SHOCK (Unconsciousness, Fainting)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Signs to look for:
Victim feels weak and restless, and is unresponsive
The pulse is fast (over 100 beats/minute), but weak
Breathing is irregular, or deep
The face is pale, and the skin feels cold and damp to touch.
Forehead and palms are sweaty
The victim is experiencing chills, and possibly nausea.
Someone who is already in shock is silent, limp, motionless. The pulse
is weak, the breathing is inadequate and pupils are dilated.
Immediate Treatment:
1. Send for emergency medical help.
2. Check and maintain an open airway, restore breathing and circulation.
Take steps to treat the cause of the shock.
3. Have the victim lie flat, and keep calm and quiet
4. Cover to keep from losing body heat, but do not make the victim too
warm.
5. Raise the victim's feet slightly to help blood get to the heart and
brain, UNLESS there are head or leg injuries.
