What is the Best Treatment for Diverticulitis?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: My husband has been diagnosed as suffering from colonic
diverticulitis. We have received conflicting advice on treating him. What do
you think is the best way to proceed?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: Colonic diverticulitis often results from a lack of fiber in the
diet, leading to a strain in the bowel wall that results in discomfort in
response to eating or emotional stress.
A high fiber diet that increases stool bulk can help to relieve the
discomfort. Bran cereals, whole wheat bread, a variety of fruits and
vegetables can be of significant help. On the other hand, roughage that
passes through the system without being thoroughly digested (nuts, corn,
popcorn, seeds, or celery for example) will only intensify your husband's
distress and should be avoided. Stool softeners or substances that will add
water to the stool and increase its bulk also help reduce discomfort.
Attacks of diverticulitis can be treated according to whether they are
mild or severe. Mild attacks are treated at home with bed rest and
antibiotics; a worsening condition requires immediate hospitalization.
Severe attacks, or attacks accompanied by fever, demand hospitalization
and observation. All stress is taken off the colon by removing the patient
from a solid food diet in favor of intravenous feeding. Pain relievers can be
administered until the attack has subsided, at which time the patient can
resume first a liquid diet, followed shortly by solid foods.
