  4. Minutes of the Internet School Networking WG (ISN)
  5. Monday, April 7, 1997
  6.  
  7. The ISN working group was called to order by Jodi Ito and Sepideh Boroumand,
  8. cochairs of ISN at 3 p.m.  The following agenda was approved by attendees.
  9.  
  10. 1) Introductions
  11. 2) Web Site Re-design/Conceptualization
  12. 3) Discussion of ISN II doc - the "what next after I'm connected?"
  13. 4) Help Desk document outline
  14. 5) Common Pitfalls document outline
  15. 6) AOB
  16.  
  17. Attendees were invited to introduce themselves and briefly describe their
  18. interests in ISN.
  19.  
  20. Next, comments and feed back were made as to the content development necessary
  21. for the ISN web pages and how it should be setup.  There is currently a web
  22. page which needs to be updated.  It was decided that the main web pages
  23. will be divided into three parts as follows:
  24.  
  25. **  Technical How To's.  This will have links to other technical resources on
  26.     the web.
  27.     Suggested links are:
  28.  
  29.     --  Connect your school (wireless, ISDN, Frame Relay, XDSL, and Cable
  30.         Modems.)
  31.     --  Use the Net
  32.     --  Topologies (How to connect your PC to the LAN, the LAN to server, etc.)
  33.     --  Setup server for mail service
  34.     --  What equipment and softwares you need for students
  35.     --  Configure popular PCs
  36.     --  Setup if all things were equal
  37.  
  38. **2.  Things You Should Know.  This like the above will have links to
  39.       non-technical resources on the Web.  Suggested links are:
  40.  
  41.       --  Legal issues
  42.       --  Funding Opportunites (e.g. Quest at Ames Research Center, DOE,
  43.       NSF/NIE)
  44.       --  About AUPs
  45.       --  Protecting Children
  46.       --  Common Pitfalls
  47.       --  Success Stories (e.g. Smart Valley)
  48.       --  Copyright issues
  49.       --  "It's not just about Technology" - Classrooms that are conducive
  50.       to having PCs in them
  51.  
  52. **3.  National Projects around the world
  53. **4.  Resources; Commercial and non-commercial
  54.  
  55. These webpages will also have a search engine and a registration for
  56. resources.  There was a concern that there may be authencity problems with
  57. this method and it'll be a problem to constantly moderate the pages.  It was
  58. suggested to have a mild moderation.
  59.  
  60. We next moved to the Discussion of ISN II doc - the "what next after I'm
  61. connected?"  This document was suggested at the last ISN in San Jose.  The
  62. concensus on this paper was that this might have been useful three years ago.
  63. Most teachers get Internet in connection with an educational project so they
  64. will learn through that project on what to do next.  It was agreed not to go
  65. on with this document.

  67. The help desk outline was discussed next.  A copy of the outline will be
  68. mailed to all the Memphis attendees for comments.
  69.  
  70. Next on the Agenda was a brain storming session on the need for a possible
  71. paper, potentially called "Common Pitfalls for K-12 General Community". The
  72. need for this paper was suggested at IETF 37 in San Jose.
  73. Chris Rapier kindly forwarded major points to keep in mind when writing this
  74. paper through an email prior to the meeting.

  76. We listed his major points and opened them to suggestions and additions.
  77. Altogether 6 major issues were suggested.
  78.  
  79. **  Technology Wasted
  80.     --  Lack of Support/administration/training/peer support/funding
  81.     --  Administration (how do you leverage remote administration).  What
  82.     tools will you choose and have rules/policies and procedures.)
  83.     Keep TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) in mind.
  84.  
  85. **  Modem pools & any other related modem issues
  86.     --  Using an ISP rather than having your own modem pool (this is not cost
  87.     effective)
  88.     --  Buying good desktop modems as to paying for cheap ones.  You get
  89.     what you pay for.
  90.  
  91. **  Not enough planning with changing of providers (ISPs)
  92.     --  Get your own domain name (e.g. school.k12.state.us)
  93.     --  Run DHCP
  94.     --  Rent/leasing vs. purchasing/taking out a loan
  95.  
  96. **  Lack of Technology Planning
  97.     --  Electricity consideration
  98.     --  Heat
  99.     --  Asbestos
  100.     --  Before you take the plunge (learn how to setup if all things were
  101.     equal).
  102.     --  Classrom Setup
  103.  
  104. **  Importance of Commercial support
  105.     --  Pay now vs. pay later
  106.     --  Service maintance (save in the long run)
  107.     --  Cost of training/spares/hardware
  108.  
  109. **  Security
  110.     --  Protect Infrustructure
  111.     --  Anything that demands privacy (e.g. teachers sending grades
  112.     to students)

  114.     --  Your students cracking from the school server

  118. It was also suggested to find school technical specialists to look at the
  119. above mentioned suggestions for input.

  143. The purpose of this meeting was to get educators input on ISN discussions
  144. made earlier in the day and in general get their feedback on ISN's direction.

  146. The meeting was very successful.  T. Schieffer of Wooddale High School in
  147. Memphis informed us that it is Spring Break in Memphis, otherwise the
  148. turnout would have been higher.
