Clan Notes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andron is a very old warrior clan, it members contributing to the ground forces
at Federation installations. However, while Star Fleet's idea of ground troops
is marine grunts, the Clan Andron tends to think of its warrior more as
rangers. Partly due to this quasi-independence instilled in members, the clan
is not very high in the current social structure of Andor. It was, however, the
Clan Andron that started the Rite of Darrian, a maturity ritual still practiced
by some.
Needless to say, in the modern world, clans much like Terran surnames are no
longer quite so indicative of an individual's function in life. However, while
many individuals have broken free of the clan-system, others remain constrained
by it, as tradition on Andor is not to be taken lightly. The Clan Andron has
recently fallen in stature, even though it is still charged with the protection
of Andorian leaders. Moreover, a number have found work as mercenaries,
corporate police, and in other similar occupations (many even serve in the
Andorian Corps of Enforcers).
Personal History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Tarkine he was 6, his father, Talon, joined the Warriors of Andor, a group
that promoted Andorian goals and culture. His father felt that too many
Andorians, especially the youth, were ignoring their traditional heritage in
favor of the new cultures being introduced via the Federation. His father was
not against the Federation, per se. He was just against the "cultural
pollution" it was causing to Andor's native culture.
Not all in the group were as discerning, however. The "Warriors on Andor" is
now widely known as a terrorist organization. Shortly after joining, his father
was charged by the Andorian government with joining a subversive organization,
conspiracy, and terrorism, and by the Federation with conspiracy and terrorism.
Tarkine's father fled and became a interstellar fugitive. Naturally he took his
family with him. This included not only Tarkine, but also Shyla, his sister,
and his mother, Rakara, who was with child. They fled first to the Orion
Colonies where, due to the poor medical staff and their lack of knowledge
regarding Andorian physiology, Rakara lost her child.
After a year they moved to the Klingon Empire, where they stayed for 4 years.
Following that, they moved to the Romulan Empire where they stayed until
Tarkine was 15.
It was at this "tender" age that Tarkine underwent the "Rite of Darrian" an
ancient Andorian ritual of survival in which the participant (usually a young
adult between 15 and 20) is left in a hostile wilderness setting for 7 days.
They are given 3 days of food, a knife, and a recovery beacon. In preparation
for the Rite, they are fed half rations and exercised daily, being permitted
only 4 hours of rest per day for the 7 days prior to the Rite. This starts the
participant out at a disadvantage, hungry, tired, and with minimal survival
gear. While not actually outlawed, the Rite is strongly discouraged because of
the great hazards involved, and the Federation is pressing for it to be
classified under child abuse in cases involving minors.
Tarkine's Rite was held on a desert planet. He was attacked by a "desert
tiger", a six-legged predator with LARGE claws. He killed the beast with his
knife but only after it mauled his leg, leaving a series of deep scars on his
right thigh. Despite this, he survived the ordeal. He still has the skin of the
creature, one of his few personal effects.
After Tarkine survived the Rite, he was tattooed on his left shoulder blade to
signify his "membership" as a full-adult in andorian society (by ancient
standards). It was then that Talon realized what he and his family were leaving
behind, living as fugitives, and so he decided to return to Andor and give
himself up. In the subsequent trial he was found to be innocent of all charges
except the Andorian charge of membership in a subversive group for which he was
sentenced to two years imprisonment. He was released after six months on a good
conduct parole.
Currently, both parents live and work on Andor. His father teaches Romulan and
Klingon language and battle tactics at the Andorian branch of Star Fleet
Academy. His mother works for a major shipping line as a computer specialist.
His sister has a PhD in Andorian History and does research on ancient Andorian
myths and legends.
Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duran joined Star Fleet with his father's blessing (which came as a surprise
given his father's history). During his years in the academy he met many people
who have had an impact on his life and career, but none as much as Professor
Jar'laha, a Vulcan Tactics instructor. Jar'laha got a glimpse of the tatoo on
Duran's shoulder blade and questioned Duran about it. Impressed with the
explanation, Jar'laha spoke to "friends" of his in Star Fleet Intelligence and
recommended Duran. SFIC reviewed and interviewed Duran and accepted him upon
his graduation from the Academy. Thus, Duran attended the Field Operations
Subdivision of the Intelligence Branch for two and a half years after his
graduation.
