  19. In addition to rec.games.frp, there are a number of mailing lists and
  20. digests (or newsletters) on the net which may be of interest to
  21. role-playing enthusiasts.

  23. The difference between a mailing list and a digest is that a digest is
  24. collected, edited, and distributed by an editor, while a mailing list
  25. simply forwards all incoming mail to a list of subscribers. Mailing
  26. lists tend toward high volume with many digressions; digests tend
  27. toward low volume with high signal-to-noise ratios. The way of
  28. subscribing is the same for both, so I won't differentiate between them
  29. in the remainder of this message.

  31. As usual, an explanation about listservers in general before I list
  32. the lists. Read this before trying anything.
  33.  
  34. There are basically three ways in which you could subscribe to a
  35. mailing list or digest: through a "listserv" address, through a
  36. "majordomo" address, or through a "request" address. With each mailing
  37. list, however, only ONE of these will work correctly.
  38.  
  39. To subscribe to a list, DON'T send mail to the xxx-l@yyy address
  40. mentioned below. Instead, send mail to listserv@yyy or listserver@yyy.
  41. You need to use the xxx-l address only later, once you are already
  42. subscribed. If you have never used a listserver before, send a message
  43. with subject line and message body saying just "HELP" (without the
  44. quotes) to listserv@yyy.
  45.  
  46. If there is no listserv address (that is, if your mail bounces), try
  47. the same procedure using "majordomo" instead of "listserv". Majordomo
  48. is growing as a new unix mailist list manager. If "majordomo" doesn't
  49. work either, you're trying to get on a manually managed mailing list.
  50. A list that is managed by a listserv or majordomo can (usually) be
  51. recognised by the name: xxx-l instead of just xxx. If there is no "-l"
  52. suffix, the list is usually managed manually.
  53.  
  54. Manually managed mailing lists generally use xxx-request@yyy addresses.
  55. These are almost always administrative (human) contacts, and as such,
  56. can be used as a point of subscribing. Subscribing to one of these
  57. lists is usually done by hand, and may thus take a while. It is common
  58. courtesy to put "subscribe" in the subject line of your subscription
  59. request.
  60.  
  61. For example, if you were interested in joining the spj-l list, you
  62. would send mail to listserv@cornell.edu, with a message saying, for
  63. example, "SUB spj-l Mr. Bill Clinton" (without the quotes). You would
  64. then be subscribed to the SpellJammer discussion list. To join the
  65. Amber roleplaying list, you'd send a nice, personal request to
  66. amber-request@hagar.ph.utexas.edu, which would be answered by a human,
  67. usually at the weekend. The Amber list is managed manually, so you
  68. won't be subscribed immediately, as you would when using a listserv.

  70. Very rarely, when a list is managed manually, the subscription address
  71. is NOT xxx-request@yyy, but personal_user_code@yyy. In these cases, the
  72. address to send your subscription requests to is mentioned below.

  74. But now, the lists proper. If a list is known to have an xxx-request-
  75. address, the name is marked with an asterisk (*). To join these lists,
  76. send mail as explained above.
