------------------------------------------------------------------------
USER GROUPS
TOP (The OS-9 Project)
We have received 15 floppies with a second release of all of their
software with some added utilities and games. A more detailed evaluation
of this software will be made over the next couple of weeks but if you
want to make copies bring along the relevant number of floppies (and
some sandwiches and coffee!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
BULLETIN BOARD
OS9 CERN NEWSGROUP : If you read the news (rn or nn) on the PRIAM
Ultrix VAX you will see that a new local news group (OS9) has been
created - this is not broadcast outside the CERN site. Those wishing
to post articles to this group should use the program Pnews on the
Ultrix VAX.
ENHANCED PERFORMANCE NETWORK VIRTUAL DISCS : Lorne Levinson (OPAL)
has modified Tim Charity's Network Virtual disc package to do 4 sector
read-ahead (on each path). This allows bigger (and fewer) ethernet
packets to be sent with a resultant performance improvement.
Contact lorne@cernvm for more details.
EXABYTE RUNNING AT 246KB : Michael Levine has found the driver parameter
which needed modifying to get 246Kb/sec out of his exabyte driver.
He also has routines to allow filemarks to be written and the driver to
be queried about the physical block size.
Anyone with the same trouble/interest contact levinem@cernvax.
SPECIAL OFFER OF OS-9 SYSTEMS : Radstone (ex Plessey) are offering
(via their swiss agents Fabrimex) high performance OS-9 systems at
special CERN prices until the end of April. 33Mhz 68030, 68882 FPU,
4Mb DPR, VSB, SCSI, 2 serial ports, RTC, Intelligent Ethernet Controller,
170Mb SCSI Winchester, 1Mb 3.5" Floppy, 150Mb SCSI Streamer.
5 slot version : 22000sf
10 slot Version : 24500sf
Contact : B. Spizzi 01/386 86 64
----------------------------------------------------------------------
LICENCED SOFTWARE
68020 PROFESSIONAL : I have just purchases new licences - the price is
now 420sf (was 350sf).
INTERNET SUPPORT PACKAGE (ISP) : The default binary module ipconfig
is incorrect (and does not coincide with the ipconfig.a module). If
used it generates a very high broadcast rate - due to the gateway
flag being set to 1 (should be 0). A corrected version has been sent
to most interested parties but if you haven't had one then just assemble
ipconfig.a with everything set to 0's - or pick up:
/userb/kemp/os9/ipconfig.s1 from the PRIAM computer
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
RNDIR : F. Schmitt has come up with a new program (rndir) to scan the
directory tree and 'capitalise' the names of directories with
lower-case letters in their names.
see VXCERN::DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9.PUBLIC.OTHERS.F_SCHMITT]
FORTRAN TO C TRANSLATOR (f2c).
The AT&T/Carnegie-Mellon Fortran to C translator f2c and its run time
library have been installed on the PRIAM VAX under Ultrix. F2c may be
used to prepare programs for execution under Ultrix or under OS-9. For
OS-9 execution, C cross compilation and linkage is performed by the
cc68 component of Unibridge 1.1. Contact Julian Blake (blake@cernvax)
for further information.

ERROR REPORTS
Date : 1990-Feb-12
Problem : Unibridge Cross Compiler
Source : Per Scharff-Hansen/ Antonio Pastore
Description : The compiler aborts with :
"abnormal exit status = 136"
when trying to compile very small numbers (0.293874e-37)
Remedy : The compiler uses the Ultrix's floating point processor which
fails with such small numbers (ok with 0.29387e-33). So
take care when specifying such numbers.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Date : 1990-Feb-12
Problem : Documentation of _ss_sevent()
Source : Michael Levine
Description : In the description of _ss_sevent() [p.2-4 of Using OS9
Internet], the example should read:
...=_ev_create(0,-1,1,"myevent")...
NOT =_ev_create(0,-1,-1,"myevent")...
Remedy : Use as per correction. The description implies that the
function would work even though _ev_create incorrectly set up
since the drivers should execute _ev_setr() which does not
use the supplied signal increment - BUT IT SEEMS TO MATTER.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Date : 1990-Feb-19
Problem : Partial block read in sbviper
Source : Michael Levine
Description : There is an error in the read() entry of the sbviper driver.
If a request is made to read a number of bytes which is not
an integral multiple of the physical block size, the tag end
is ignored, but the value returned was not the actual # of
bytes read, rather the value requested.
Remedy : Fixed the read() routine.

INTRODUCTION FOR NEW PEOPLE ON THE MAILING LIST
Previous mail-shots can be found in the directory (on PRIAM) :
/userb/kemp/os9/mail-shots
with names such as info-0688 etc. They are also kept in the
Notes-file OS9 on VXCERN.
There are other files of interest in the os9 directory, see :
/userb/kemp/os9/README
Files on PRIAM can be accessed from VAX VMS systems using e.g.
priam::"/userb/kemp/os9/mail-shots/info-0688"
Much public domain software can be found in the various directories
in : VXCERN::DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9.PUBLIC]
[Note VMS files can be accessed from Priam using the commands dls, dcp,
dcat e.g. DCP VXCRNA::'DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9]ERRORS.TXT' X.TXT]
Binary files have been converted to S1 format and should be converted
back into binary using the OS-9 utility EXBIN.
You may also bring floppy(s) to the OS-9 Demonstration room (31 1-012)
and take copies.
Various documents about OS-9 are held in the OS-9 demonstration
room (31 1-012). The key to this room is with Douglas Kemp (31 1-011).
This room also has OS-9 demonstration systems with OS-9 software
products (from Microware and others) available for trial use. When
you want have a demo of a software item give me a ring :