For his Cadet Cruise, he posed as a security grunt aboard the USS Grok, a
Loknar class Frigate assigned to the "Blue Fleet" (the section of Star Fleet
crewed primarily by Andorians). Here, he learned how security operations
function aboard a starship from a lowly enlisted man's perspective while
reporting to SFIC regarding various details of (already known) equipment and
fleet specs. In essence, this was one long training exercise to assess Duran's
field-worth while honing his skills. The information gathering tasks became
gradually more and more difficult, the object for SFIC being to control the
midshipmen's mean active-time to one year. A cadet who was captured pilfering
information in less than a year would be thought to be of below average
usefulness, while a candidate who lasted longer than a year was beating the
odds. Duran lasted two years and three months, an outstanding performance by
any account. He was promoted directly to 2nd Lieutenant, skipping the rank of
Ensign entirely.
After the Cruise, he was placed aboard the Independent Free Merchant Wigiath,
one of numerous small merchant craft operated by Star Fleet Intelligence. While
the ship wasn't shuttling agents from one destination to another, it was
engaging in speculative trade, carrying passengers, or even carrying important
messages not meant for the various hazards of subspace transmission.
The Wigiath worked in the Tholian Sector for a year, building a respectable
list of references. Then it moved into the Triangle, plying the routes along
the Klingon border. With the end of the Demon Wars, Star Fleet was worried
about the Romulans seeking to topple the Klingon Imperial Council from within,
offering to support various pretenders to the High Throne in return for future
favors. It had already been well established that encrypted communiques were
being transferred between unknown members of the Klingon High Command and the
Romulan Star Empire via a network of independent merchants. Even more unusual
was the knowledge that many of these communiques (as many as 98%) were duds,
being delivered to a whole host of individuals who had nothing to do with
anything, an obvious attempt to hide the trail of the real communiques from
large intelligence gathering organizations. Star Fleet needed some way to
identify a true message, and then trace it to its final destination. Putting
out enough vessels such as the Wigiath to carry all the important mail in the
Triangle was simply not a feasible alternative.
However, a break in the case came in May of 2257. The Klingon Minister for
Intelligence had come to the conclusion that somebody in the High Council was
leaking secrets to the Romulans, and he fingered that person as Koth of the
house of Zokar. However, there was an element of uncertainty, as in any
conclusion of this nature, and he could find no Klingon willing to openly
challenge such a highly respected and powerful member of the High Council.
Further, he could not bring himself to order an assassination, as no Klingon
would dare carry out such a dishonorable task (and even if he could find one,
which was actually not so difficult, he himself would become a major suspect
due to his position in the Klingon government). However, he did suggest to his
contacts in Star Fleet Intelligence that were Koth to for some reason be slain
at the hands of a Federation citizen, he would arrange for the killer's mock
execution and extradition back to Federation space.
Taking the hint, Duran was ordered to carry out the deed in a "burglary"
attempt of the Zokar residence along the Triangle border. He completed the
assassination and managed to toss the contents of Koth's safe (including data
crystals) out a window for an accomplice to fetch. However, as expected, he was
caught before he could escape the area guarded by transporter dampers. The
Intelligence Minister faked the execution of Talkarn Vagatho Duran, Tarkine's
cover name at the time, and sent him back home with a pat on the antennae.
While the assassination served the Klingons, the burglary served the
Federation, as contained within the data crystals in Koth's safe were the names
of numerous Triangle merchants, most of them in the business of speculative
trade and message transferral. SFIC took this list to be the blueprints for a
sizable section of the Triangle communique network.
Duran's next assignment was to play the part of a powerful orion slave
merchant's bodyguard. The slaver, Morigath Kriztov, agreed to cooperate with
SFIC in return for exclusive transportation rights of green-women in Federation
space, a deal which if made public, would make SFIC look very bad indeed.
However, thanks to his merchant contacts, Kriztov was essential to the
infiltration of this Klingon-Romulan connection.
