Personal History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jakob Andrew Bannister (or Jake as he prefers) was born at Xanadu Station on
Venus, Sol. At the time his father was the commanding officer of the base and
his mother ran the hospital. Both parents, being highly ranked and highly
motivated in their professions, planned for Jake to join Star Fleet as soon as
possible, pushing him through his schooling at an accelerated pace by hiring
private tutors and sending him to private schools during the break periods of
his regular school. Predictably, Jake resented the treatment but had little in
the way of recourse. Both his parents were strict disciplinarians, and any time
he would attempt to skip out on his studies, he'd usually be caught and made to
do all his least favorite chores (including scrubbing the bathroom clean with
his toothbrush, and then being forced to brush his teeth with it). To put it
succinctly, Jake *hated* his parents.
Service History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake entered Star Fleet Academy at the ripe old age of 16 years, normally a
ridiculous age for a human cadet, but with the help of his high marks in
school, his father managed to pull some strings and get Jake admitted despite
the age requirement. There he excelled mainly in sports, and especially in
karate and judo and his first love, baseball. Star Fleet actually had a
baseball squad that year (the short-lived Star Destroyers which later had to
change their name to the Star Defenders). Jake played 3rd base, and the
Destroyers had a winning season, making it into the Collegiate Finals where
they finally lost to the Pandas from the University of Beijing.
Of course, Jake's coursework had suffered, and he found himself growing
increasingly disaffected with engineering, the discipline which his parents had
chosen for him. Nonetheless, he managed to graduate, if only to get them off
his back. He performed well aboard the Dauntless, helping the ship win the
sector engineering efficiency competition that year. After final graduation, he
was stationed aboard the USS Tucana as an Engineering Officer. That assignment
would to prove to be a defining moment of his life.
While on a typical survey mission, the Tucana was caught in the vicinity of a
nova and nearly destroyed. While simultaneously running the repair parties in
engineering and keeping the ship spaceworthy, Jake tended the wounds of his
Chief Engineer and other wounded. It was here that he discovered both his love
of the healing profession and his natural ability for medicine. After receiving
a Commendation for Valor, Jake requested and received two years of leave in
order to study biology and medicine at the DeForest Academy on Epsilon
Rhiannon. Of course, his parents were incensed over this decision, telling
their son that he was effectively derailing his career. Eventually they came to
support it, however, seeing that his mind was made up.
Those two years slowly stretched into eight, and now Jake realizes that his
parents were right about the quest for a medical doctorate derailing his career
(at least in terms of rank advancement). Nonetheless, he's happy with his
decision and is one of only a handful of people in Star Fleet who are trained
both as engineers and as medical professionals.
