- Cold Transmission and Antibacterial Soap

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: This year has been a terrible one for colds and flu in our family.
- With 4 youngsters, all attending school, there is scarcely a week that passes
- without someone coming down with the sniffles and coughs. We read that colds
- can be prevented by frequent hand washing, and wondered if it might be better
- to use a soap with antibiotics that are made to kill germs? Do you think this
- might help our family?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: You are right, of course, about the great need to wash hands
- frequently to prevent a cold from passing from one person to another in your
- family. The transmission of this disease is most common when the infected
- person touches his nose or mouth, then transmits the germs to a solid
- surface, like a bannister or table. The next person who touches this area,
- and then scratches his nose, is apt to become a victim of the same cold.
- That's why the recommendation to wash hands thoroughly and frequently is so
- effective in preventing the spread of germs within the family. But using
- antibacterial soaps may not be necessary.
- These new antiseptic soaps now coming on the market contain either
- triclosan or triclocarban as the active antibacterial agent. These chemicals
- are considered safe for this use, and do get rid of bacteria or viruses on
- your hands. But so does a good scrubbing with ordinary soap or detergent.
- It's a matter of degree. A mere smear of soap and trickle of water is not
- good enough, and even antibiotic soaps used in this fashion won't do the job.
- So you can help reduce the frequency of colds in your family by following
- simple rules of personal hygiene. Give every one their own towels and linens.
- Use paper products for both cups and towels if you really wish to avoid
- contacts, or be sure you have washed your utensils in very hot, soapy water,
- rinsed well. Supervise your childrens' washups, and make sure they take
- enough time and do a thorough job, capable of eradicating the germs. And
- increase the number of scrubs to about twice the number used in normal times.
- It is a fine way of producing the results you wish, while avoiding the skin
- irritation that can sometimes result from using the harsher antibacterial
- soaps.