Over the course of a little over a year, Duran was able to "bug" numerous
people on Koth's list of contacts. However, it seemed that the Romulans were
being cautious after Koth's assassination, fearing that the Federation might be
up to something. They eventually began finding the bugs, and Kriztov was pin-
pointed as the probable source. Kriztov was forced to flee the Triangle, and
Duran's cover was jeopardized when he single-handedly and "in broad daylight"
disposed of an assassination team sent to kill Kriztov and his crew.
Duran was sent to Command School for his excellent work in the operation, even
though it had not been a great success. He has recently been assigned to the
Excalibur under the cover of Assistant Security Chief. His mission on the
Excalibur is multifaceted. First and foremost, Star Fleet is worried that the
Romulans might be trying to get a spy on board. If they achieve this, not only
would they be privy to all sorts of technical secrets, but they could destroy
the prototype vessel on its virgin cruise. Duran is to pay particular attention
to Cmdr. tr'Remas, as though Oein is completely trusted by Star Fleet, he is
also known to have a certain degree of racial patriotism. It is hoped that a
Romulan spy might try to contact tr'Remas, thus blowing his cover.
Aside from protecting the ship, Duran is also charged with watching the command
team and reporting on their performance. As with any starship this important,
Star Fleet wants independent verification on the reports Captain LeBonk is
submitting. With two females in the top two spots, it is somewhat evident that
Star Fleet is making an "equal opportunity" statement. Being the newest and
most publicized ship in the fleet, the Excalibur was probably carefully chosen
to make this statement. However, while LeBonk has been trained in showing the
best face possible, Star Fleet wants the truth, no matter how much it hurts. If
the command team is dysfunctional in any way, it wants to know about it. Duran
is therefore instructed to gain the confidence of Lt. Bellasario and any close
friends on the command team which he may acquire.
Personality
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As with all Andorians, Duran is coldly logical but, like Vulcans, also
possesses deep and powerful emotions. Hard to anger but once enraged, his
temper coupled with his unique training makes him VERY dangerous. Though
trained to perform as a "social chameleon", his personality-type is not
naturally suited to the task, preferring to operate alone in clandestine
missions. In short, he is a bit of a loner and has few if any true friends.
===============================================================================
Cover Identity: 2nd Lieutenant Bakahna Sethon Khemsa
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bakahna is a naval clan serving on both warships and merchant marine ships.
Unlike the Clan Talkarn, the Bakahnas concentrate more on escort and shipboard
assault than trade and commerce.
Sethon Khemsa had been stationed aboard the USS Grok for nearly ten years.
Since the Grok was also the location of Duran's cadet cruise, it is hoped he'll
be able to answer questions about the ship and perform convincingly as Lt.
Sethon Khemsa, on the off-chance that he meets anyone familiar with the ship or
its crew.
Family:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Born 22/2601.25 on Andor. Mother and Father deceased. Sister: Warrant Officer
Eris Khemsa, Sensor Modulation Specialist, USS Typhoon. [Note: There really is
such a person, and her brother, Sethon, was recently killed aboard the Grok in
a training exercise gone awry. She and the crew of the Grok are ignorant as to
his death, believing that he's recovered from the episode and has been
transferred to the Excalibur. His body is being stored for a future burial to
be scheduled after the completion of this assignment. As is general policy with
such assignments, Duran's facial structure, nose, and hair have been surgically
altered to match the deceased, and the Excalibur's computer will recognize
Duran's voice as Khemsa's even though the voice pattern file has not itself
been changed. Likewise with optic and fingerprint security checks. The entire
thing is executed through file pointers executed via Level-6 access,
superseding the system administrator, Lt. Bellasario, and even the Captain.]

Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Khemsa served almost a full decade aboard the USS Grok. Guarding the Andorian
borders well within federation space, the vessel did not become involved in
actual combat except against petty nuisances such as smugglers. However, on a
training exercise, an emergency pressure door malfunctioned, crushing his rib-
cage and partially collapsing his lungs. After his recovery, Khemsa requested
an assignment aboard any ship outside the Blue Fleet. Perhaps in way of apology
for the near-death experience, Star Fleet awarded him with a promotion and
placed him aboard the Excalibur.
