. Also Tom Newell offered to distribute information sheets at 
  42. educational conferences in the future. Jodi will draft the short summary 
  43. of the FYI series.

  45. The group expressed concerns regarding Net Day 96. Though Net Day 96 
  46. raises community awareness of the lack of technology infrastructure in 
  47. schools, if a school is wired without regard for integration into the 
  48. curriculum, provision of on-going funding for recurring costs, training and 
  49. support, then the investment will probably be unused and wasted. The 
  50. group supported Joan Gargano and Carole Teach's comments which were 
  51. circulated on the mailing list. One suggestion was to include sample 
  52. school technology plans and wiring guidelines in the ISN document 
  53. repository.

  55. Last item to be discussed was the ISN support for INET 96 educational 
  56. activities including organization and support of an education booth at 
  57. INET 96 in Montreal. A question was raised regarding waiver of INET 
  58. fees for those assisting. The issue will be brought up w/ the ISOC 
  59. Education committee and Educational Workshop planning group. As 
  60. details of the INET 96 Education Workshop and activities become 
  61. available, they will be posted to the ISN list.
