  54.                CXLV.  Peldor the Businessman

  60.   As Rillen rode toward Ged's partially-finished castle, he
  61. noted that construction was proceeding as rapidly as before.
  62. The place would probably be finished within a month, at this
  63. rate.
  64.  
  65. Ged:  (wanders out of the castle, pointing upward)  There's
  66.   my main gate.  (he walks across a drawbridge)  And there's
  67.   my moat.  Yes, things are going well.  Say, nice to see
  68.   you.  It's been what, two weeks now?  How are things?
  69. Rillen:  Maybe not so well.  Guess what has happened?
  70. Ged:  Uh...(knits his brows)  Peldor robbed the city vault?
  71. Rillen:  Hmm, interesting guess...but no.
  72. Ged:  Damn!  Well, what is it, then?
  73. Rillen:  Mongo has left the city - headed eastward, I think.
  74.   He told no one, but simply rode away, all by himself.
  75. Ged:  Hmm.  Strange.  I hope he's okay.  That business with
  76.   Flint, and everything...
  77. Rillen:  Aye.  There is more, though.  Peldor has...how can
  78.   I put this?  He _bought_ the Green Dragon Inn.
  79. Ged:  He did WHAT?!?
  80. Rillen:  Bought it!  Paid the last owner, old Roscoe, some
  81.   sum of money - enough, I would suppose, to ensure a happy
  82.   retirement for the old fellow.  Peldor has taken over all
  83.   operations of the place.
  84. Ged:  Wow.  Maybe this means we'll get free rooms while in
  85.   the city.
  86. Rillen:  From Peldor?  I seriously doubt it.  But anyhow-
  87. Ged:  You mean there's more?!?
  88. Rillen:  Of course.
  89. Ged:  Let me guess.  Peldor's trying to get the temple of
  90.   Pelor, god of light, renamed to suit him?
  91. Rillen:  Not quite.  Actually, Belphanior has dropped from
  92.   sight.
  93. Ged:  Hmm.  Not surprising.
  94. Rillen:  It has been two weeks.  Unusual, even for him.
  95. Ged:  True.  Say, have you seen Arnold?
  96. Rillen:  No.  Why?
  97. Ged:  I sent him into town to pick up his armor.  It should
  98.   have been fixed by now.  No matter - I'm sure he'll turn
  99.   up sooner or later.  He's getting fairly competent at
  100.   taking care of business; I dare say he's matured a good
  101.   deal since I first hired him on.
  102. Rillen:  That is good.  Well, how goes the castle?
  103. Ged:  Well.  It should be done well before spring.  With any
  104.   luck, people will move out here, farmers mostly, and I'll
  105.   have a small township going.
  106. Rillen:  Sounds like fun.
  107. Ged:  Yea.  Of course, the only temple in the area will be
  108.   that of Boccob...
  109.  
  110.   They kept on talking, and before long, the day had passed.
  111. Then the next day passed, and the next.  On one occasion,
  112. they went to Greyhawk, to check up on Peldor.
  113.  
  114. Ged:  (he and Rillen enter the Green Dragon Inn)  Let's
  115.   see what he's up to-
  116. Rillen:  Whoa!
  117. Ged:  It's completely remodeled!  And in only two weeks?!?
  118.   Boccob's blessed bones!  I never-
  119. bouncer:  (standing six-foot-eight, he blocks the way in)
  120. Rillen:  Eh?
  121. bouncer:  Excuse me, gentlemen, but I'll have to ask you to
  122.   please leave your weapons at the door.  (he points to a
  123.   nearby counter, which is manned by a grizzled dwarf with
  124.   a waist-long beard)  With him, if you please.
  125. dwarf:  (grins)  Hand 'em over, fellas.
  126. Ged:  Sure.  (he hands Lightbringer to the dwarf)  That's
  127.   it for me.
  128. Lightbringer:  What??!
  129. Ged:  Shh.  The rules are the rules, you know.
  130. Lightbringer:  (grumbling)
  131. bouncer:  Are you wearing any armor today, gentlemen?
  132. Ged:  Not me.
  133. Rillen:  Me neither.  (reluctantly hands over his staff)
  134.   I would have hoped that Peldor might have made his rules
  135.   different from every other classy inn of Greyhawk.
  136. Ged:  Nah.  That's why they're classy.
  137. dwarf:  Heh heh.  You got it, dude.
  138. bouncer:  I assume you know our owner, from the way you
  139.   speak of him.  (he signals to a serving wench)  Go find
  140.   the boss.
  141. waitress:  (bustling)  Sure thing!
  142. bouncer:  Old friends, eh?
  143. Rillen:  Indeed we are.
  144. Ged:  (makes his way into the inn, where an attractive woman
  145.   is busy tending bar)  Did Peldor hire you, too?
  146. woman:  Of course.  What's your pleasure?
  147. Rillen:  Nothing for me, thanks.
  148. Ged:  (thinking to truly test the quality of Peldor's new
  149.   establishment)  Wine.  Velunan wine, white if you have any.
  150. bartender:  Coming right up.  (she looks through the racks
  151.   of bottles behind the bar, about fifteen feet from the
  152.   two adventurers)
  153. Ged:  Pretty competent.  And pretty.
  154. Rillen:  For all we know, she can fight, too.
  155. bartender:  (returns, with a wine bottle and a glass)  Yep,
  156.   I can.  (she gestures to a scimitar hanging over the bar)
  157.   Beat a lot of so-called swordsmen, back in the old days.
  158.   I can also hit you with a dagger at fifty paces, climb a
  159.   sheer wall, and hear things said about me by people who
  160.   don't know I'm listening.
  161. Ged:  Uh...
  162. Rillen:  (stares dumbfounded)
  163. waitress:  Sure you won't have a drink?
  164.  
  165.   Just then, Peldor walked into the room, chatting merrily
  166. with a couple of local politician-types.
  167.  
  168. Peldor:  Ah!  My old friends finally show up!
  169. Ged:  Well, we were kind of in the area and just figured
  170.   we'd see what you had done...
  171. Rillen:  Basically.
  172. Peldor:  I've done all kinds of things.  (he ushers the
  173.   two men into a padded booth, where they are instantly
  174.   catered to by some waitress)  Improved the security -
  175.   Vinnie there's not only a good bouncer, but he's polite
  176.   too.  Customers like that, you know.
  177. Ged:  Yea, we noticed.
  178. Rillen:  Vinnie?
  179. Peldor:  But that's not all.  I also paid off most of the
  180.   waiters.  Any place run by Peldor has got to have plenty
  181.   of comely young waitresses.
  182. Ged:  Figures...
  183. Peldor:  And I've more than doubled our alcohol selection.
  184.   A wise investment for me, at this point.  Also we have
  185.   some of the finest chefs in the land now!  (he grins)
  186. Rillen:  So instead of merely being an excellent inn, this
  187.   is now an outstanding inn?
  188. Peldor:  Something like that.  We've also added a casino
  189.   upstairs.  In fact, I had three additional floors added
  190.   first thing.
  191. Ged:  Three floors?!?  Already?!?
  192. Peldor:  Yup.  That's over two dozen more rooms.  And I've
  193.   had all the rooms refurbished - they're a lot nicer now.
  194. Rillen:  I am impressed.  You really are taking this thing
  195.   seriously.
  196. Peldor:  Of course.  Why, you wouldn't believe the sorts
  197.   of people I've had to hobnob with, due to my new status
  198.   as a city mogul.  Politicians - see those two over in
  199.   the booth there?  One's the mayor's assistant, and the
  200.   other is on the city council.
  201. Ged:  Hmm.
  202. Peldor:  That's not it, though.  There's also leading magi
  203.   and priests, merchants, generals, nobles...why, they all
  204.   know me.  Or soon will.  Being a businessman is a serious
  205.   undertaking, you know, both socially and economically.
  206. bartender:  (refills Ged's wine glass)
  207. Peldor:  (points offhandedly to the bartender)  Say, I'm
  208.   sure you've met Tanya here...
  209. Rillen:  Yes.  Most impressive.
  210. Tanya:  (beams)
  211. Peldor:  Isn't she, though?  All that, and she can make
  212.   drinks, too!  What a deal!  Good help _is_ hard to find,
  213.   but once you've found it, you're set.
  214. Ged:  Must be your charming personality.
  215. Peldor:  Yep, that's what I figured.  (to Tanya)  For the
  216.   record, these are some of my old adventuring buddies.
  217.   They get the VIP treatment whenever they show up.
  218. Rillen:  (looking around at the many happy patrons)  Looks
  219.   to me like everyone is getting the VIP treatment.
  220. Peldor:  Maybe, but I want my staff to know who you guys
  221.   are.  Ahh, 'my staff'...I like the sound of that...now
  222.   where did I put those cigars?
  223. Ged:  Well, we really must be going.
  224. Peldor:  No, no, no!  Stay for dinner, I insist.
  225. Ged:  Can't do it - I've got a castle to check on.  Say,
  226.   do you know anything about Mongo?  Or Belphanior?
  227. Peldor:  Not really, why?
  228. Ged:  They've both dropped out of sight.  Word is, Mongo
  229.   left the city.
  230. Peldor:  And he didn't even see my place yet!  How rude!
  231. Ged:  Oh well.
  232. Rillen:  Does this new business mean that your adventuring
  233.   days are at an end?
  234. Peldor:  Oh, heavens, no!  Anytime the need arises - or
  235.   the desire strikes - I'll leave the staff in charge and
  236.   split.  That _is_ what I hired them for...
  237. Ged:  Hmm.  Well, we've got to be going.
  238. Peldor:  Okay.  If you need to find me, you know where I
  239.   am.  (he heads upstairs)
  240. Rillen:  (he and Ged leave, and wander along the streets
  241.   of the city)  That was interesting.  Moreso than I ever
  242.   suspected it would be.
  243. Ged:  Yea.  You know, it wouldn't surprise me in the least
  244.   if the scoundrel was running a den of thieves from that
  245.   place...(he looks at Rillen)
  246. Rillen:  (looks at Ged)
  247. both:  Nah, couldn't be.
  248.  
  249.   Before the day was out, they found Arnold, who was busy
  250. shopping (!) for new clothes in the marketplaces of the
  251. city.

  253. Rillen:  I think I shall stay in town for a while.  I need
  254.   some peace and quiet to read those books I have.
  255. Ged:  Very well.  We'll see you when we see you.
